Selmer Balanced Action Alto 1945 Fresh Overhauled Original Silver Plate Excellent Condition

Get your Paul Desmond tone going with this beautiful, freshly-overhauled, original silver plate Selmer Balanced Action alto saxophone from 1945. This is the sort of alto Desmond played on Take Five, among many other recordings, and it is the sweetest sounding Selmer alto ever made in my opinion. The ‘Balanced Action’ in the name refers to Selmers revolutionary new keywork design that came on this instrument. It probably doesn’t seem revolutionary to you, since every saxophone made today is made in imitation of Selmer’s ‘balanced action’ design!

The upshot is that you get an alto with a beautiful, warm, lyrical vintage tone, but with keywork that feels quite modern under the fingers. That’s what makes the Balanced Action model such a sweet spot for vintage Selmers. The earlier Selmers are great, but the keywork feels more antequated to many alto players, who, as a general rule, seem less interested in vintage tone unless the keywork also feels more familiar. Tenor players are in general more dedicated to tone, and will work with vintage keywork if it gets them the sound the want.

Anyway, it would be hard to find a nicer example of a Selmer Balanced action alto saxophone than this one. It has nearly all of its original silver plate intact, and it has no dents or dings, and no resolders. The bell flare, bow, neck, and body tube are clean and undamaged. The neck is particularly nice. This sax also comes with a recent overhaul done by Jack Finucane, and it feels good under the fingers, with everything nice and snappy and sealing well. You won’t have to put money into this one to get it playing well, and it won’t need more than regular maintenance to play well for a nice long time.

It even includes the BAM case in the photos, so this is really a great deal at this price. Whoever gets this horn is going to be pretty lucky I think. It’s warm and lyrical, medium spread, but with a nice, solid core tone. You can take the sound in lots of directions, from classical (Selmer’s main design idea at the time) to jazz, smooth jazz, west coast, rock, or really whatever. It’s flexible enough to work with a variety of mouthpieces and still tune well. This is a great alternative to buying some boring new horn for several reasons: better overhaul, better tone, much better resale value, better build quality, more beautiful. But mostly for the tone.

    Only one available.

Selmer Balanced Action Alto 26xxx Original and Overhauled!

Sell us a saxophone like this! Read the details here, or email us directly at [email protected] We pay the best prices for great saxophones.

There are not too many original lacquer Selmer Balanced Action’s out there anymore. Here is a structurally clean, original lacquer alto SN# 26xxx, which is the best serial range for a Balanced Action, in my experience. It has American engraving, with a beautiful cabin scene engraved on the bell. The BA tenors have gone up a lot in price in recent years, and the altos are almost sure to follow. This is what Paul Desmond played on the classic “Take Five” with an MC Gregory mouthpiece (BA + MC Gregory @small tip opening + stiff reed + lots of practice + play softly = Desmond sound!) I love the warm, sweet tone that these altos have. I play a very similar 26xxx myself, and recommend this one highly. This horn was overhaule by Matt Stohrer, and was his personal alto for a while before I snagged it from him.

This is one of the most beautiful vintage saxophones on the site right now. It is a Selmer Balanced Action alto SN# 23xxx, which is early in the (short) Balanced Action run. The Balanced Action was a leap forward in saxophone design and is really the first saxophone with what would come to be modern keywork. These horns are becoming more and more popular as people discover a tone that you cannot get anywhere else combined with this kind of keywork.

Selmer Balanced Action Alto Saxophone 21532 1935 Beautiful! Overhauled!

Beautiful example of a very early Selmer Balanced Action alto. The engraving is especially nice on this alto, as is the dark lacquer color. This has the rare individual adjuster screws on the lower stack keys, which you only see on the earliest BA’s. The Balanced Action is beloved for its warm, spread tone that has a sweet lyrical core. And for its modern keywork (all modern horns copy the Balanced Action design).

It does not have any significant past repairs. I really don’t see any. No dents, no dings, no resolders. Neck is in great shape with a little lacquer wear from use. Bell flare is undamaged. It’s quite nice. The engraving is very sharp and looks great. I don’t know for sure whether the lacquer is original, but with the engraving so sharp and the lacquer nice and dark like this, it probably is. Pricing it on the low side so someone gets a deal!

