This is one of the nicest vintage Buffets that I have seen, and certainly the nicest SDA alto that has come in in a year or so. It still plays well on a mix of older and newer pads and has just been put into good playing condition. It plays nicely with a big, warm French core to the tone. It is Selmer-like, but with a bigger sound overall and with lots of power. It is medium bright and open with a nice complex core and quite a bit of power. This horn will literally do it all. Original case also near mint condition.

The Buffet Prestige is a later version of the Buffet S-1 and is sometimes called the S-3. This horn is solid copper (not brass) throughout. The neck, body tube, bow, and bell are all solid copper, giving the horn a beautiful color that contrasts nicely with the brass keywork. As should be obvious if you look at details like the low C/Eb mechanism, this horn shares the same keywork as the slightly earlier S1, and it looks a lot like an S1 in other details as well. Sonically, I was very impressed by the tone that this horn puts out. I am generally a big fan of Buffet, and this horn is easily as good as the best S1’s I’ve played in the past. The tone is medium bright with a sizzle to it, with a basically round and focused core. It is a great horn for all kinds of music, but especially for a gigging saxophonist who needs a do-it-all pro horn that will stand out from the crowd.

Buffet R13 Golden Age Professional Clarinet

This beautiful R13 is getting a full restoration by Mike Hollis in Pittsburgh right now. Mike is a real clarinet geek and does restorations like this at the highest level. This instrument came along with a beautiful vintage Selmer tenor sax, and the pair of instruments both play really beautifully. The original owner must have had very good taste in selecting them. There are no repairs or cracks or issues. The photos are obviously before it gets restored. It should be ready in early July. If you want to reserve it, let me know. Even on original pads, it had a big, beautiful, round tone and sounded like a real winner. With a restoration, it will be fantastic.

Buffet S1 Alto Saxophone Amazing Condition Great Player Fresh Overhaul!

The Buffet S1 Alto saxophone is the best saxophone that Buffet ever produced. It has all of the big, operatic voice of a Super Dynaction, paired with some brilliant keywork improvements. Plus, it has that combination of high build quality and rarity that makes it appeal to me both as a player and as a lover of vintage saxophones. The low C/Eb design is just so pleasant to use. It’s light, fast, and ergonomic. No more hopping your pinky over rollers. Just rock it side to side! Why don’t modern saxes copy this? The left hand spatula keys have similarly smart rocking designs that make the adjacent keys stay accessible when you press any of the pinky keys down. The S1 has excellent intonation, beautiful engraving, and a pleasant, warm, medium tone between bright and dark. If you want a great professional alto that is in the neighborhood of a Selmer Mark VI, that is equally well built, but costs less, and has a bit wider, fatter sound, especially in the palm keys, then the S1 is the horn for you. There’s nothing else that does all of that stuff as well.

This beautiful S1 alto just got a complete overhaul by the great Bill Singer of NYC. Bill has been overhauling pro saxophones for the top NYC players (and all over) for years, and he has a stellar reputation. You can be sure that this horn plays its best, and that it will for many years to come with minimal maintenance required. That also adds a lot of value for you on the purchase. This is the version of S1 that has the serial number ending in A, which some say tunes better than the other versions, though I have never given this 440 vs 442 distinction much creedance. After all, who plays within 2 cents intonation on saxophone well enough to tell for sure anyway? Be that as it may, some people like the ‘serial ending in A for America’ story/version (never mind that America doesn’t start with an A in French but with an E), and this does indeed have serial ending in A.

Original case is gorgeous too. You’d have a hard time finding a nicer case.

The S-1 was Buffet’s most innovative and deluxe design for a saxophone. This horn is SN# 29xxx. It has its original lacquer with very little wear. It is rare to see an S1 in this kind of shape. There is a tenor in the museum section of this site that is similarly nice, but this is the nicest S1 alto that I have seen. It has the rare high F# key as well. This horn is in collectible condition, and it includes the original Buffet mouthpiece (I can supply an original ligature and cap from my hoard of mouthpiece stuff) as well as the original neckstrap.

