Conn 6M VIII Alto Saxophone Pre-war 300088 Original Lacquer Excellent Condition

BEAUTIFUL example of an original lacquer ‘Pre-war’ Conn 6M VIII Alto saxophone in extremely fine original condition with original pads. It’s about as clean an example as you are ever likely to find. It had one dent removed from the body tube (nearly invisible now), and that’s it for past repairs or damage over its entire first 80 years of existence.

These altos remain an absolute bargain. They’re among the best playing alto saxophones ever made, with a bigger, wider, more powerful tone than almost anything out there. And yet the keywork is very fast and comfortable, and the intonation is excellent. It’s the perfect lead alto horn. It’s also made in USA at the height of US manufacturing, and has a build quality that has hardly been matched since. This is the desirable version with the VIII stamped neck, which tends to sell for more than the later versions without the stamp. They’re all great, so if you’re on a budget, check out the beautiful 320k post war example that is also for sale. This is original pads, so plan to get it repadded.

Conn 6M VIII Alto Saxophone Pre-War Original Lacquer Great Player! 295729

Pro-owned top notch Conn 6M VIII alto with original lacquer. This 6M stands out as a perfect lead alto. Response is really quick, the keywork is fast and comfortable, the intonation is great, and the tone really carries over a section. It plays really well on the existing pads. It’s not a fresh overhaul, but it’s a good one, and it has a lot of playing time left. For what you get, this is hard to beat for an all-purpose alto that sounds great. It’s much wider, richer, and warmer than any modern alto on the market, and in an alternate universe, its keywork style would have become what all saxophones have. It’s fast and efficient once you get used to it.

Comes with the ProTec contoured case in the photos.

Conn 6M VIII Alto Saxophone Pre-War Original Lacquer Very Good Condition Plays Well 294775

This pre-war (from the American perspective, meaning prior to the government order than restricted the manufacture of musical instruments along with anything else made out of brass) Conn 6M was built in 1941, and is the desirable “VIII” version, with the VIII stamp on both the body and neck.

It is in very good physical condition with original lacquer, no dents, and no major or minor past repairs or resolders, with the exception of a repaired dent on the bowguard, which is visible in the photos.  It has what appears to be a recent repad, or perhaps an old repad that wasn’t played much after it was done, and Conn Res-o-pads were used. It plays well with a big voice, and although to my professionally-obligated-to-be-picky tastes it is not quite as astoundingly slick under the fingers at these feel when they have been overhauled as the best repairers can do, it is definitely playable as-is and will beat the pants off of most any challenger, especially modern imports that cost a lot more and give you a lot less than this fine example of vintage American saxophone craftsmanship.

Oddly, the lacquer on the neck is more worn than the rest of the horn- although physically the neck is in immaculate condition with no dents or past pulldowns.  In the past when I have seen this the culprit is usually a homemade neck bag that was lacquer-unfriendly, or perhaps the owner had a habit during rests to hold the horn with the neck in his hand.  Given the lack of wear elsewhere on the horn, I’d guess a neck bag was the culprit here, although I can’t be certain. But again, though the lacquer itself is mostly gone from the neck (and the neck alone), the neck tube is flawless and there are no signs of past repairs of any kind.

The microtuner is free and functional, and all of the original rollers and present and moving freely.  The engraving is crisp and clear with no lacquer loss, and the pearls seems largely unworn. The keywork is tight and the body is straight.  This is a very clean example of the most desirable vintage of the most desirable variant of the Conn 6M, and it can be yours for less than a new Yamaha YAS-26.

Conn 6M VIII Original Silver Plate Pre-War Rare Version 285404 Excellent Condition

Incredible Pre-war Conn 6M VIII in silver plate. You rarely see silver plated instruments before WWII stopped conn production in mid 1942. This one from 1938-39 is in gorgeous condition with original silver plate nearly 100%. The pads are older. Plan on a repad. The neck is great condition also with no damage. No past repairs. Interestingly, this appears to have been special ordered with a second strap hook, which makes the horn balance like a modern alto. I have never seen this before on a Conn, but I’m certain that this is factory original, as the plating matches and there is no sign of aftermarket soldering at all. Pretty cool!