This beautiful Selmer Balanced Action Alto just got a fresh overhaul, and it plays BEAUTIFULLY! What a warm, sweet tone. Plenty of power if you push it, but mainly lyrical and balanced. Response is excellent. Low Bb is just another note. Saturated subtone ppp is no problem. Altissimo pops out easily. The pad work is super great, with a ‘dry’ feeling under the fingers that means these pad seats are wicked flat. It has the nice reusable slightly domed metal resonators that I love on Selmers. They’re very much like the vintage Tone-x resos, and you can keep them on your new pads if you swap a pad out sometime. You just get a bit more tone out of the horn with these, without changing how it was meant to sound. It’s rare to find a BA this nice, WITH a high end overhaul, and priced affordably!

There’s no better looking or sounding Selmer in my opinion. Only one available!

Selmer Balanced Action Alto Saxophone 24540 Original Lacquer Good Condition

This Selmer Balanced Action Alto Saxophone has the worn look of an old Venetian palazzo on the grand canal. Beautiful in its wear, it has been played a lot, and is ideally for a player who will play it a lot more. The lacquer (what remains) is original, though some of the engraving is worn from lots of handling on some parts of the bell. I love the look of these authentically played in vintage Selmers. Because of the wear, and some resolders, like on the bell brace and some key guards, I priced it quite a bit lower than a typical Balanced Action alto goes for. It will only keep going up in value.

I’ve said it a lot of different ways over the years, but the Balanced Action is a sweet spot for vintage Selmers, and for alto saxophones in general. It has the epoch-making keywork updates that shaped all later saxophones, and that feels natural and comfortable under the fingers. It tunes nicely on most mouthpieces (though bell keys can go sharp if you bite down too hard or have a classical setup), and above all, it has a beautiful tone. Warm, rich, medium dark, medium spread and lyrical. Fantastic!

Selmer Balanced Action Alto Saxophone Excellent Condition Original Overhauled 24352

This is a SUPER nice example of one of my favorite saxophones – the Selmer Balanced Action! This has to be one of the nicest Balanced Action altos around at the moment, as there are not many 80 year old saxophones that have original finish and still look remotely this good. If you’ve been looking for a gorgeous vintage Selmer that has a warm tone, you would be hard pressed to do better than this! The Selmer Balanced Action is the saxophone whose keywork became the basis for all modern saxophones. So if you want something that has the most warm and spread tone, but that has modern keywork, then the Balanced Action is probably your best overall option. They are sweet, lyrical players, but with the recognizable Selmer ‘French’ core tone that people look for in a Selmer as well. This is the kind of horn that makes it easy to elicit compliments from listeners on what a pleasant tone you have on sax. It’s not really a screamer or paint peeler. More of a beautiful tone than an earth shattering one. That said, you can play loudly on it as well. This Balanced Action had a recent overhaul done in California, and it feels good under the fingers on nearly new pads that are sealing well and just checked up to make sure they’re perfect. You don’t need to budget for an overhaul or any kind of restoration. Just buy it and play it. Easy! And there’s no other saxophone with more beautiful lacquer and engraving. As I write this, I can feel the urge to just keep it! But I do have to buy AND sell saxophones in order to stay in business. If your business is something else, then you should just buy this one and keep it. It will certainly continue to hold its value and go up in value over time. There are very few nicer examples of this superlative model of vintage Selmer.

Selmer Balanced Action Saxophone Fresh Overhaul Original Silver Plate Great Tone

This is an amazing, fully restored Selmer Balanced Action alto. It just got a wonderful high-end overhaul, complete with some spot plating on some keys and along the back of the body tube where the silver had begun to wear. This is one gorgeous alto, with the rare British market two-tone finish, and gold wash bell. The spring tension is on the lighter side, like with most Balanced Actions. If you want stiffer spring tension, we could discuss replacing the springs, but right now, it has a light flute-like feel like these originally had.

Tonally, If you want an alto that people are going to want to listen to, this is the one. It plays extremely well, with a warm, powerful voice that is effortlessly lyrical and makes you not want to put it down. It has high-end reusable domed brass resonators and sounds very good on them. Keywork is snappy, and ‘dry’ under the fingers, like it should be. This comes with a new BAM Softpack alto case, or you can swap that for a Cabine for +$100. These British market Balanced’s are my favorite finish on vintage Selmers, and they are few and far between.

