This is an original, gold plated Conn New Wonder II ‘Chu Berry’ Alto Saxophone. It is extremely clean, with 99% of the gold plate. It has no dents, no dings, no resolders, and no past repairs. This sax has just had a repad new felts and corks as well. It has been gently hand polished so that it is now gleaming and looks nearly new. It is hard to beat the tone of the Conn New Wonder II altos. The ergonomics are definitely not up to modern standards, but you get used to it, and what you lose in comfort, you gain in sound. This horn has a big, warm, smoky tone with lots of character.

The most lively vintage alto – the one that shakes in your hands, blows down walls, and whispers most sweetly – is the Conn New Wonder II ‘Chu Berry.’ These horns are not that expensive right now – they used to be a lot more than this. And this one is a rare gold-plated example in near mint condition. It has been carefully hand polished (pictures are before polishing and will be updated soon) and it is ready for new pads. You can’t buy gold plated horns anymore that are plated with thick gold like this, because gold has become too expensive. Even back in the 20’s, Conn reserved the gold plate finish for its best-playing horns.  These altos are so fun to play, and the tone is so warm, lyrical, and inviting, that you won’t mind the older keywork.

Conn New Wonder II Chu Berry Alto Saxophone Relacquer 1930 Good Pads Great Deal 236664

This is a Conn New Wonder II Transitional alto saxophone from 1930. The new coat of paint it got made the price go down, but didn’t hurt the playability. This horn came to me playing pretty well on its current pads. It hasn’t been freshly overhauled, but it does play on the current setup. That makes it a great deal, because you get the beautiful big, warm Conn tone for under $1k, which is crazy. Again, it’s not as good as a fresh overhaul, but it’s pretty good. This horn is pre-war, if you’re looking for that, and it has rolled tone holes. By ‘transitional’ in the title, I mean that it was made very late in the New Wonder II (or ‘Chu Berry’) run, and it has some features that anticipate the 6M or ‘artist’ or ‘naked lady’ or ‘lady face’ (I could go on. Conn nomenclature is kind of convoluted.) It’s basically a New Wonder II, but it has the raised high E side key and a few other small changes like palm key shapes and possibly a different neck though I’m not sure about that.

It includes the case in the photos as well.

Conn New Wonder II Curved Soprano 220xxx Late Example! Original Silver High F Fresh Overhaul!

        $ 4,250

If you want the best, the most beautiful, the rarest, and the highest quality overhaul all in one soprano, then this is the one for you. You can get a ‘normal’ (older, not overhauled, more worn) Conn curved soprano for a lot less, but it will not be like this. This Conn curved soprano is for the connoisseur, the collector, and the discerning player.

The general rule for buying these, in my view, is to get the latest curved soprano that you can find. This one is in just about the last batch of them made before the Great Depression brought an end to the ‘saxophone craze’ that let saxophone selection proliferate in the 1920’s.  Like every Conn curved soprano it had a couple of key guard feet resoldered, and that is it for past repairs. They look good, and are not at all glaring. The neck is particularly nice. The bell flare and body tube are undamaged.

It just got a complete high-end overhaul and gentle hand polish and cleaning The resonators are the correct, medium-sided flat metal with rivet, for an authentic look. They look great. An overhaul is a big job, and that’s now done, so this horn is back to factory fresh or better playing condition. Better, the pad work feels better than the reso-pad job found on these originally. It’s tight, snappy, and positive under the fingers. Pad heights are just right, and all the little details that distinguish a really good overhaul from a mediocre one are present and correct on this horn.

Playing wise, this soprano is a monster. It’s warm, round, broad, and room-filling, even at low volumes. When pushed, it is almost too loud. It wants to project over a band. The tone is completely different from modern sopranos. Much more warm and medium-dark, almost like a larger saxophone voice squeezed into the small soprano body. The intonation is quite good, and this works well with a wider range of mouthpieces than many sopranos. I used my Bilger Morgan, and it sounds great. But a modern Yanagisawa HR or even a vintage Buescher will all work, so there’s a good range. This is easily one of my favorite vintage sopranos that I have ever played. If you are looking for a new dimension to add to your playing, a curved soprano like this is interesting and stimulating. A whole fresh world to explore. It also looks great on stage, and catches eyes if you’re a full time performer.

Just for fun, here’s a clip Dave Koz playing his silver Conn curved soprano with postmodern jukebox. Also, be sure to check out Keenan McKenzie’s curved Conn soprano playing in a 30’s swing setting. So great, and tons of fun!