Conn 8M C Melody Unbelievable Condition Fresh Overhaul Original Silver Naked Lady 274636

This is a wonderful and extremely rare example of a very late serial Conn 8M C Melody saxophone with the ‘Artist’ / ‘Naked Lady’ engraving pattern on the bell. It’s gorgeous original silver plate finish with gold wash in the bell. It just got a full top-shelf overhaul with Italian leather Pisoni pads and nice sent of screw in reusable flat metal (brass) resonators. If you want a really good C melody for less money, look for a late New Wonder II Conn – around 200k serial if you can find one. This particular late serial version is ultra-rare — I’ve only seen 7 of them ever. This is the latest one I’ve ever sold. The cool thing about the later Conn C melody saxophones is that the tone opens up and gets really big and projecting like a tenor. If you use a GS RESO C Melody mouthpiece on this horn, you can get a tone that you just can’t get on any other type of saxophone. It’s in C but it’s fat and full and open like a tenor, but it concert pitch. Nothing else sounds like this. I had Tyler do a demo with one of my Conn C melodys and the GS RESO, so that you can get a basic idea of what it can sound like. Tyler had never played a C melody before, so I think he did pretty well for his first time!

This is a players Conn tenor – recently overhauled really well, and pads are still fresh. Original satin silver plate with gold wash in the bell. It’s been played a lot, because it plays well!  The fresh overhaul feels great under the fingers. This is a horn that needs nothing and plays its best right out of the case. It has flat metal reso-techs and Pisoni leather pads, strap hook moved for balance, and the desirable art deco engraving.

The 238-247k serial range is among the most prized among tenor players who love Conns. These tenors have a huge sound like the New Wonder II, but some key work and tuning improvements looking toward the 10M. Well, this is one of those horns that doesn’t come around very often. Of C melody’s it’s one of the best ever made, and it very nearly maxes out every possible category in which you could rate it. In terms of rarity, this is just about the end of the line for the Conn C Melody. I have a 243xxx in my personal collection, and they may have made a very small number of later special ordered C Melodies, but not many. Tonally this horn has such a big, warm, rich sound. If you have only read about C Melodies on the internet, then forget what you have read before and think of a completely different saxophone – not an alto, bigger, louder, warmer – but not a tenor – more centered, almost cello-like in the richness and vocal quality of the sound. This is a turn key purchase for a beautiful, rare, and great-playing vintage saxophone. Get it now – there’s only one available!

Conn Chu Berry New Wonder 1 Tenor Saxophone Burnished Gold Plate Portrait 1924

Just freshly overhauled! New photos posted late June 2020!

Conns from the 1920’s like this have an enthusiastic following these days. I’m told that it’s now more common to see a tenor player in NYC playing a Conn than a Selmer, which is hard to believe if true. I have definitely noticed a large and growing amount of interest and enthusiasm for Conns like this over the last 5 years at least.

The way I think about vintage Conn tenors is this. They are all built quite well, and they are all good players once you get them all fixed up and overhauled. So if you have the choice, and budget allows, you might as well buy the nicest one you can to fix up. This is for a couple of reasons. First, resale value will always be better the more beautiful the horn is, and the rarer the finish. Second, you get to experience the satisfaction, even joy, of owning such a beautiful piece of craftsmanship from the world’s greatest musical instrument factory of the 20’s and 30’s, which is undoubtedly Conn. Conn set the standard for musical instrument manufacturing during that time. Its designs were copied by all the other makers, from France to Germany, Italy, and even eventually Japan. They are still being copied today in fact!

If your goal is to get the best, most beautiful, rarest Conn that you can, it would be hard to do better than this beautiful burnished gold Conn New Wonder 1 ‘Chu Berry’ tenor saxophone from 1924. The finish is a bit tarnished at present, because I haven’t had time to get it disassembled, cleaned, and polished yet, but there’s a lot of original gold plate there, and not a whole lot of finish wear. The burnished (bright) gold Conns like this are incredibly rare. Much rarer than the satin gold examples, which are themselves very rare. The engraving is striking. Each burnished gold Conn had the option for a custom portrait. I wonder whose sweetheart this is! Some stylish flapper 20’s lady in any case. This would almost definitely have been pro-owned by the tenor player from a big band. I got the horn from Ohio, if there’s anyone who can connect the dots at all. I have never seen any other Conn tenor with engraving like this, so it has some historical value as well, to me at least.

This tenor comes in pretty good playing condition. It was tuned up before I got it, and I’ll probably spend some more money on pad work before I sell it. It also includes a nice Hiscox case with my favorite, the red interior, which is no longer offered. Much better than the blue for a gold saxophone.