The S-1 was Buffet’s most innovative and deluxe design for a saxophone. This horn is SN# 23xxx and comes from the 1975 or so. It has a medium bright, round tone with that “vintage” element in it – a kind of character or complexity to the core that makes it sound better and more interesting than some modern horns. The workmanship on this sax is particularly notable. It has a unique design on the low Eb and low C keys so that you can pivot your finger and switch without rollers. The low Bb key also shows some innovative (and comfortable) improvements. Overall, the key work is great, and the horn is easy to play fast on.

This is a very rare and impressively good-sounding soprano. Buffet’s S1 was the pinnacle of its saxophone manufacturing, and they appear to have made almost exclusively altos and tenors. This is one of only 3 S1 sopranos that I have seen for sale so far. In terms of keywork, this soprano looks very similar to a Super Dynaction soprano. The sound is far warmer and more complex than most other sopranos with modern keywork, and the intonation is very good. It is keyed up to high F#. I really like the tone of this horn – it is not nasal at all, but full and round with a medium dark, focused core.

Here is something that doesn’t come around everyday. It is a new old stock Buffet S1 soprano saxophone that is nearly perfect. I am told that it was used as a prop in a play, of all things, and then put away. It is all original including the beautiful original case. It plays VERY nicely, great tone and modern ergonomics. These sopranos are unique in their full-bodied, rich tone. The sound is far warmer and more complex than most other sopranos with modern keywork; it is not nasal at all, but full and round with a medium dark, focused core. Whether you are looking for a rich, expressive classical soprano tone or a pleasant, all-around soprano for multi-use, this would be a very good choice.

Buffet S1 Super Dynaction SDA Transitional Alto S1 Keywork 22035 Original, Recent Overhaul

So this is basically a Buffet S1 Alto based on the keywork, but it still has Super Dynaction engraved on the side. That’s why it is listed as transitional between the two models. You could also just think of it as an early Buffet S1. It has a fresh overhaul done before it came into the shop, using white kangaroo leather pads and brown plastic resonators. The pads are sealing just fine, and the horn feels good to play. As you can probably see, this horn had a crease removed from the bell flare. The work was done ok, but the flare still looks weird if you stare directly at it. I don’t see any other signs of past dent work or other problems. It’s priced quite attractively I think. The S1 is one of those desirable horns that have a vintage tone with nearly modern keywork. The S1 keywork is quite comfortable once you get used to it, and the way the pinky keys on both hands are designed is very smart. It’s quite fast and easy to get around on. I like the double hinged low Bb that makes it easy to rock from B or C# to low Bb. And the low C/Eb mechanism is brilliant. Someone should bring that back on a horn today.

This is a nice original lacquer Buffet S2 tenor saxophone. This horn plays a lot like a Buffet S1 Tenor, with a big, bold medium bright tone that can go either in a classical direction, or that can cut through a band. Intonation is very good. The LH pinky cluster has the very comfortable S1 design with tilting low Bb. The RH pinky keys are Selmer-style and also quite comfortable. This horn should be a good deal for someone looking for a nice pro horn for a good price.

This is a gorgeous original Buffet SA-18 alto. In my experience, these early horns are the best of the Buffet’s if you are looking for an SBA/early Mark VI kind of core sound. This is an early one, sometimes called an SA because it says SA-18 prominently on the bell (which is not a model but a street address of the company!). They are the darkest, and they have a lot of resonance and a rich French core sound. This alto has the easiest altissimo G of any sax I’ve played. It comes out effortlessly. This horn has special parabolic resonators that seem to give the sound an extra complexity and punch. These were reused in the overhaul. This horn does not fit any of the negative stereotypes you hear about Buffet (ie that they are stuffy, or that they fall apart at high volume). It is absolutely world-class and excellent in every way. If you dream of having a 5-digit Mark VI alto kind of tone, but you have less money to spend, this is hands down the best horn for you.