This is a rare burnished gold, portrait Conn New Wonder II soprano sax. It is really rare to see a portrait on a Conn soprano, and this one is particularly nice. It looks exactly like a Barn Owl, so some bird enthusiast out there should grab this very special horn and play it! I am a bird lover myself, and I am really tempted to keep this saxophone. Besides being a rare portrait model, it is also burnished gold, not the much more common matte gold. That means that this is thicker gold plate that was applied and smoothed laboriously using a hand burnishing tool! Way more special even than normal gold plate. In addition, this horn has a recent overhaul done with black roo pads, and it plays really well on them. It includes one of the nicest original cases that I have seen also. All in all, this is a package that is hard to beat.

Conn New Wonder II Sopranino Original Silver, Overhauled 153973

This is a rare and beautiful example of a Conn New Wonder II SopraNINO Saxophone in original silver plate. It has a recent overhaul done at Saxquest, and it’s ready to play, right out of the case. They used black kangaroo leather pads and noyek/hollywood waffle style resonators. Black felts complete the look.

The great thing about Conn sopranos and sopraninos is that they are warmer, darker, and rounder tonally than what you might think of as a typical sopranino or soprano tone. More like an alto and less like an oboe than modern instruments tend to sound, if that makes any sense. These horns tune well with the right mouthpiece. This one doesn’t come with an original Conn piece, but we can discuss options if you don’t have one already.

It would be hard to find a Conn sopranino in better condition than this. It’s the nicest one I’ve had in years. They’re hard to find in any condition, but original silver and no evidence of past repairs like this is very special.

This is a beautiful, gold plated example of a Conn New Wonder II soprano saxophone. It has almost all of its original thick gold plate intact. I went for years without being able to find one of these gold NWII’s, so if you are wanting a really rich, pleasant soprano sound together with the most beautiful horn possible, you may want to grab this one before it disappears. Once it is polished, it will look nearly new.

This is a beautiful, gold plated example of a Conn New Wonder II soprano saxophone. It has almost all of its original thick gold plate intact. The only past repair is that a crease was removed from the bell flare. It also needs a full repad. After that it will play with a rich, warm, complex tone that is far bigger and warmer than modern sopranos. Conn New Wonder II Soprano Original Gold Plate Overhauled with Mods Front F 199071

This is a gold plated (not lacquered but actual gold plate finish) vintage Conn New Wonder II soprano saxophone in excellent condition. It has a recent full overhaul, meaning all new pads, corks, felts, oil, and a lot of labor spent tuning it up and setting everything up to top playing condition. That’s a big plus on this horn. It also got a front F key added custom as part of the overhaul. The tone is the main reason to buy a vintage Conn. It has a wide, powerful, medium dark tone that loves a large chamber mouthpiece and sounds completely different from the oboe-like modern soprano sound. It’s more saxophone-like than a modern horn. You’d be hard-pressed to find a warmer, more pleasant soprano to play, or a more beautiful soprano for a better price. Not to mention the gold plate, the fancy engraving, and the added front F. It’s a great deal! Only one available!

This is a mint original Conn New Wonder II soprano SN 154xxx. It has no past repairs, no dents, no dings, nothing. It’s still in its original bare brass finish as they came from the factory at this time. It still has all of its white kid leather pads from the factory as well. The nailfile G# key is super-crisp and shows how little this horn has been played. People buy these 80-90 year-old sopranos for one reason above all: they have the warmest, fattest sound that you can get on soprano while also having relatively good intonation. The intonation is both good and also fairly flexible, so if a particular note isn’t quite there, you can easily make the necessary adjustment. Ergonomics are decidedly not modern, but if you love the tone, then the keywork becomes easy and second-nature in a few weeks of playing.

This is an unlacquered Conn NWII soprano that has a good overhaul done a few years ago and that plays well. This is a nice clean soprano that has a big, warm tone that you can’t get on any modern soprano. The keywork is vintage, of course, but not bad. The intonation is flexible, which means that if you have a decent ear, you can play this horn in tune with no problem. The main reason to get one of these is for the big, medium dark, resonant, rich Conn tone. By comparison, every modern soprano is brighter, more focused, and less resonant. There are advantages in modern sopranos, but for many players, those are outweighed by the tone that you can get on a vintage pro soprano like this.

Conn New Wonder II Soprano Saxophone Mint GOLD Plate Matt Stohrer Overhaul!

Mint condition, original gold plate Conn soprano from the best serial range. Full overhaul by Matt Stohrer, who does exceptionally good work on vintage Conns. This horn has such a wide, warm, room-filling tone, that it is a complete joy to play. You will sound 1000% better than a Mark VI soprano on this horn. The tone is light years ahead – round, warm, complex, and pleasant to listen to. Not nasal, not pinched or oboe-like. These like large chamber mouthpieces. You can bend notes all over the place if you want also and get a surprisingly easy glissando (for a saxophone).