Just for fun, here’s Lester Young on his New Wonder 1 tenor just like this one, also gold plated. The wide, lush, spread, medium dark tone is just gorgeous.

Conn Chu Berry NW1 Baritone Saxophone Gold Plate Stunning Original Gold Added High E-F 104836

Just fully overhauled! This saxophone restoration was a labor of love, and included not only a complete mechanical overhaul, but also fabricating keywork to fit the added high E and F that this saxophone has. It also got a re-shaped high F key touch and G# key touch, as well as a custom made front F mechanism. All of the custom keywork was also gold plated to match the horn, and it all looks great! The overhaul was the standard high-end job, including a thorough cleaning, gentle hand polish, new oil, all new pads, felts, cork, thorough setup, a beautiful set of custom made TenorMadness slightly domed brass reusable resonators, medium sized, and a careful neck fit, so the neck seals just right in the receiver (which is important on any saxophone, but isn’t always done.). So all that work was definitely a big job, and took several months, but really this horn deserved it. It’s one of the most beautiful saxophones of any kind that I have seen, and it really needed to be put into top condition.

The result is glorious! It feels great under the fingers – dry and snappy like a new sax. The low register response is effortless. Upper register pops out. The intonation is pretty good, but not perfect. With my large chamber mouthpieces, it tunes quite well at low, middle and high Bb, with the usual quirks here and there – middle D is sharp, octave A is sharp etc. You can adjust your throat and get used to it just fine. And the full, warm, spread, lush tone that you get makes it totally worth it! There’s nothing like a Conn baritone for sound. That’s why pros still covet these instruments so highly, so many years later.

It would be hard to find a nicer Conn baritone than this. The thick burnished gold that Conn used is a different color than I experience in any other part of daily life. It glows! And the engraving on this baritone is the most delicate and tasteful that I have seen. This is as good as it gets for Conn engraving quality. Some engraving is just decoration, but this takes it to the level of an actual art form.

There’s certainly only one available. The price including the thorough, top-shelf restoration is very reasonable. Conn baritones are in short supply, and this one is priced in the mid range despite being exceptionally nice. If you want to get it with a new BAM Hightech case for safe shipping/gigging, I’m happy to give you one at a big discount. Just message me.

And for fun, here’s Gerry Mulligan on his ’27 Conn baritone also gold like this one!

This is among the nicest 30M’s that I have seen. It has its original pads from 80 years ago, and is in nearly new condition! There is nothing like a Conn 30M for beauty, build quality, and a big, powerful Jazz Era tone. And despite what you may think, the keywork on a 10M/30M is actually very fast when properly setup. In my opinion, if you can get a nice vintage Conn to play, you should.

Conn Connstellation Alto Saxophone 28M Excellent Condition Original Lacquer 338006

The Conn 28M will always have a special place in my heart.  It represents the last time one of the great American saxophone manufacturing companies tried something wholly new, and although the horn never really found a market and not many were made, they are fantastic instruments that besides being unique and historically interesting, play *really* well.

These saxophones were redesigned, utilizing many ideas from Allen Loomis (Conn’s resident saxophone visionary) and Hugh Loney, with input from Santy Runyon, with the aim of creating a saxophone that had extremely slick keywork and a very balanced scale.  The keywork, although familiar under the fingers with regard to placement and layout, is mechanically quite different from any other saxophone and has been built from the ground up with the goal of reducing mechanical friction. There are no pivot screws anywhere on this saxophone, instead the long rods have a very long hinge rod with the middle machined down so only the ends touch.   The G# has a very unique torsion mechanism to provide a G# feel that is smooth throughout the range. The side keys are designed so that the angle and distance of travel is the same for each key. There are adjustment screws on the upper and lower stacks as well as the left hand pinky table. The bell keys are on the left side, and the pants guard/bell keyguard is a large acrylic plate that was designed with the idea in mind of allowing the horn to vent properly regardless of playing position or clothing choice.  The octave mechanism has three pips (octave vents), one on the neck and two on the body, which has the end result of a very clear middle D and no hiss on the A or G#, as well as excellent intonation. The keywork in general is very light, and the pearls are larger than usual for Conn and a little flatter. The overall feeling is of a very light horn, extremely slick, easy to play, excellent intonation, and very even throughout.