Selmer Balanced Action Tenor 1939 Factory Relacquer Gorgeous 27227

          $ 8,750

This is an absolutely gorgeous Selmer Balanced Action tenor with an old Selmer factory relacquer job that included very little buffing. It is almost as nice as an original Balanced action, but half the price. This is the best serial range for these. There’s no dent work, no sign of significant past damage. I see a little grey something on the bell ring, but I don’t see any significant damage there either. I’ll check for minor damage to the ring when it’s overhauled and report back.

The price INCLUDES a full overhaul with Italian leather pads and nice slightly domed reusable brass resonators. Hard to imagine getting a better tenor for the money.

This is a beautiful Selmer Balanced Action tenor saxophone that was relacquered by Selmer in the 1950’s. It had Selmer pads and a few remaining Tone-x resonators on it when I got it (which means definitely factory relac), as well as the dark nitrocellulose lacquer that Selmer used on the later SBA tenors. Plus, the engraving is totally sharp and the whole thing is beautiful. Aaron Barnard just overhauled this horn with TenorMadness domed brass resos and Pisoni pads, and it is now ready to go and is a VERY good playing BA tenor.

If you are looking for a creme de la creme vintage Selmer tenor, this is it. The BA tenors between roughly 27k-30k serial are my favorite sounding vintage tenors. I play a 29k BA tenor myself, and I don’t think there is really any other saxophone vintage or modern that gives you such a uniquely beautiful, full, lush, velvety, delicately centered tone. The list of prominent players who played a BA tenor is a virtual who’s who of 40’s jazz, and with good reason. This is a rare, turn-key purchase for a world-class vintage Selmer tenor that will make even the most jaded gear heads get excited. Grab it now before it’s gone.

Selmer Balanced Action Tenor Original Lacquer Rare Sunburst American Engraving Fresh Overhaul Exceptional!

                    On hold 4/11/22

This tenor gets my rare distinction of being an ‘exceptionally fine player’, and it also is an extremely rare and fantastic example of a very early Selmer Balanced Action tenor with an American-engraving pattern that was only used for a short period on a few tenors. I think it’s really great. This horn plays basically like a Balanced Action – warm, velvety, with a lyrical core that is obviously Selmer. But it’s a little more spread and a little darker than a Late Balanced Action, almost like it’s partly Radio Improved (my favorite vintage Selmer tone) and partly BA (my second favorite vintage Selmer tone). But it has the more comfortable BA keywork layout, so it really is a special ‘unicorn’ sort of vintage Selmer that you never see. I’ve seen one other one of these ever, and I don’t think that one was original lacquer. This tenor just got a complete overhaul done through GetASax with Italian leather Pisoni pads, and the nice made in USA reusable slightly domed brass resonators that I love on these horns. You won’t find a nicer BA, and certainly not for this price. Only one available!

Selmer Balanced Action Tenor Refinished Good Condition Fresh Overhaul Excellent 29292

This is my favorite vintage of Selmer Balanced Action tenor. It just received an extremely high-end overhaul that has gotten it back to as tight and fresh feeling and playing as it can be after its first 84 years of life. That’s included in the price. It was done with Pisoni pro italian leather pads and reusable slightly domed brass resonators, that are my favorite for these. My personal 29k BA tenor has the same setup. This was a one-owner horn, unbelievably, a pro player in Florida, who took great care of it the whole time until his death. These horns will outlive all of us, if we take proper care of them.

That’s what’s just happened to this one, and it plays absolutely effortlessly, with a rich, warm, medium spread tone. The subtone is effortless, even at low volumes in the low register. It just wants to make music. The lacquer is not original, as you can tell, and there’s a patch by the thumb hook to protect the metal there from wear. Original neck is in good condition, and the horn just PLAYS! You’d pay easily double this for an original one with old pads, so relacquered with a high-end overhaul, this is a very fair price. Only one available!

This is a very nice, clean relacquered Balanced Action in the best serial range for these tenors 29xxx. It is a clean relacquer because there was not much buffing done, and the engraving is still very much like it was originally. The keywork is in good condition, and this horn plays very well with almost all new pads. It has a bigger sound than a VI, and it’s also darker and more smoky than a VI. I play a 29xxx myself, and this horn plays a lot like mine, which is saying a lot.