You could look around for many years and not find a better soprano than this. Matt’s overhaul is over $1500 of added value. He spends a full day just meticulously polishing every little nook and cranny. It’s as close to going back in time and buying a brand new Chu Berry soprano as you could find. The thick, satin gold plate is even more beautiful in person, and is quite resistant to tarnish or wear.

This soprano is as close to new condition as you could ask for, being over 80 years old. It includes the original case, mouthpiece, lyre, and included screwdriver. These horns all have a big, warm, spread tone that is what makes them so desirable for players today. It is impossible to get this sound on a modern soprano. It is also a very “live” horn, with unusual resonance in the body tube when you push it. The intonation on a vintage Conn is very good, but also flexible. This gives you a lot of control as a player, and it requires that you have a good ear as well. In exchange, you get a smooth, velvety tone that is well worth the outdated ergonomics. This soprano is going to make someone very happy (and it might just be me– I really bought this one for myself!).

A serious contender for the best combination of beauty and tone in the history of saxophones is any gold-plated vintage Conn New Wonder. This horn is the rarer burnished gold finish, which, if you have ever used a burnisher, you will already know is extremely labor-intensive to apply. There are no burnished gold saxophones made today because both the cost of gold and the cost of labor have become prohibitive. And there are no saxophones today engraved like these artist-level Conns, with their fine lines, intricate patterns, and generally satisfying aesthetic. The gold plated ones have also generally been outstanding players when they were in good physical condition and overhauled well.

Conn New Wonder II Tenor Original Gold Plate Near Mint Fresh Overhaul Excellent Player 198048

If you watch gold plated Conns, you will know that this one is uncommonly clean and original. It is the most perfect gold Conn that I have seen for sale in the last year or two, actually since another gold one much like this that also sold on GetASax.

Really beautiful gold plated Conn tenors are very hard to find. Yes, the keywork isn’t like your P Mauriat, but hey, neither is the tone! You adjust for the sake of the sound. Besides, the bell keys are really not so bad, and the stacks are plenty comfortable if you have medium to large hands. You can also mod these a bit to decrease the bis key reach or whatever. That’s easily done.

This is a truly gorgeous example. The neck is in great shape, as is the body tube, bell and bow. There’s a post resoldered by the G# key, and it was done very well, so it is almost invisible. There are no other past repairs, and no dent work that I know of. This tenor just got a complete overhaul and plays effortlessly. Low Bb is just another note, subtone is easy, response is quick. It has This is the version with the more comfortable palm key shape, not that that is a huge concern. The resonators are from TenorMadness and are the premium, machined, slightly-domed brass reusable type. They look great against the gold.

If you’re one of those people who really wants your vintage saxophone to look nearly new, this is one of those rare opportunities that only come up every couple of years at best. It would be hard to beat this tenor. The price also includes the new BAM case in the photos. If you want a Conn tone but at a lower price, check out a lacquered NWII or similar. The gold ones are very rare, and just the gold plate would cost more than the asking price of the horn if you did it today!

Price Reduced July 21 2021! Get it while it’s available!

This is a desirable late example of a Conn New Wonder II Tenor Saxophone ‘Chu Berry’ in original gold plate! Gold plated Conns are the hardest to find of all the finishes, and they are the favorites of many players and collectors all over the world. The 11 Karat ‘coin gold’ used on Conns like this is a harder alloy, lighter in color, and is a durable finish that looks gorgeous and takes a long time to tarnish. This horn has some lacquer over the gold to protect it in some places. It would shine up and look more even with the lacquer removed, but it’s on consignment, and I’m not authorized to get that done at the moment. You could have it done for $200 by a repairman and the horn would go up a couple of notches in cosmetic condition. It has been played a lot, as you can see – wear on the touch points, some key guards and posts resoldered from popping off over time. This happens on 80 year old instruments, and its no big deal. There’s nothing major to report repair wise, except that the neck on this horn is from a New Wonder 1 Im’m told. Conn necks aren’t numbered or marked, so it’s not like you can really tell, but the gold is a slightly different look in person. The neck plays great! The NW1 necks sometimes feel a little wider and wilder to play than the NWII’s, and this horn has that wide, room-filling quality to it for sure.

This gold NWII tenor had a complete high end overhaul in the last couple of years, and it plays great on it! It resonates throughout the whole body tube, and it feels ‘dry’ and snappy under the fingers, like a Conn should when overhauled properly. An overhaul like that costs a lot of money, and you’re getting it nearly for free at this price, so this should be an excellent deal for someone! I mean, for the price of a new ‘name brand’ Chinese horn at Sam Ash, you can get one of the best tenors ever WITH a top shelf overhaul, in actual gold plate.