This Connstellation alto has its original plastic pants guard in great shape. The guard is about as good condition as they come, fully present with only a few small cracks radiating from around the screw holes, which is common.  However none of the cracks are large and it is not broken in two or missing any pieces, which is not common! And believe it or not, I have experience shipping these so you can rest easy knowing I will remove it for shipping, wrap it separately, and it will arrive to you in good condition.

This instrument plays quite well on older pads, with a strong, moderately bright, cheerful voice.  The clarity of the tone is notable, and it is a lot of fun to play with a unique look and feel and timbre that would lend itself easily to classical, big band, or small group jazz.  The lacquer is original and nearly flawless, with no evidence of past repairs or dents or resolders of any kind. It is also a unique and interesting piece of saxophone history, in exceptional condition, and whoever owns this instrument next will have a lot of fun being its steward for the next generation.

Conn Connstellation Alto Saxophone 28M Very Good Condition Original Lacquer 335771

You could be forgiven for thinking that because there are two original lacquer, very good condition Conn 28M “Connstellation” saxophones on my website at the moment that these are somewhat common, but I assure you that is not the case!   I will copy and paste the general statements about the 28M from the other description, with the unique description of this particular instrument’s physical and playing condition at the bottom.

The Conn 28M will always have a special place in my heart.  It represents the last time one of the great American saxophone manufacturing companies tried something wholly new, and although the horn never really found a market and not many were made, they are fantastic instruments that besides being unique and historically interesting, play *really* well.

The overall feeling is of a very light horn, extremely slick, easy to play, excellent intonation, and very even throughout.

The one downfall of this design is the pantsguard, which is fairly brittle and often broken.  Although nowadays there are excellent replacements available, this one has its original guard in decent condition.  There is one repaired crack (visible in the photos) and the common small cracks radiating from some of the screw holes.  I would anticipate, absent any further damage, that this keyguard will last and should not present any problems- although I will furnish you with contact information for obtaining a well made (and somewhat more durable) replacement should you ever need it.  And believe it or not, I have experience shipping these so you can rest easy knowing I will remove it for shipping, wrap it separately, and it will arrive to you in good condition.

This instrument plays quite decently on what appears to be an older repad with plastic domed resonators, with a strong, moderately bright, cheerful voice.  The clarity of the tone is notable, and it is a lot of fun to play with a unique look and feel and timbre that would lend itself easily to classical, big band, or small group jazz.  The lacquer is original and in good condition with some playing wear and a few stand scratches near the low C#, with no evidence of past repairs or dents or resolders of any kind. It is also a unique and interesting piece of saxophone history, in very good condition, and whoever owns this instrument next will have a lot of fun being its steward for the next generation.

Are you looking for a soprano tone that sounds more like an alto, or even a tenor in its warmth and fatness? That would be the #1 reason to look at a gorgeous old Conn like this. These horns are beasts! Prices vary according to rarity of finish and serial number, but amazingly, NOT according to playability. And that makes this one a great deal. It has everything going for it:
Keyed to high F; Basically mint condition cosmetically and mechanically, which is unheard-of in the normal, everyday world of buying vintage saxophones; Super resonant New Wonder 1 bore which has a HUGE tone not seen in modern sopranos. Durable nickel plate looks like chrome when polished, and takes decades to tarnish.