Selmer Cigar Cutter Super Sax Tenor Saxophone 17xxx Original Overhauled Modern Keywork!

See the full description below for more info. Here’s a 1933 Selmer Super Sax tenor with a recent overhaul, original finish, and several modifications/modernizations: a larger right hand thumbrest, a later-style geared octave mechanism with Mark VI style righward-tilting thumb key, and Balanced Action style left hand pinky table.  These modifications significantly modernize the feel of this horn, and ergonomically it feels about a generation younger than it actually is.

The modifications themselves were done quite competently, and fit and blend in well with the horn, not being noticeable upon casual inspection unless you know where to look.  The saxophone itself is in good physical condition, with moderate lacquer wear and no major past damage that I can see.

These types of modifications are not easy to do, are quite expensive, and are not often done, so it could be a good long while before you see another Super Sax with a modernized left hand pinky table.  If you’ve been interested by the big Selmer tone of the Super Sax models but are used to modern ergonomics, this could be the horn for you.

Here is a nice, clean, original lacquer Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone in my favorite serial range for *tone*. The VI altos around 95xxx-119xxx seem to have an extra resonant, powerful, dark, focused core that makes them a lot of fun to play. The intonation is good, and there are no problems there to mention, save low B and Bb being a bit flat, but only if you are using a small tip opening, classical style mouthpiece. This horn has a mix of old and new pads, and it plays great on them. You could get away with playing it like this for quite some time before getting it repadded again. There just is no other saxophone that does it all as well as a vintage VI like this, and this is a good, original example of one.

This is an interesting horn because, besides the fact that it is in like new condition, it is also one of the very first medium bow altos made. It is a 136k serial, which is as early as you see the true medium bow (which has the best intonation for low register, especially with a classical setup). There were actually long bow horns made after this batch, believe it or not. In any case, it’s a huge playing horn as well – rich, medium between bright and dark and just surprisingly lots of fun. It was so pristine that the neck cork had not even been compressed. Basically it was never played – and it turned out to be an excellent player.

This is a nice, medium bow 137xxx Selmer Mark VI alto with high F#. For those of you that need a high F# for classical repertoire, or just for convenience, this is one of the best deals on a VI you will find. It comes from my favorite serial range for the VI alto, when it had the best combination of tone and intonation etc.

If you are looking for a really good, solid VI alto with F#, of a great vintage that is also priced very reasonably, feels good, and tunes well, then this is it. There’s only one available. Get it now!

This is a very good lead alto Mark VI in that sweet spot around 140-150k serial when the altos tend to be very dependably good. It has a BIG voice and instant response. Easy altissimo, excellent intonation, including bell keys, and that medium bright, complex, sweet vintage Selmer thing going for it. Part of what makes this horn stand out is the quality of the overhaul. Steve Collins of Collins Hornworks overhauled this with nice, firm MusicMedic precision pads and the correct domed plastic resos, and it just feels great. I am *extremely* picky about this kind of thing, so that you get a quality of setup and playing condition that makes horns like this stand apart from the rest of the options out there.

This is a very nice American-assembled and engraved Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone. It has original lacquer, and it has good pads and plays very well. Some small dents were removed from the bow and body, and the low C and B key guard feet have been resoldered – just small stuff from being used, and all very minor. The neck is original and has not been pulled down or repaired. All in all, it’s a beautiful, original lacquer Selmer Mark VI in a great serial range for altos, with good pads for a very reasonable price.

This is a gorgeous American-assembled and engraved Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone. It has nearly all of its original lacquer, and it has good pads and plays very well. It has no resolders and no past damage to the neck, bell, or body tube. The neck is original, beautiful and has not been pulled down or repaired. The American-assembled VI altos in the 160k range are very good players. I know several top professional players who prefer altos in just this range. The tone is sweet, medium between bright and dark, flexible, and complex just like people want from a good Mark VI. The intonation is very good – better than most Mark VI altos, both in the palm keys and in the bell keys. If you have been looking for a realy good VI alto for a while, look no further.

This is a beautiful relacquered Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone with rose gold colored lacquer and a recent repad. It plays well with a medium-bright tone and a nice even scale cross the range. This horn has good intonation across the range as well, unlike some earlier VI altos with a different bow design. You will not lose money if you ever want to re-sell a horn like this. Modern Selmers have gotten so expensive relative to vintage ones that you can now buy a great VI like this for quite a bit less than a new “Reference 54,” only your Ref54 goes down in value and your VI goes up, and the VI is (in my opinion) still a superior instrument in terms of tone and build quality.