Conn New Wonder II Tenor Saxophone 1927 Overhauled Original Nickel Plate 203475

Super clean, overhauled example of a Conn New Wonder II Tenor saxophone ‘Chu Berry’ in original nickel plate. Nickel Conns don’t get as much attention these days, but they tend to be excellent players. I think this is partly because the finish is just so tough and durable, that the nickel examples are always original finish. I don’t make any finish/tone claims on the site, but I’ve noticed these to be consistently beasts in the playing department over the years.

This is a nice later style New Wonder II tenor with the updated palm key design, and it was overhauled by another dealer a couple of years ago. The overhaul is good, but maybe not amazing, so you should plan on spending at least a little on setup to get it feeling how you like. It’s on consignment, so I can’t spend money on it myself. However, it is priced low, and someone will get a great deal on a very clean Conn Chu Berry from the best serial range.

There are very few past repairs on this. I keep going over and over it, and I don’t see anything at all! Which is remarkable for an 84 year old instrument. Maybe the octave saddle on the neck is resoldered, but I think it may not be. The nickel is so durable that you can’t see a tidy solder repair at all. That’s nice if you are one of those people who wants to play a Conn but doesn’t want to be able to see any repairs. You can get things fixed on this as needed, without leaving a trace, if your repairman knows what he’s doing.

Conn New Wonder II Tenor Saxophone 210xxx Lacquered Needs Overhaul Great Deal!

This is a solid Conn New Wonder Series II tenor saxophone that is just a standard overhaul away from being a fantastic saxophone.  These are not easy to find in decent shape, as they tend to have been played hard over the years. This horn is priced to compete, but unlike a similarly priced horn on ebay, this one isn’t hiding any crushing disappointments or unholy travesties of botched repair.

This sax looks like it started like as a bare brass instrument and then was given a coat of lacquer later, probably during its first overhaul judging by the color and type of lacquer.  This was a relatively common event during the time period when Conn first starting phasing out the bare brass finish- you’d send your horn back to the factory for its first overhaul and they would give it a coat of lacquer.  Since it didn’t require buffing off the old lacquer and was done at the factory by professionals, it is a much less invasive procedure than the ham-handed local repair shop relacquers of the 1960s and onward that have given the process a bad name.  But the market doesn’t quite understand the or reflect the difference between this “first lacquer” horn and a relacquer, so you can score yourself quite a bargain with this Conn tenor, which is in better than average shape for a lower than average price.

We pay the best prices for great saxophones.

As you can see, this is an extremely clean example of a gold-plated Conn New Wonder II. The price includes having the horn overhauled and hand-polished by Matt Stohrer, who is one of the best repair guys in the country, and who specializes in these kinds of horns. This horn is in all-original condition, with original pads intact, it would appear. It comes in its original case as well. The gold plate is about 98%+ present, with hardly any wear. There are not dents or dings or past repairs at all. It’s going to be a beast when it’s overhauled – shining gold, huge sound. If you’re coming from a comparatively tame modern Selmer or Yamaha, this kind of vintage Conn can be almost too much sound at first, until you learn to tame the horn!

As you can see, this is an extremely clean example of a gold-plated Conn New Wonder II. This horn is also in very good playing condition and has mostly new pads. It has an unusually BIG sound, even for a Conn “Chu Berry.” Playing wise, this horn is a beast – shining gold, huge sound. If you’re coming from a comparatively tame modern Selmer or Yamaha, this kind of vintage Conn can be almost too much sound at first, until you learn to tame the horn! This is lots of fun, and for once, the guitarists and brass players will be asking you to please not play so loudly all the time… This is pure 1920’s-30’s jazz power: big, smoky, warm – lots of complexity to make it interesting to listen to.

This is a beautiful Conn New Wonder II Transitional Alto with silver plate finish and a fresh overhaul. It is totally ready to go right out of the case, and it should be great fun to play. It has a big, vintage Conn sound. These transitional Conns are the best of the vintage Conns in my experience. They have a big, warm tone that is perfect for a wide range of playing. The intonation on this horn is good, and it’s one where you can bend the notes easily, so if you have a decent ear, you should be great in any register. I think this horn should make someone really happy. It’s priced to be a super deal for an overhauled golden age Conn.

Conn New Wonder II Transitional Tenor 251370 Needs Restoration Aubra Graves

This is one of Aubra Graves’s Conn tenors that he used on his super popular Youtube videos. It’s from his estate, and it needs a full restoration to play its best again. Conns are extremely well made instruments, and the 251k serial range is just about the best sounding version they ever made. But it will be an extensive overhaul, as the horn is pretty rough at the moment. Have your repairperson take a look at photos before you buy it. That said, it’s priced great and will be a fantastic horn when it’s done. These are SO fun to play, and you can also be part of the Aubra fan club with it. Pop on a bright mouthpiece like a Berg metal, add some reverb to the mix and ‘go practice’ and you can get that fat-but-bright jazz tenor sound on this with ease.