Conn Curved Soprano NWII ‘Chu Berry’ Excellent Original Silver Plate 168010

This is a beautiful example of a Conn New Wonder II Curved Soprano saxophone. The two best Conn curved sopranos I have played were both also 168k, for whatever reason. I’m sure there are lots of great ones, but that seems to be a sweet spot.
The condition is very good – original silver plate and gold wash in the bell are both almost all present. There’s no significant damage, nor are there serious past repairs. The only repairs I see are resoldered low Eb and C key guards. These often pop off on their own, or from the smallest provocation on the curved sopranos. I don’t see any evidence of dent work around either key guard, so I do not think there was any sort of damage there. The bell flare, bell, bow, and body tube are all in very good shape. There’s a tiny U shaped piece of metal is missing from the neck, that is usually called the octave guide. It doesn’t have much of a job to do on soprano, as the octave key is so short and doesn’t need to be guided, but there’s a spot under the octave key where it used to be. I could very likely get one made and silver plated to match, though that would take a while. There’s also a foot on the Eb key that rests against a black rubber bumper that makes the Eb action feel snappy. I think that’s an addition, though Conn was always experimenting. Could be easily removed if you want, but it lets Eb open farther than it would using a felt bumper. The rolled tone holes look very good. No damage or wear or filing on this horn.
The pads are a mix of older and newer. I was just about to give this one to Matt Stohrer for a thorough checkup, as it does feel leaky in places (particularly middle D right now). That should not be too hard to fix. Just normal stuff with old saxophones. But it does not have a fresh overhaul, and the pads have rivets instead of resonators, old school.
Sort of depends on your goals for the horn what would be the wisest course of action pad wise. I could discount it if I’m not spending money on it with Matt, and if you wanted to just get it overhauled completely by your own tech. Then everything would be fresh and new all at once.
The case is in quite good condition for its age, and aside from a ‘dryer sheet’ sort of smell (which a few days of direct sunlight should mostly remove), it is one of the nicer ones I have seen.
Intonation on these horns is flexible but very good all things considered. Modern sopranos have a bore design that makes the intonation very tightly controlled, but at the expense of texture and richness of tone. Conn’s idea was to use a bore to make the horn sound wide, warm, lush, and loud, and leave it to the player to keep the intonation under control. I personally think Conn made the right decision here. While the Yamaha EX is a great soprano, for example, it sounds nothing like as warm and pleasant as a Conn like this. The guy who helped me in the shop here for many years picked out a 168k serial Conn curved as his gigging soprano out of all the horns that came through over the years. It’s that good. He plays in swing bands and just sounds super great. There are no real intonation problems, and with a medium to large chamber mouthpiece, it should slot in quite easily with a normal not-too-tight embouchure. You just have to use your ear to tell if you’re bending notes around.
Keywork feels a lot like other Conns, only closer together. The one exception is the in line palm keys, which are a bit of a struggle. If you plan to do a lot of palm key gymnastics, then I would not get this horn, because they are hard to move around on if you need to go very quickly. Besides that, yeah, it’s a solid keywork design, and it feels good. For ballads and normal sorts of high register playing, the palm keys are fine.
All in all, it’s a beautiful example of a Conn curved, from right around the best serial range for these, with minimal past repairs, a good case, a mix of pads, and a great tone.

Conn Curved Soprano Silver with Gold Keys to High F

This is a beautiful early Conn curved soprano, SN#31368. It has a very big, warm tone and can very easily fill a room, and it is keyed to high F. It is a combination of beauty, rarity, and tone that should make someone really happy! The silver with gold keys finish is rare and one of the most beautiful finishes that Conn offered. The palm keys on this soprano are actually more comfortable than those on other vintage curved sopranos. This horn was overhauled a few years ago by an excellent saxophone repairman and player and plays very well. It includes a nice case to protect the horn. This horn has the removable neck, so it fits in a very small space if you need it to.

This is a rare old Conn curved soprano keyed to high F! It also has the rare finish of silver plate with gold plate accents, and it looks great. It has had a recent repad and plays very well. It includes a new, modern case too. This horn has a big, warm voice and plays quite well. I would not recommend this for a beginner, because you need to be able to voice notes in your throat and have a good sense of pitch in order to keep everything under control. The pitch on these horns is not bad, but it is very flexible and sensitive to small changes on the player’s side.

This is about the 150th Conn 6M made. (The first is #250243, and they made other voices in between that one and 250425.) If you know this site, you’ll know that I especially like these early 6Ms. They play wider and wilder than the also-great-later 6M’s, but they still have the super slick keywork that makes 6M’s great. So it’s kind of a sweet spot if you want great keywork and a big sound. This one needs an overhaul, and it has a few dings, but it’s going to be a superb alto with a little care put into it. Or talk to me about getting it including a fresh overhaul, which I can have done to my picky standards in a couple of weeks’ time.

In the heyday of saxophone manufacturing in the USA, CG Conn planned to offer a full family of saxophones in Bb and Eb (as we have today) and also in C and F. This is one of the rare F alto saxophones made by Conn in those days. It is smaller than an alto, and larger than a curved soprano. It is its own full design– carefully thought-out and not simply an ad hoc creation out of spare parts. It looks like a New Wonder II, but it already features same side bell keys like the later Artist series horns like the 6M’s.

It is its own full design– carefully thought-out and not simply an ad hoc creation out of spare parts. Cosmetically, this horn has no dents or dings. From what I can tell, it is a strong player. These horns have a sound that is really difficult to describe – it’s like if you managed to distill down the essence of a Conn tenor and squeeze it into a horn that sounds more like a curved soprano. This is a must-have for any serious saxophone collector, and it is also a horn that deserves to be recorded and played more widely. And it’s in F, for easy transposing!