This gorgeous 1955 Selmer Mark VI alto has almost all of its original lacquer, and it has also just received a fresh overhaul through GetASax. The pads are Pisoni Italian leather, and the resonators are fancy slightly domed brass reusable ones that are similar in size and design to what the Selmer Mark VI originally came with. This alto has a ‘flush plug’ in the neck to close up where a mic pickup was installed. This is smooth and even inside and out, so it plays the same as if it had never happened, but there is just a little lacquer missing there. This gets you a hefty discount off of what the horn would cost if it had no repairs at all, but it doesn’t affect playability, so it’s a good way to save some money on a desirable 1955 Selmer Mark VI alto that also has a fresh overhaul with all new everything. The tone is dark, focused, powerful and projecting. It’s complex and pleasing to play, so that you don’t want to put it down. With a brighter mouthpiece, like the GS New York, or a New York Meyer, you’ll have the classic lead alto / Phil Woods style setup that will do anything you want it to do. This comes in a new BAM case as well, to complete the package. The overhaul and BAM case add a lot of value, and give you a horn that is an easy, turnkey purchase that is also easy to maintain and that will go up in value while you enjoy it.

Selmer Mark VI Alto 1955 Original Lacquer Recent Overhaul Excellent! 57457

This is a fantastic, two owner example of a Selmer Mark VI alto from the first year of production. It has a recent overhaul done through GetASax with Pisoni Italian leather pads and Tenormadness slightly domed metal resonators, which is a WONDERFUL combination for a VI alto like this. It has a powerful, projecting, focused voice, and it’s totally effortless to play. I bought this horn from the original owner, who studied in NYC with Joe Allard and played in all kinds of groups in the 50’s. The original lacquer was nearly 100% present when I bought it, but it was flaking off. We washed the horn and the flaking lacquer came off, leaving it in the present stage of elegant wear, with the bare brass darkening and the engraving set off by the contrast. It looks great, like an villa on the grand canal in Venice or something. You won’t find a nicer 5-digit to play. It’s got TONS of power and can really scream, but the core tone is medium dark, so it doesn’t get shrill even when pushed. Low register is effortless. There are no past repairs to speak of, and the overhaul is just getting settled in, so it has probably at least a decade or two of solid turn key playability in this overhaul. Whoever gets this is one lucky alto player! Only one available.

This is an amazingly awesome vintage Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone from 1958 that features all of the possible extra keywork offered by Selmer at the time. This is called a ‘conservatory model’ historically, and has the high F#, G# trill key, forked Eb, and high E trill key all included on the same instrument! This beautiful 5-digit Selmer Mark VI is very rare and super collectible.

The finish is, of course, original silver plate. The pads are sealing well as I got it, and it plays great with a medium-dark tone that is rich and almost tenor-like in the amount of power you can get. This is the ‘early medium bow’ version of the Mark VI, which means the bell keys play the best in tune of any of the 5-digit serial Selmer altos. I play a similar Mark VI to this myself. The price includes the vintage Selmer case with crushed velvet interior as well as a BAM Softpack contoured alto case for safer shipping and easier gigging. You get both!

Selmer Mark VI Alto 1960 Original Lac Fresh Overhaul! Hard to Beat 94108

This is an original lacquer Selmer Mark VI Alto from 1960 that was one owner for almost its entire life until now. It was played by a pro in FL. He had a pickup installed in the neck, which I got removed and replaced with a ‘flush plug’ meaning the brass is perfectly smooth and matching inside and out. From a playing perspective, it’s the same as if it was never there. I also got this excellent Mark VI completely overhauled.

The 90k-118k altos are my favorite Mark VI’s of all for tone. This alto has a dark, focused tenor-like tone with tons of power. It makes you want to just play and play and never put it down! With the fresh overhaul, it feels like a brand new saxophone, and plays like one too. Effortless low register, even at pianissimo; dry, snappy pad feel; slightly domed brass resonators (reusable selmer style ones that are $125 a set), italian leather Pisoni pads. It also comes in a new form-fitted BAM Classic alto case, which is designed specifically to protect the Mark VI, and which has a large external storage pocket, hard shell, and just the right kind of protective foam.