This is a nice old Conn Soprano from the mid 1920’s. This is just before the nailfile G# key. It has almost all its original plating and all keys move and are in great shape. It has old pads and needs a repad to play well. These are great sopranos with a full, warm tone that is better than any modern soprano. The intonation is good but not great. You need to have a good sense of pitch because notes tend to be flexible – easy to bend up or down. This is a great horn in great shape that should make any player very happy, and it is being sold at a great price as well.

Conn NW1 C Melody Straight Neck Burnished Gold Portrait Engraving 76817

Wow! This is a beautiful, nearly 100% gold PLATED Conn C melody saxophone. People are always confused about this, but this is very thick, actual gold on this saxophone, not lacquered brass finish. And the burnished gold is thicker than regular gold plate as well. Conn reserved this finish for a select few special-ordered instruments that were given the best, most beautiful, most durable finish that Conn offered. These also got a ‘portrait’ or some kind of special engraved scene. This one seems to fall into the mythology category, and shows maybe a wind god? Apollo was a popular portrait theme, as the god of music, but this may be Zephyrus, the god of Wind. Almost looks like a Loki variant, with the horns 😉

This C melody has the more desirable straight neck that plays better, and it has rolled tone holes. It has original factory pads, that are nearly 100 years old, so definitely plan on getting this cleaned up and repadded. The gold is basically totally intact, so it will look like new again with a gentle hand polish. It’s hard to communicate just how beautiful these instruments are when they’re polished up. Even with 100 years of tarnish, it’s a beauty. With the GS RESO C Melody mouthpiece, Conn c melody saxophones sound way better – basically a tenor type tone but in concert pitch. Check out our C melody / RESO sound clip here.

Fresh shell reinforcement and repair, internal padding and fabric, added latch, new handle, fresh coat of paint, and case feet. I am tempted to keep it for when I eventually find a nice later Conn bass. NOTE: This case ONLY fits the ‘plumber neck’ version NWII/14M, NOT the NW1 and earlier Conn bass with a neck that looks like a bari sax.

Conn NWII Soprano Burnished Gold w/ Train Portrait Plays Great! 184812

You never see burnished Conn sopranos with special portrait engraving. This one has a train scene, which I find extremely delightful. This beautiful gold-plated soprano saxophone was also recently overhauled and plays well on the fresh pads. There’s no significant past damage. Original gold plate.

The tone is warm, spread, and pleasant to listen to. Compared to modern sopranos, it almost sounds like a different instrument. It’s hard to capture on the recording below, but listen with good headphones and you’ll get a rough idea. It’s better in person!!

I’ve only seen one other portrait soprano like this, and it had an owl on it and sold in 1 day.

Nice, clean old pads Conn New Wonder II soprano in original silver plate. This horn has lacquer over the silver, which I have seen on some other old Conn saxophones from this period, so it may be original lacquer over silver. You could easily strip the lacquer and it would look brand new when overhauled and hand polished. These horns have a big, wide, warm, velvety tone and flexible-but-good intonation with a large chamber soprano mouthpiece. Link Tone Edge works well, for example. This one is a solid example that shouldn’t be too difficult of an overhaul, and that still plays on the existing pads (makes saxophone noises – doesn’t play well, but you can get an idea).

Conn NWII Transitional Tenor 238k 1930 with MODERN keywork by Palo Tung UNIQUE!

                                    Price just lowered!

This is a really unique and cool vintage Conn tenor with modern keywork! Palo Tung of Just Saxes spent a ton of time on this Conn conversion.

It is essentially three saxophones put together into one. The Conn transitional tenor is the horn, which is just about my favorite vintage of all time for Conn tone, with a bigger, wider tone than the 10M, but with more focus and somewhat easier tuning than the NWII. Take that horn, and then add the main stack keywork from a Keilwerth, and the palm and pinky keys from a Just Saxes ‘Crescent’ modern tenor, and put all that together into one horn and that is what you have here. The keywork feels pretty good under the fingers – not super slick, but it falls easily under the fingers and the palm and pinky keys are particularly comfortable. The key is functionality. If you have always wanted to play a Conn, but you just can’t deal with the NWII style keywork, then this is one of the few options that you have. I’m told Palo has only made two or three of these ever, and the amount of work involved is, of course, enormous. The price on this horn is far lower than you would normally pay, and it should sell quickly. I have seen other Conn conversions selling $11-14k, but this one is being sold second hand, so you can save a ton on the labor compared to paying to have it done yourself. If you want to pair this with a new BAM case, I can find one that fits it well, and give you a good deal. That would be a good idea for shipping and for gigging.

There is most certainly only one available!!