I have only seen a handful of these ever, and they all sold for high prices. They were all excellent players as well. This one has a huge voice like I always expect on a Conn of this serial. It has older pads and will need an overhaul soon. If you want that rarity factor with the original gold plate, that’s the reason to get this one. The lacquered or silver ones from the same period also play wonderfully, so you can definitely get the same kind of tone for less money. But if you want to be in the exclusive club of folks who own a gold art deco Conn transitional tenor, then this is your ticket.

This is a Conn New Wonder Series II tenor saxophone in burnished gold plate with elaborate engraving of a tall ship on the bell.  This finish combination- burnished gold body and keys with elaborate engraving- is sometimes called a Conn “Portrait” saxophone, as they often featured the portrait of a woman, but Conn would have called this their “Artist’s Special” finish.  These saxophones, along with the Conn “Virtuoso Deluxe” finish, represent- to me- the highest level of artistry seen in a truly playable modern saxophone. For a period of time, the maturing craft of saxophone making aligned with a market strong enough to allow production of saxophones that to this day have no equal.

This particular horn features a beautiful engraving pattern of a ship I have not personally seen before, and while showing signs of use throughout the years (Conns are often heavily used, though well cared for, as they were the choice of many of the professional big band musicians from the 1920s-1940s) is in solid physical condition with no evidence of any major past damage or resoldering.  It currently plays decently on old pads, but you would want an overhaul for this horn to play at its full potential. A potential which, as anyone who has played a Conn with pads that seal can tell you, is an absolutely monstrous sound, rich and powerful.

So if you know about vintage Conns, most of them are altos. Of the tenors, most of those are unlacquered, lacquered, or silver plate. Only a few are gold plate. Of the gold plated ones, most are satin gold with normal engraving, and only a few have the thick burnished gold plate finish. And those special horns took way more time to manufacture, as the gold has to be hand-burnished onto the horn. They also got deluxe hand engraving with special portraits done by Conn’s best engravers.

So this is one of those. It has all the boxes checked. Original burnished gold, portrait engraved, very good condition. On top of that, it has a recent, high-quality overhaul done with resotech flat metal resonators. The tone is big, wide, powerful, medium dark. The horn vibrates under your fingers when you play. There’s not much to speak of by way of past repairs. The neck octave key has been resoldered, as have a few key cage legs. A few small dings were removed from the bell and back of the bow. These are all minor things and all corrected. This horn is really nice. Even slightly nicer in person than in the photos.

Well, well, well. Look what we have here! If you are deep into vintage saxophones, then you will know that this is a special one. This is a very rare ‘naked lady’ engraved Conn curved soprano that dates to around 1931, and may have actually sold quite a bit later than that. I have only seen a few later Conn curved sopranos out there, and they all sport a few distinctive intonation improvements and neck angle changes that help you to play the horn with the greatest ease. This horn has virtually all of its original silver plate intact, and it has a recent repad done in Chicago, followed by an extensive Aaron Barnard setup/adjustment to get it into top playing condition.

Conn New Wonder 1 Alto Burnished Gold Stunning Portrait Engraved Old Pads 139214

Gorgeous original gold plated Conn New Wonder 1 alto with portrait and everything. This alto is made of brass, but it has as thick layer of gold plate over a layer of silver plate over the brass. Conn gave lots of special attention and time to these portrait engraved ‘burnished’ gold examples, and this is a beautiful one that made it through its first 100 years to still be in excellent condition today. These are extremely fun altos to play, with a big, wide, velvety, room-filling tone that is full of warmth and sweetness. If you want an alto that is really lyrical and pleasant to listen to, the New Wonder 1 and 2 are probably at the top of the list. What you sacrifice is modern keywork – this has 1920’s ergonomics, so don’t expect to burn it up on this. The intonation is good but flexible. You can bend notes around, so if you’re a ‘biter’ with way too tight of an embouchure, you will have more trouble than if you play with a relaxed or fairly even embouchure. This one has old pads and needs a repad, but hey- it’s gorgeous, in good condition, and burnished gold with extra engraving, so you’re getting a great deal on a work of art that is also very usable as a modern instrument today.