You seldom see a ‘five digit’ Selmer Mark VI alto available for this kind of price. This one is priced lower than a new Selmer, and sounds and plays better, and has a better overhaul. That’s hard to beat if you want an original lacquer Mark VI that will keep playing great for many years to come with only minimal routine maintenance and that will hold its value or appreciate over time. It’s hard to beat!

This is my personal Selmer Mark VI alto that really checks all the boxes on a desirable Mark VI. It is an 84k serial, which is probably the most desirable serial, and it has the early medium bow, for the best intonation. It has beautiful original lacquer, American-engraving, and the original neck in excellent condition with matching serial number to the body tube. It also has a recent overhaul by Matt Stohrer, who does extremely good work on these. It comes in a beautiful vintage Chesterfield case, and it also includes a BAM case for safer shipping. It’s expensive, but worth it.

This is an absolutely premium Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone with nearly all of its original lacquer intact. It even has original pads from the factory from 1962. You’d be hard-pressed to find a cleaner, more beautiful Mark VI. This has a 5-digit serial, and it is in the serial range that is my favorite for tone. These late 5-digit altos have a dark, powerful, tenor-like tone that is bigger and more complex than a typical VI. They’re among the best altos you’ll find! The ‘long bow’ tuning on this one is totally fine, with no problem on low B etc. using a Meyer.

This is a beautiful, original lacquer, American engraved Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone from 1962. It has the matching serial number on the neck, and it has no dents or dings. There are no resolders or other past repairs, save a couple of small dings removed from the back of the bow and a tiny one from the neck. The whole horn is in excellent condition, and it even still plays surprisingly well on the original factory pad job from Elkhart. They really did it right back in the day at the Selmer assembly shop. It feels just perfect under the fingers, and it would be a good feel to copy if you get this overhauled to play seriously.

Just for fun, here’s Phil Woods putting a similar VI through its paces!

The early 100k serial VI altos are my favorite Mark VI altos for tone. This is the exact same horn as a 95k serial alto, so it is the same as a 5-digit, but for a lower price. The tone is medium-dark, powerful, and punchy when pushed, with a good amount of focus. These are the most tenor-like of the Mark VI altos, with a depth and body to the sound that reminds me of a larger saxophone bursting out of an alto voice. This has the long bow, which means nothing really if you’re playing jazz, but if you’re buying this for classical sax, then with a small tip opening mouthpiece and hard reed you will find low B to be a little flat on your tuner. With a jazz setup, I don’t even notice it, and the tone that you get is just fantastic.

If you’re in the market for a great Selmer alto, this makes a much smarter purchase than a new Referene 54 at $6700, because the Reference will be worth 70% of that at best, as soon as you buy it, and less as time goes on, where a beautiful vintage Mark VI will still be worth what you paid for it or more when you go to sell it, if you ever need to. You’re tying up the money in a horn, but it’s money you can get back out, meaning you can own the horn nearly for free, or for the cost of upkeep, which is not the case buying most other sorts of big ticket items. Certainly not vehicles! Plus it’s satisfying to own and play, is built extremely well, and sounds better than a new one. Just for fun, here’s Phil Woods putting a similar VI through its paces (using a Meyer Bros NY alto piece).

One of the nicest all original VI altos you will see. This has all original pads still intact, and almost all its original lacquer. The 1964 Selmer Mark VI Altos have a big, dark, projecting, complex tenor-like tone that is my favorite tone out of all the Mark VI altos. This one had a dent removed from the back of the body tube which is now gone and didn’t leave much of a mark. Also one foot of the low C keyguard was slightly dented when I got it and I had that removed. Aside from those two small, well-done repairs, it’s in nearly new mechanical condition. Definitely a solid purchase for someone who wants a beautiful, original VI alto in superb condition with original factory setup, and for a reasonable price. Same price as a new Selmer Supreme, but this is a Mark VI!