This is the only SA-18 soprano that I have seen come up for sale in the last several years. I’m sure there are others out there, but there can’t be many. Selmer sopranos are rare from the 40’s and 50’s, and Buffet made only 1/10 as many saxophones as Selmer, so this is probably 10x rarer than a 5 digit Mark VI soprano. The tone on these Dynaction/SA18 horns is really interesting. This is a more modern soprano design than any other horn that was made at the time. While Selmer didn’t really update its soprano design in the Mark VI era, Buffet did. So you get more modern keywork, good intonation, and a BIG SOUND. These horns play really big – also dark and complex with a compact, French core. Whoever gets this horn should be really happy with it!

This is a beautiful example of one of my favorite vintage tenors – the early Buffet SA-18, which has Selmer-like ergonomics, with a big, warm, smoky tone that is medium-spread. This is a good vintage tenor for the money. These horns are quite comparable with a Selmer Balanced Action or Super (Balanced) Action, for a lot less money. The Right hand keys are more spread than modern horns, so if you have small hands, you might want to look elsewhere, but if you have average size hands, you should be just fine.

This is a nice vintage Dynaction / SA-18 tenor with a fresh overhaul. It has dark nitrocellulose lacquer that is correct for the period. This is one of my favorite vintage horns for all-around combination of tone, intonation, and ergonomics. And it is unusual to see one in this kind of clean condition. If you are doing the “vintage Selmer sound on a budget” thing, or looking for a Buffet for its own qualities (which I heartily recommend) then this could be a good choice.

This is an extremely rare and clean Buffet SA-18 Tenor saxophone. This horn looks like it was relacquered by Buffet without buffing in 1958, and it has been sitting in the case since then. The pads have the correct parabolic domed, screw-in resonators that are original to this model (another reason that it was probably done at the factory.) This horn has a HUGE sound – it’s like a Selmer Balanced Action or a Conn New Wonder II in terms of huge, dark 30’s jazz power. These horns are also the rarest Buffet, with only around 2-3000 made total. I do not know why these horns don’t have more of a following. The intonation is great, the French BA-like core is complex and interesting, and the sound is overall bigger than a Balanced. These are great saxophones!

This is a dark, smoky late 1940’s model Buffet Tenor that is a relatively unknown gem of the vintage saxophone world. People who have these horns swear by them. They play like a good Selmer SBA. Of course, the comparison to Selmer is inevitable, but it goes the other way as well. I recently had a guy contact me whose friend wanted his SA18 tenor so badly that he offered to trade him an SBA tenor for it! This horn plays GREAT! It has just had all but a handful of the pads replaced by Matt Stohrer, and it feels really good under the fingers. The sound is really big. I played it against my Balanced Action this tenor, and the Buffet had a bigger sound. It has great intonation as well, and the keywork feels very good too! Buy this horn before I keep it!

This is a vintage Buffet SA-18 (sometimes called Dynaction, but the bell engraving and brace are a little bit different on the two iterations) made in 1954. It is a great player. This horn has a dark, rich tone that is slightly spread. It is smoky like an SBA, and has that similar french core, but it also has a special Buffet element that you don’t get in a Selmer, which is what makes people fall in love with these horns. (You can tell that I am a fan…)

This is a dark, smoky late 1940’s model Buffet Tenor that is a relatively unknown gem of the vintage saxophone world. It has super-rare original silver plate. People who have these horns swear by them. They play like a good Selmer BA/SBA. Of course, the comparison to Selmer is inevitable, but it goes the other way as well. I recently had a guy contact me whose friend wanted his SA-18 tenor so badly that he offered to trade him an SBA tenor for it! Tonally, think 40’s French. Rich, dark, smoky, spread, able to fill a room with ease, beautiful lows and subtones. So if you’re looking for something different and awesome, but not too different, this could be a great horn for you.