Conn New Wonder 1 Alto Original Burnished Gold Plate Portrait 84738

There are a ton of beautiful altos on the site, but this one stands out from the crowd. It is the heaviest gold plate finish that Conn offered – basically sheets of thick (actual) gold rubbed onto the brass to give you a finish that will last for centuries with minimal maintenance required. Both gold and skilled labor were cheap back in 1920’s America and Conn could afford to invest an extra couple of days’ labor in applying all this gold by hand-burnishing, and engraving such an elaborate scene on the saxophone, and still make a profit. These days, it would be literally impossible to reproduce saxophones like this and market them. They would cost far too much. Just a thin layer of modern gold plate costs like $3500 to do.

So this horn is something very special. Not just as a piece of art, or a piece of exceptional craftsmanship, but as a musical instrument as well. William Morris, the influential artist, famously encouraged us to “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, and believe to be beautiful.” This alto sax just wails as a player, and definitely fits both requirements nearly as well as a saxophone could. The engraving features (probably) Apollo, god of music, with his harp, and an extremely ornate C.G. Conn logo and decoration.

This alto has very good pads, and plays extremely easily on the current, high-quality overhaul. It feels nice and snappy under the fingers, and the pad work is very good, flat and ‘dry’ feeling, which is a sign of high-quality work with rolled tone holes. The tone is pure 1920’s jazz power: wide, smooth, warm, and dark, but very projecting. This horn vibrates under your fingers even at moderate volumes, and is super fun and responsive to play. Low register is easy. Intonation is good, though you can easily bend notes around also. The keywork is vintage, so it will feel weird if you’re coming from a Yamaha, at least at first. But the tone and beauty you get in exchange makes it well worth it.

Conn New Wonder 1 C Melody Saxophone Plays Well! 79645

This is a nice, clean original bare brass Conn New Wonder 1 C melody saxophone. It has actually been repadded at some point, and the current pads are still sealing well. They’re not new, but they do play just fine. This is a fun horn to play, with a big, warm, vintage 1920’s velvety sort of tone. Stand at the piano with your family member, and play along with the music! You don’t have to transpose. That’s actually very nice. I love my personal C melody sax, which is also a Conn.

Bare brass is nice because you really can’t hurt it. The horn will pretty much always look the same, unless you want to disassemble and polish it up. You could even get it lacquered, and it would look new, if you fall in love with this and want to restore it to a brilliant shine at some point in the future.

If you want a budget C melody made by Conn that sounds big and warm and plays nicely, and you don’t want to spend a lot of money at all, this would be your horn. It’s pretty hard to beat for the price! Conn made the best C melody saxophones.

Note: My favorite mouthpiece for C melody is the Morgan hard rubber in a 5 or 6 tip. It sounds full and open like a tenor sax.

Conn New Wonder 1 C soprano 136795 Excellent Condition Original Silver Plate RARE

Price just reduced! This is an excellent deal on a beautiful Conn C soprano in original silver plate. This C soprano has good pads and plays well on them! You can’t find This is on consignment from a serious Conn collector who has excellent taste in saxophones! It almost looks new, the original silver plate is in such good shape. There are at least a few nice vintage Bb Conn sopranos out there, but a C soprano is at least 5x as rare. You don’t see these available often at all. And this one is about as nice as they come! You couldn’t buy a C soprano and get it overhauled for this price. Let alone with a working mouthpiece, which this one has. (It’s a stubby vintage mouthpiece, but the markings are worn off – not sure of the make.) C sopranos are hard to play in tune (as are Bb sopranos), but who cares? They’re tons of fun! And this sounds way richer and darker than any modern Bb soprano because it’s a Conn.  It currently has no case, but we can work something out if you talk to me about options.

Only one available! Time to get a cool horn that’s fun to play, and stop transposing.

This soprano has a great, warm tone. Even moreso than the beauty of the gold plate, and the excellent Conn build quality (and the low price), the tone is the reason to buy it. Nothing made today sounds remotely as full and big as a vintage Conn. The modern soprano tonal concept is focused and reedy, even oboe-like, but the 20’s American-made sopranos have a completely different sound – full-throated, dark, and lush. Much more pleasant to listen to.

This Conn New Wonder I tenor has a huge, warm spread tone and tons of resonance all up and down the body tube. Lester Young played this model, SN 144,444 so you can go listen to Prez and get an idea of what this horn can do (with the right player!) This horn just got back from a good overhaul with correct flat metal resonators, and it exceeded even my high expectations. It is HUGE and warm and velvety smooth playing. It’s really a joy to play. With burnished gold plate and an incredible portrait engraving, who could ask for more in a saxophone?