This is a REALLY clean original lacquer, original pads Selmer Mark VI alto from 1964. Matt Stohrer uses this horn on is Stohrer Music channel to go over what an original Selmer Mark VI factory pad job and setup looks like. It’s that clean. It had one ding removed from the back of the bow, and there are no dents or dings now, and no past repairs. The neck has matching serial number and is also in excellent condition. This horn sat in the case for almost its entire life so far, as it was owned by a clarinet player who only used it occasionally. It still plays pretty well on the original pads. It has a dark, focused, powerful, tenor-like tone that only the ’63-’64 altos have, and that many Selmer aficionados have also noted about these horns. It has some interesting coloration in the lacquer just from sitting against the case and the lacquer aging differently depending upon which parts made contact with the case and which did not. If you want a time capsule Selmer Mark VI alto from one of my favorite years, that’s what this is. Only one available!

Super nice Mark VI alto original lacquer. One owner, bought from 1965, and then overhauled through GetASax to be now in TOP playing condition. You won’t find a better Mark VI alto on the market. The lacquer has some little scratches on the bell in one spot, that aren’t very noticeable. The rest of the horn is nearly new. It’s kind of amazing. One only sees a VI alto this nice a couple times a year, even at GetASax!

The overhaul feels like a brand new saxophone under the fingers, and the tone is gorgeous with a medium dark, fat, almost tenor like core. You’d be hard pressed to find a nicer VI all together.

                                            On trial Dec 12 2022

This silver 1967 Selmer Mark VI Alto is one of the better VI altos I’ve played. It’s probably the most in tune one I’ve ever played. Kind of amazing. It’s free blowing, not very resistant at all. Low notes just pop out effortlessly. High F# and altissimo are easy and in tune. The tone is powerful, medium between bright and dark, with a fat core to it and a lot of punch when pushed. It kind of vibrates under the fingers at FF like it really likes to project. I would play this as my main alto, even though I’m used to playing Kings on alto instead. This Selmer Mark VI creates the sound so easily that you can get more volume with the same amount of air, and it has a kind of projection that you rarely see in these. But there’s a fat, focused core to the tone that I really like. I’m using a GS New York, which is a fairly projecting mouthpiece, and it just sounds great.

I should mention – it has a factory narrow sliver of metal going across the neck octave pip that completely erases the hissing high A and makes it play with the same even timbre as G and B, and without going sharp as well. It looks like it’s all one piece and silver plated like the pip, with no sign of work. Horn was all original pads when I got it, and barely played. It’s kind of amazing. I was having to unlearn my normal lipping down of high A2 that I have to do on VI altos most of the time

Great deal on a beautiful, original lacquer Selmer Mark VI alto with a recent repad. You don’t need to overhaul this one! It plays well right out of the case. There are minimal past repairs, and this is a very desirable serial number as well. To me, the 160k’s are just about the best value in a Mark VI alto. They are cheaper than the 5 digit serial VI’s by a lot. But they also tune better than most 5 digit altos! They play with the warm, projecting, rich tone of a 140-149k VI, but again, without the premium price. You’re getting all the best VI features, and original lacquer, for the price of a new Reference 54. Which is great because the VI will continue to increase in value while you own and enjoy it. Plus you don’t need to sink an overhaul into this one on top of the purchase price. A good overhaul can be quite expensive. This alto plays with a medium bright, warm, moderately focused tone. It does everything well, which is, of course, why the Mark VI became so popular in the first place. It’s often imitated, but the quality, tone and satisfaction of playing the original hasn’t been matched.

This is a really nice one, and someone should grab it immediately!

This is a GREAT playing Mark VI alto that really does everything well. It just got a fresh top shelf overhaul, and it is now playing like a brand new saxophone. The pads are Italian leather Pisoni, and the resonators are nice Selmer style slightly domed reusable brass. It feels dry and snappy under the fingers and the low register up to altissimo is effortless! The later serial VI altos are probably the best deal on a Selmer, because they sell for lower prices than the early VI altos, but they have better intonation and easier low register than any other VI altos. They also have a beautiful tone that is medium between bright and dark, works with almost any mouthpiece, and can play anything from classical to rock. This one is original lacquer, with American engraving. The original lacquer is almost all intact, with just some normal wear from use. It’s a one owner horn before I got it and overhauled it for you!

It makes you want to just keep playing. You won’t want to put it down. Plus it will go up in value while you enjoy it. That’s hard to beat.