Buffet Senzo Alto Excellent Condition Solid Copper Fantastic!

                                      $ 3,650

When I got this new, high-end Buffet Senzo solid copper alto saxophone in recently, I had no idea what to expect. I had heard good things, but I also am not used to thinking of Buffet as a pro saxophone maker in recent times. In short, I was extremely impressed!

I’m a fan of the vintage Buffet saxophones from the 40’s through the 70’s, and I wondered whether this would be like a good S1 alto, for example. It is, and it isn’t. The S1 was fantastic, but the Senzo is a whole different level. It is extremely refined. Where some saxophones make you work to get an interesting tone, the Senzo just produces it without any fuss. This is no ‘clear, bright, generic’ tone like you get on most modern altos. It is centered, with a distinct core that your ear can easily follow. And the copper gives it its own special magic. This is hard to put into words. If you read around on this site, you’ll see that I never make claims about the effect of the outside finish on a saxophone’s tone. By contrast, when you change the base material, of, say, a Yanagisawa alto neck (or a whole horn) among brass, bronze, copper, solid silver (or even plastic!) the effect on the tone is immediate, dependable, and obvious. We don’t really have a vocabulary for these timbral differences, so I’ll do my best. Compared to brass (most saxophones) copper gives you a rich, vibrant, focused sort of projection, and tons of richness both at low and high registers. If brass is Elton John, copper is Freddie Mercury. Silver is noticeably darker, more focused, and has more overtones. Bronze is darker and richer than brass but not as punchy as copper and not nearly as focused and overtone-y as silver. Whew, that was not really satisfactory, but it’s a start towards explaining why it’s worth making a saxophone out of copper at all.

If you want to play jazz or just have an all around great alto, the Senzo is surprisingly great at that. It tunes well with a Meyer style piece, which cannot be said of the modern Selmer Series II or III altos by contrast. But it also really lends itself beautifully towards classical and ensemble alto playing. It tunes so well, and the timbre blends well, so it just gets the job done. I’m almost talking myself into keeping this horn, so I had better stop.

The only weirdness of the design is the way the high F# tone hole cuts through the neck tenon area, which means that you can’t move the neck right or left very much. The ergonomics feel like a Selmer or a Yamaha or whatever – modern, easy, and comfortable. This horn is in very good condition, and was just tuned up. The pads are in good shape and haven’t been played that much since it was bought new a few years ago. There was a little ding removed from near the C keyguard that is really hard to see. And there’s a little ‘acid bleed’ in a couple of places, which means just a bit of tarnish under the lacquer near a couple of post feet. All in all, it looks beautiful, and even better in person than in the photos. In case it’s not clear, that pink color is just the copper showing through clear lacquer, and the keys are regular brass. These altos are really exceptional, and I recommend them highly. Plus, it’s priced super low to sell quickly. Some lucky person will get a great deal. Buffet Senzo Professional Alto Solid Copper Near Mint 42001

This is a fantastic Buffet Senzo professional alto saxophone made of solid copper! The Senzo is one of the best modern alto saxophones for classical sax ever. It has a gorgeous tone that is different from everything else out there – big, wide, ‘operatic,’ medium between bright and dark. The solid Copper gives it an obvious buzz and complexity compared to the brass Senzo or the S-1 that came before it. Also, if you’ve been wanting a vintage Buffet Prestige alto in solid copper but couldn’t find one, or couldn’t find one in good shape, the Senzo is the horn for you! I’m sure it will be collectible in the future as well. There aren’t many of these out there, and this particular one is in excellent condition. It was one owner and well cared-for. The pads are in excellent condition and can’t have been used very much since new. This horn just got a thorough checkup too, which was basically a new horn setup plus a bit of leak checking and pad reseating, and it plays better than new now. The original case is nice also!