Here is a nice vintage Conn alto saxophone from 1923 that still has most of its original burnished (rare) gold plating intact, together with deluxe engraving. It has the original neck, rolled tone holes, and a nice clean body tube, bell and bow. This alto will have a big, warm tone capable both of playing sweetly or blowing the walls down. These early Conns are really fun to play, and you get used to the ergonomics after a couple of weeks. The pitch is typically good, but flexible, so that you have a lot of control over it and can bend it how you like. A medium to large chamber mouthpiece is recommended for easy intonation. The engraving is especially nice on this horn. It is the burnished gold finish, which was one of the best finishes Conn made, and which they apparently reserved for their best-playing horns.

This is a beautiful Conn New Wonder I tenor SN# 144580 that is only 136 serial numbers after Lester Young’s tenor (SN#144444). That means that it was probably made within a week of Prez’s most famous (gold-plated) horn, which is one of the most important horns in the history of jazz. The sound is quite similar if you use either a very vintage Link with a small tip opening, or a Brilhart (but I like it best with the Link). This horn is in excellent condition with no dents or dings on the horn or the neck. The whole thing is super-clean with only some minor wear to the silver plating in a few places. If you’re looking for a great-sounding tenor for big band or jazz, or if you’re looking for a really collectible vintage tenor, this could be the horn for you.

It also has hands down the nicest looking engraving in the little cabin scene on the bell. The detail and shading in this scene shows the mark of a truly masterful engraver – probably one of the famous Stenberg brothers, who did Conn’s best engraving. If there’s an engraving-guru who cruises the site, maybe you could tell me if it’s Julius or Charles!

This is a beautiful example of a Conn Transitional alto saxophone. This particular horn is one of the most desirable versions of a transitional alto, with the coveted geometrical art deco engraving pattern only seen on a subset of transitional horns, and left side bell keys (and with a smooth, squared-off G# key at this serial range by the way). It is original silver plate which looks incredible and is basically all there. Neck is original and looks great. It has not been dented or pulled down. The neck octave key saddle popped off and has been carefully resoldered, leaving very little trace. The pads feel great under the fingers and the body tube vibrates in your hands with its own resonance. This is just how the best vintage Conn saxophones should play.

These horns have a big, warm, powerful, projecting tone that fills up a room with ease. The intonation is typically good-though-flexible, and slot in well with a medium or large chamber mouthpiece. These horns are very affordable right now, so it’s a great time to buy an amazingly beautiful, gold-plated horn for just 1/3 the price of paying for gold plating only (apart from the horn) on any modern horn. Plus, Conn craftsmanship from this period is just awesome.

This is a beautiful original gold-plated Conn New Wonder II alto saxophone. It has almost all of its original gold plating intact, and it looks beautiful. This is a very early transitional New Wonder II, with the raised high E key, but it is still basically a NWII.  In gold, they are an extremely good deal right now – you get the whole horn for about half of what it would cost just to gold plate an existing horn in today’s world. This horn is a great serial number as well, and it will certainly continue to go up in value for years to come.

Conn New Wonder II Baritone Silver Plate Aaron Barnard Overhaul Mulligan Serial Fantastic! 189676

At this price, I’m actually losing money on this horn. If you pay by a low fee payment method, I might make a few bucks overall. It was a labor of love though. These 189k NWII baritones are among the best bari saxes ever, and this one deserved the full overhaul and a nice new case.

Conn New Wonder II Burnished Gold Portrait Alto 209xxx

This is one of the most beautiful and perfect Conn altos that I have ever seen. It’s basically a 10/10 in all categories. No past damage, no repairs, original super-thick gold plate. Burnished gold is hand-applied, and it is much thicker and much rarer than regular thin, matte gold plate. The hand-engraved portrait on the bell shows a level of artistry very rarely seen in saxophone engraving. Everything about the portrait is done artistically and with unusual care and precision. As a player, this horn is a real powerhouse. It has a mix of older and newer pads, and the tone is big, wide, sweet. It’s fantastic.

If you are looking for a vintage Conn alto that is the best that I can be, look no further. If you want to get a matching burnished gold alto and soprano pair, I have a rare soprano just like this at present!