Conn NWII/14M BASS Sax desirable ‘plumber neck’ SUPER CLEAN original nickel plate AMAZING 154026 High Eb

This is one beautiful Conn bass saxophone. It has its original nickel plate finish. Nickel is great because it lasts forever. Like literally forever, and it doesn’t tarnish either. Just stays looking great no matter what you throw at it. Plus, Conn aficionados tell me they find nickel to be loud and resonant compared to lacquer. Maybe that’s just because that’s how Conns always play, or maybe not having lacquer on there does free up a bit of extra vibration.

This horn is in very very good condition. You almost never see a vintage Bass that has survived with this few past repairs (almost none) and this little dent work (again almost none). This horn was sold in the past by Bruno Waltersbacher, in Germany, and the nice case that comes with the horn has the Waltersbacher case logo on it. I’m guessing it was he who added the reinforced key arm on low C, which gives you more of a flat pad cup on that note, and is definitely an improvement.

As you can see, this horn has the plumber neck, which is the last version of bass sax neck that Conn made. Same neck that is on the later baritones. Compared to my personal 229k Conn bass, and the other later Conn basses that I have seen, the only real difference here is that this horn is keyed to high Eb. If you have to have that high note, well, switch to baritone, haha. This bass has good pads, not a fresh overhaul, but it plays quite well on the current overhaul. I’m including a thorough tune up pre-sale. Shipping a bass takes some special practices, but I have done it enough times to be able to do it with confidence. It’s not so expensive to ship either, though pickup is ideal if you can swing it.

Well here’s something of a unicorn.  A well overhauled vintage baritone in good shape without any gremlins hiding around the corner, and although it has the 12M body tube AND is keyed to high F, because it is a Pan-American (Conn’s second line brand) it is cheap, baritonely speaking.  Plus, this horn is just so fun to play. The overhaul was done with black kangaroo skin pads and domed resonators, the key heights are correct (12Ms like fairly open key heights) and even the neck tenon receiver has been replaced with a very well done custom replacement- which is amazing and excellent because those neck receivers are a major pain point, almost always leaking or cracked and not easy to replace well and impossible to replace cheap.

Physically, the horn has seen a good bit of use and has the scratches and dings to prove it, but it has no major damage, the neck is in good shape, the keywork is tight, and its ready to play reliably for years out of the box.  The lacquer looks to be original, though I find it harder to tell with Pan-Americans since they sprayed it over the engraving a lot of the time. At least it certainly doesn’t look to have been buffed to my eyes. The toneholes are straight, not rolled, but other than that this is basically a Conn 12M and it plays just like one- that is to say with an enormous, rich tone that makes playing a joy and listening a treat.

Curiously, at some point in the past, somebody installed adjustment screws on the bar for the C# and F# in the upper and lower stacks, like a modern Yamaha.  It was well done, and would not have been cheap. Combined with the neck tenon receiver replacement and professional quality overhaul, the person who owned this before I did clearly cared a great deal about it and spent a lot of well-aimed money with a talented repairer making it an exceptional baritone- and they succeeded.  This baritone is worth more than it will sell for, and the next owner is a very lucky person.

Conn Panamerican (New Wonder 1) Bass Saxophone Silver Plate Recent Overhaul

This is a fantastic example of a Conn bass saxophone with original silver plate in very good shape. It was restored by Mark Aaronson and then put away without being played much at all. The neck is replated, I think, but the rest looks original. It has the features of a late Conn New Wonder 1, like around 120-140k (wild guess) bass. The way Panamerican works is that when Conn starts making a new model under its own name, the Panamerican is made with the previous model’s tooling. So this is basically a Conn bass with NW1 design, made while Conn was making the NWII under its own name. You’d be hard-pressed to find a nicer bass for a better price. It also comes with a fancy Gard gig bag that makes this bass effortless to wheel around. Only one available!!

For your collectors out there, here’s a complete, early Conn high pitch Bb soprano SN# 4xxx. It plays a little bit, but it needs an overhaul to play its best, so it’s being sold as-is. It includes the original mouthpiece and the original case. The engraving (scroll down!) is beautiful and shows a style that is more ornate than many later Conns. The silver and gold two-tone look is particularly nice, and will look even better after a bit of polishing.

If you are looking for the ultimate vintage bari, this is it. There is nothing better for tone, warmth, and power than a transitional 12M. This is the bari made famous by Gerry Mulligan (though he also used the previous model Conn baritone as well at times). Mulligan played his transitional with a Gale Hollywood 5 Baritone mouthpiece, but it works very well with any vintage large chamber piece, like an Otto Link (rubber or metal) a Conn, Babbit and many others.

Well, we have been getting lucky recently by finding some of the nicest baritone saxophones in the world. One of the hardest to find in anything like good condition is the legendary Conn 12M, not to mention the transitional ones. These golden age Conn baritones were made in small numbers for a few short years and they are still easily the most desirable vintage baritone, more than any of the vintage Selmers. If you want to hear one in action, you can check out Gerry Mulligan and Harry Carney who both played this model.