This is a nice vintage Buffet Super Dynaction, which was their top pro model alto saxophone from the 50’s through the 70’s. This is one of the harder-to-find early SDA’s with darker nitrocellulose lacquer. As you can see, this lacquer is fairly fragile and turns smoky and darker over time. It plays nicely with a big, warm French core to the tone. It is Selmer-like, but with a bigger sound overall and with lots of power. It is medium bright and open with a nice complex core and quite a bit of power. This horn will literally do it all. Original case comes with it, in good condition.

This is a barely played-since-new vintage Buffet Super Dynaction, which was their top pro model alto saxophone from the 50’s through the 70’s. The Super Dynaction deserves to be ranked alongside the Selmer Mark VI as one of the best all-around alto saxophones ever made, and early examples like this are hard to find in great shape, so this horn has a good potential to increase in value as appreciation for these excellent horns increases. It plays nicely with a big, warm French core to the tone. It is Selmer-like, but with a bigger sound overall and with lots of power, while remaining dark and lyrical. It is medium dark and open with a nice complex core. This horn will literally do it all.

This is hands down the nicest vintage Buffet that I have seen. It also plays really well. This horn has a great lyrical tone to it. It really sings. It is medium bright and open with a nice complex core and quite a bit of power. This horn will literally do it all. Plus it is in near-new condition with not so much as a scratch in the lacquer. Includes all the original case candy as well, so for less than the price of a new Yamaha, this is hard to beat. Original case also in mint condition.

                                            $ 1,250

Buffet Super Dynaction alto saxophone with original lacquer. This alto came from a collector who favored Buffet saxophones, and it is priced to sell, in good condition. It has had some dings removed, and the pads are old, but you’ll get an excellent pro alto for a bargain price if you get this and get it overhauled. It has the ‘sparkle’ lacquer that the earlier serial Buffet Super Dynaction saxophones have. The earlier ones like this also play darker, and look great too. The original case comes with it. They’re one of the few saxophones along with the Mark VI and the Couf Superba 1 that have a complex, interesting, vintage tone, but keywork that feels more or less modern under the fingers. Intonation is also typically quite good, as you might expect from Buffet Crampon Paris.

There’s virtually no wear even on the usual touch points. It plays nicely with a big, warm French core to the tone. It is Selmer-like, but with a bigger sound overall and a warm, projecting voice. If you are in the market for a GREAT-sounding alto, and you are looking for something in the sub $3k range, you really could not do better than to buy an alto like this that has been totally restored to top playing condition.

There’s virtually no wear even on the usual touch points, and before it was overhauled, it came with all original pads still playing great. It plays nicely with a big, warm French core to the tone. This is a player’s original lacquer Buffet SDA alto. It has a big, warm French core to the tone that is nice and lyrical. It is Selmer-like, but with a bigger sound overall. It easily fills a room and can even play commerical music loudly with the right mouthpiece. Of course, these horns are known for classical, and they do that well too. Here’s a gorgeous example of a Buffet Super Dynaction Alto Saxophone. It has a very early serial number: 5xxx, which puts it in the mid 1950’s. This horn has very little wear at all. It has what people often call Buffet sparkle lacquer, which is a beautiful crazing pattern in the lacquer that makes the horn glitter when you look closely at it. It has a rich, dark, round tone with a smoky quality to it. The SDA’s go from dark to medium bright and the general trend is towards a brighter sound on the later serial horns. I am one of the biggest fans of Buffet SDA’s that you will find. I think that they are the best tone per dollar of any vintage alto.

Excellent condition, original lacquer Buffet Super Dynaction alto with high F#. This horn has a recent repad and is in good playing condition with original case and mouthpiece. This is a beautiful horn, and it is very unusual to find one with high F#. This horn has a big, broad sound with a French core, medium bright, round, and good intonation. These horns are really nice and they have good potential to go up in value in coming years as well!