The later serial Mark VI altos like this have excellent intonation, excellent balanced medium-bright tone, and are extremely well built. This alto has nothing wrong with it, plays great, and will go up in value while you own it, but it’s about the same price as a Yamaha or even a ’boutique’ Taiwanese brand. That’s nuts! You should definitely buy it if you can. There’s nothing like a Mark VI – it has the best combination of keywork, ergonomics, build quality, and tone of any saxophone, which is why it still sets the standard for professional saxophones 50 years after Selmer stopped making them! This one also has a roomy case with plenty of storage. The lacquer has some wear, because the sax is just so fun to play. It’s in great structural condition, and the pads are newish. This is a true player’s horn with tons of projection. Spring tension is setup light, but we can stiffen it pre-shipping if you prefer.

This is a beautiful original lacquer Selmer Mark VI alto 58xxx for sale. These early VI altos are great! This sold very quickly through our curated buying service to a very happy new owner. This is a great way to get a deal on a vintage saxophone, because I often can find you a good price on a horn you are looking for.

Selmer Mark VI Alto 59680 1955 Fresh High End Overhaul! Great Deal

Unengraved Euro-assembled Mark VI alto from 1955 that just got a full high-end overhaul. Is the lacquer original or not? I’m honestly not sure. It’s priced like a relacquer, but it may well be original. The lacquer is the correct color and style for an early 50’s Euro, and since there’s no engraving, and nowhere where you can see wear underneath lacquer, it’s a tough call. This just got a complete restoration, meaning the keywork is super snappy and tight feeling, and everything is clean and just how it should be for this horn’s next couple of decades of playing. The lacquer on the original neck was kind of ugly, so we went ahead and stripped the rest of that off and let it age to a natural patina. If you want a dark, focused, powerful Mark VI alto that is a 5-digit serial for the price of a much less desirable VI, then this is for you. It may well be original, but I’m not going to ask +$3000 for it just in case it isn’t. So it’s a great deal too, in my opinion. I threw in a new BAM Cabine alto case for good measure. This is a superb choice for a serious player, or for a student, or for a novice who wants a horn that will be reliable and sound great, to grow into. Only one available!

Selmer Mark VI Alto 69479 Original Lacquer No Neck Serial

Beautiful example of an early 5-digit Selmer Mark VI Alto saxophone with original lacquer and American engraving. The neck on this one has no serial number and has the thicker ‘ferrule’ above the tenon, which you see around 76xxx on some VI altos, so I bet the original owner swapped out the original neck for this new neck that appeared in 1958, and was available into the early 60’s. I’ll update the description with more info soon.

This is a beautiful Selmer Mark VI alto in excellent condition that sold through our “find me a sax” wait list before it was listed. I’m posting photos just so it’s in the archive. This alto came to me in nearly new condition with original pads intact. It got a nice overhaul by Matt Stohrer, and went to a new owner in a new BAM Cabine case, which is the ideal case for packing your alto around. It turned out really great, and is tons of fun to play.

Selmer Mark VI Alto 82xxx from 1959 Near Mint Silver

Behold: the mythical 80k alto in nearly new condition. [hushed silence] This original silver plate Mark VI alto SN#82xxx is about as close to buying a new Mark VI in 1959 as you are likely to find. This horn was assembled in France, and has not been played much since it was new. There are no dents or dings, no past repairs, except for one key guard foot on low Bb. The (doubtless original) neck, body tube, bow and bell all look great. The small amount of tarnish in the silver will of course wipe off easily. The pads look good, though it has not just been freshly overhauled. It’s on consignment, and it looks like the owner got it repadded and didn’t play it much. It still plays quite well, with a medium dark, focused, punchy tone. It has the medium bow length for better bell key intonation.

If you’ve been looking for a beautiful, collectible, and great playing premium vintage alto, this would be hard to beat.

Selmer Mark VI Alto 88079 1960 Silver Plate Very Good Condition Great Deal

This is a well cared-for Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone from 1960 that has the high F# key and silver plate. The silver plate finish is aftermarket, done so that this would match the other instruments in a military band. It doesn’t look like it was relacquered or buffed significantly as part of that process. Probably just chemically stripped and then plated. It currently has older pads that are still sealing fairly well. It has the original neck with matching serial number. It’s american-engraved, in case you were wondering. Plan on a repad before too long. You would be hard pressed to find a nicer Mark VI for this price. The 80k serials are just about the most desirable version, and they are often priced much higher. Plus you get the high F #, which is a big bonus for many players today.