This is as beautiful a transitional 12M as I have ever seen. It is beyond rare to see an original lacquer vintage bari this nice, let alone the holy grail of baritone saxophones. It has an older repad that has had virtually no playing time on it, and it just got a checkup and now plays quite easily down to low Bb. This is the earliest original lacquer Conn baritone that I have seen, and it is also one of the earliest original-lacquered Conns of any kind.

Here is one of my favorite horns in stock right now, and one that would be the jewel of many a Conn saxophone collection. It is a rare transitional art deco curved soprano in near mint condition. I have seen two of these horns come up for sale in the past 5 years, and both were pretty worn. This one is really near mint. The serial is 220xxx, but Conn sopranos serials are all over the place, as you can tell, since the horn has 240xxx-250xxx engraving. It is easily one of the nicest examples of this super-rare saxophone that exists. Whether you are a serious collector or a soprano player in search of a unique and uniquely-great horn, this would be hard to beat.

This… (Doug Demuro voice)… is a vintage Conn 4M curved soprano with art deco engraving and original silver plate. You rarely see ‘later’ Conn curved sopranos like this come up for sale. The serial is 220k but the engraving matches up to 1930-31 Conn build, which is when this would have been put together and sold. I have only seen a handful of curved sopranos later than this, and i have never noticed any design changes after this version, except that the very late ones have the ‘naked lady’ / Conn 6M / Conn ‘Artist’ style engraving, where this one has the art deco style engraving from 1931 or so.

This beautiful soprano also has a full overhaul done by Music Medic in Wilmington, NC. It plays well, and feels good under the fingers. The MM overhaul is extremely expensive, and the owner of this consigned soprano isn’t going to get all that money back on the sale in added value, which is good news for you, the buyer. This wasn’t played very much after being overhauled, and the pads are still in nearly new condition. The one cosmetic issue is the Eb guard, which isn’t original. A matching, original style guard could be fabricated and matched to the horn pretty easily, so if you want to do that, you can discuss that with me. I’ve done it before on other horns, but I can’t on this one since it’s consignment. It also has a strap hook balancer installed, that makes the instrument hang in a more balanced way, but that’s easily removable if you want. This also comes with both the original Conn case, and a custom-made wheeled case with custom formed foam with fabric over it inside to keep this saxophone ultra safe. The new case is heavy, but it is very protective, and I’m happy that it’s here to make shipping so easy.

I have only seen about five later Conn curved sopranos for sale ever, which makes them as rare as the 14M bass. This is priced low I think, for what it is. If you just want any old curved soprano, rather than a rare and collectible one, check out the Yanagisawa I have for sale that is priced super low and also plays great. But if you want one of the most collectible vintage Conn sopranos, that also has a BIG, warm, fat, velvety tone and is lots of fun to play, then you should definitely get this, because I have no idea when I might get another one in, and this also already has the overhaul done and included in the price.

Price includes another overhaul done to your specifications, but I can sell it as is cheaper. It is just about my favorite vintage of Conn – transitional between the New Wonder II and the 6M “Artist” model, and early SN# but with 6M style keywork. If you have one of these for sale, please let me know, because I will pay a good price for it as my particular favorite.

This unusual Conn alto appears to be a later transitional 6M, but it is stamped 206xxxAX. I have been told by a couple of different Conn Conn experts that the X in a serial number probably means experimental. If that is true, then it would mean that Conn continued producing the popular New Wonder II model for quite a while after they had developed the 6M. As a collector’s item, something like this is cool to have. As a saxophone to play, it is hard to beat the sound of a transitional Conn alto in any case. Does anybody else out there whom I haven’t already talked to have an experimental Conn? If so, let me know! For you collectors out there, this is a rare opportunity to buy a collectible horn that I have been holding onto for some time now.

This is an incredibly stunning example of an art deco engraved original silver plated Conn ‘transitional’ 6M alto saxophone. It cleaned up just as nicely as I hoped it would, with the gold wash all thick and bright. This was basically a time capsule that is now ready for its first owner, more or less. It is a HUGE player with an effortless low register, fat, full upper register, great intonation, and a ton of projection. You can tell I love conns from this specific period. It’s frankly kind of absurd that you can buy this level of instrument for anything like this price. It holds its own with the best altos you could find, regardless of price. Who knows when I’ll get another one this clean.