Buffet Super Dynaction Alto saxophone in original ‘sparkle’ lacquer. This horn is in on consignment, and has good pads, and plays well, with a big, operatic sort of voice. It’s centered like a Selmer from the 50’s, and medium dark, but wider and very open throated. Intonation is good. Keywork is Selmer-like and comfortable. Sometimes these get called a ‘poor man’s Mark VI’ but I’d prefer to think of them as a high-quality, professional mid-century French saxophone in their own right. But I guess, when you figure a new student Yamaha is over $2k, then this becomes a pretty good deal with good pads at this price for a pro vintage alto that is comparable to a Selmer. It has had some small dents removed in the bell area and back of the bow, but that’s just par for the course with a vintage sax, and the work was done well. It’s otherwise in quite good shape. It comes in the the delightful original Lifton case with blue interior. Someone should make a case like this again.

This horn also has good ergonomics and good intonation. It would work equally well for classical or jazz just depending on which mouthpiece you use. It ships in a nice aftermarket case that will protect the horn well.

These horns have a lot going for them: top build quality, good intonation, near-modern ergonomics and above all, a really big tone that is hard to beat. This horn is all original and has had minimal past repairs – just a couple of resoldered posts, which is nothing for a vintage bari. It is dent free and has also not had any dent work of note. The original neck looks excellent, as does the delicate upper bow area.

It is an early one from the late 1950’s with a serial number of 6xxx. These horns have a great feel to them and a really satisfying French core to the sound. The Super Dynaction is a really excellent saxophone, and for way less than a new Yamaha student horn, you can get a professional instrument from the prime time of saxophone manufacturing. With a little bit of pad work, this should be a great horn. It ships in the original case which is in good condition.

Great tone, like a vintage Selmer, but bigger and wider; excellent intonation; comfortable nearly-modern keywork; even scale; excellent build quality. And they are not too expensive. The early serial number ones like this are darker and richer sounding. This is the version to get if you can find one and want that darker tone.

We pay the best prices for great saxophones.

This is the most desirable earlier version with the more curvy neck that plays darker and fatter. It has original dark ‘sparkle’ lacquer, and the lacquer is almost entirely present, which is remarkable. There are also no dents, no dings, and no past repairs. The overhaul was done with Pisoni italian leather pads, and it feels great under the fingers. That’s about a $1500 value in the overhaul, which you don’t have to have done yourself now. The tone is medium dark, with a lyrical, ‘French’ core like a Selmer, but with a wider, more operatic voice than a Selmer. The Super Dynaction has a lot going for it – tone more similar to a vintage Selmer Mark VI than most any other vintage horn, keywork that feels nearly modern and fits comfortably under the fingers, Buffet build quality, and good intonation. And if you want the best, then you should get this one, because it’s the nicest early SDA I’ve had in many years, and it also has the nice overhaul already done. The trapezoidal case is cool too!

It is near mint, and it just got a full overhaul done by Matt Stohrer, who is one of the best techs in the country. These are very tough to find in this kind of condition, and they are especially hard to find in the earlier serial numbers. This horn is a SURPRISINGLY BIG player – one that I would be very happy keeping and playing myself as my main tenor. It is definitely the best playing SDA that I have played so far, with a bit darker and more focused tone than some later SDA’s, and with a really startling amount of resonance and life to the body tube. If you like modern ergonomics, you’re interested in a more vintage tone, but you don’t want to have something that’s totally different from modern, (and you don’t want to spend a ton) then the Buffet SDA is what you want to get!

It plays and feels a LOT like a much more expensive vintage Selmer Mark VI, for a small fraction of the price. It has modern-ish keywork, the quirks being no tilting low Bb, slightly more spread key layout, and inline tone holes. It’s comfortable to play and feels fast under the fingers. Third, it is original lacquer, and as an earlier serial SDA, it has the darker lacquer, and this one has a ‘sparkle’ to it, probably from the lacquer having microscopic facets in it, whether accidentally or by design. I’m told Buffet marketed these with ‘sparkle lacquer’ but I haven’t seen any literature along those lines yet myself. Fourth – the price is super low.