This is a great deal on one of those special ‘transitional’ Conn tenor saxophones that have a huge following. They combine the huge sound of a New Wonder II with some of the ergonomic and tuning improvements of a 10M, and they are also pretty hard to find in good shape. This one is NICE. It’s relacquered, but it looks like it was done just to make the horn look great again, and not to deal with underlying mechanical problems. That’s the kind of relacquer you want. Doesn’t do much of anything to the sound in my experience. The basic condition of the horn is more important than the new coat of paint, and this one is beautiful! It also has a fresh overhaul done by Eric Wistreich at Meridian Winds in Michigan, which is a speciality woodwind shop with decades of experience.

The tone is big, warm, medium dark, and pretty spread. Nothing plays like a Conn – it’s hard to put in words the actual experience of playing one – the vibration of the horn under your fingers as the body tube comes alive – the wideness of the sound – the effortless way that you get a velvety smooth tone that fills a room. That’s why folks keep coming back to these. Once you play one, you’re hooked. I play a 10M with the GS SLANT 7* on tenor, and I sound a lot better than I deserve to. It’s a really excellent combination.

So here, for a bargain price, you get one of the best Conns ever, plus a fresh overhaul, and the horn is also beautiful because of the carefully done refinish. That’s really pretty good.

This is a super-rare example of a burnished gold Conn 247xxx transitional tenor saxophone with full art deco engraving on the bell. The burnished gold Conns were the top finish offered at this time, and they are ridiculously rare. I know of three or four in existence, and a few other matte gold transitionals, but we are talking about very small numbers here. This horn has been played and played because it is an exceedingly good player with pure 30’s jazz power in ample supply. If you are looking for a saxophone that is super-resonant, has a huuuge sound, tons of mojo, and that rare/collectible/investment factor, and is also very beautiful and it top top playing condition, then this could be the horn for you. If it suddenly disappears, that is because I am strongly tempted to keep this one.

If you read around on this site you will see that I have a very high opinion of vintage Conn saxophones. And I buy too many of them, but I just can’t help myself (In the few months, I have had SN#’s 247k, 250k, 251k, 252k, 253k, 254k, 257k etc). Conn made AMAZING saxophones during its prime years of 1925-1945, during which time the Conn factory was the largest (and arguably best) musical instrument factory in the world. The professional models of these “prewar” Conns are extremely well-made, and they are simply a joy to play. This is a gorgeous horn in the prime serial range for a Conn transitional. It has a fresh, high-quality overhaul with all new pads, corks, felts and rollers, done by Dan Hansen of Katy, TX. Dan’s work is detail oriented and very good. The only past repairs are the resoldered post by the side Bb key, and a few small dents removed from the back of the bow. That’s pretty minimal for an 80 year old saxophone!

This is one of the nicer original lacquer Transitional tenors that I have seen. It is also one of the earliest original lacquer Conns that I have seen come through, because Conn didn’t lacquer saxophones until just before this one was made. This kind of clean horn does not come along often from the early 1930’s and is a solid deal for someone looking for a top quality vintage Conn. This is not your run of the mill, beat up old Conn tenor. Very few of the remaining horns out there are both in the prime serial range for split bell key transitionals (around 250xxx) and also in good original physical condition.  So get this one, and start having fun with one of the best and biggest sounding tenor saxophones ever made.

Here is a beautiful bare brass The Martin Baritone with a fresh overhaul by Aaron Barnard, who is one of the best techs in the USA. This bari is a good choice for anyone who is looking for the best tone possible on bari and for a horn that is beautiful, totally tight and ready to go. Saxophone guru Steve Goodson calls ‘The Martin Baritone’ the best vintage bari, and for good reason. These horns have the biggest, fattest sound, and they can project very well too. The feel of the horn is very different from the much lighter Conn 12M. The Martin Baritone is very sturdy and feels like a tank. The sound projects out of it effortlessly, and it feels like you could just keep pushing it as loud as you want and it would never hold you back. This should be a great horn for all kinds of music, and it would cut well for funk or rock situations really well.

This is a project Conn 10M tenor needing a mechanical restoration, but it is super cheap to give someone a deal. It looks to me like it is/was original finish, but it was probably originally silver plate and the silver is stripped. Engraving looks good anyway, and the horn does not look like it has been buffed.

The main issues are that the keys need to be ‘swedged’ to compensate for mechanical play, and the horn needs new rollers and key pearls. See the many photos for details of condition, or show them to your repairman. I would guess most saxophone repairpeople would charge $900-1500 for this kind of job. Maybe your guy is a lot cheaper than that.

It came in two versions, the straight one (this one) and the one that is slightly curved (see the 62R in the museum section). Both horns have such a nice, rich tone that they are really hard to beat. Some vintage horns, like the Conn New Wonder II, Buescher True Tone, or the Martin Handcraft can compete with the 62 in the tone department, but all of these have very flexible intonation and vintage ergonomics. So if you are looking for the soprano that has it all, it is the 62. This particular horn is in mint condition. The lacquer all there, and there are no dents, dings or past repairs.