Cons: It needs a complete overhaul. I don’t think you’ll be limping along on old pads on this one. It needs to get repadded right off the bat. There are also several past repairs or issues – some posts pushed in, some posts resoldered, neck slightly pulled down and then corrected, mild bow dent. It’s been played a fair amount and also has a decent amount of play wear.

So to sum up – great vintage tenor, original lacquer, Selmer-ish tone, Selmer-ish keywork,l beautiful engraving, lots of potential, but it needs a complete overhaul and has been played a good bit as well. Great price though. One of the best horns for the money on the market, particularly if you are used to getting a horn overhauled. Only one available!

The SDA is one of the best vintage tenors made, in my experience, with a big, complex, dark tone with a French core; excellent intonation; and much more modern ergonomics and feel than most other vintage horns (if the latter is important to you). This SDA is original and very clean. This horn currently plays quite well (better than it deserves to) on its mostly original pads, which are still sealing. Compared to a vintage Selmer (everyone always asks this) the tone is fairly similar, but it has a bigger sound, a slightly different but still French core, which is delicate and centered, and similar ergonomics (but the RH is a bit more spread than a VI, for instance). Intonation is very good on these, as a rule. If you like modern ergonomics, you’re interested in a more vintage tone, but you don’t want to have something that’s totally different from modern, then the Buffet SDA is what you want to get!

It has no past repairs, save some minor dents removed from the back of the body, and it has the original neck not pulled down. When you buy this horn, you can be sure that you are getting a top-quality tenor in top playing condition. Buying a vintage Buffet is difficult to do if you aren’t already thoroughly knowledgeable about them, and even if you are, you’re not going to find a better player than this, with a better overhaul than this, for this kind of price.

These Super Dynactions are some of the best vintage tenors that you can find, bar none. They are less well-known than some other makes, mainly because Buffet has since become known for their clarinets, and many today have forgotten that they also made top-quality saxophones for many years. The Buffet tone is darker, bigger, and more interesting than virtually any modern horn. Compared to a vintage Selmer (everyone always asks this) the tone is fairly similar, but it has a bigger sound, a slightly different but still French core (impossible to describe) and similar ergonomics (but the RH is a bit more spread than a VI, for instance). Intonation is very good on these, as a rule. Original mouthpiece, ligature, cap, lyre, cork grease, warranty cards and case are included. The horn is mint except for a few random spots in the lacquer on the back of the body. No dents, no dings, no past repairs, original neck is in great condition and not pulled down etc. Just a super-clean, original Buffet SDA. Compared to a vintage Selmer (everyone always asks this) the tone is fairly similar, but it has a bigger sound, a slightly different but still French core (impossible to describe) and similar ergonomics (but the RH is a bit more spread than a VI, for instance, but only by a hair). The SDA is one of the best vintage tenors made, in my experience, with a big, complex, dark tone with a French core; excellent intonation; and much more modern ergonomics and feel than most other vintage horns (if the latter is important to you). This SDA is both early (1962) and structurally clean.Compared to a vintage Selmer (everyone always asks this) the tone is fairly similar, but it has a bigger sound, a slightly different but still French core (impossible to describe) and similar ergonomics (but the RH is a bit more spread than a VI, for instance, but only by a hair). Intonation is very good on these, as a rule. If you like modern ergonomics, you’re interested in a more vintage tone, but you don’t want to have something that’s totally different from modern, (and you don’t want to spend a ton) then the Buffet SDA is what you want to get!

It has been modified so that it has a more modern octave mechanism. The lacquer is gorgeous and probably from the 30’s or 40’s. Pads are also from that era. The case is in great shape, and the horn is in excellent physical condition as well. Offers are welcome on this piece of saxophone history.
