Selmer Reference 36 Tenor Saxophone Mint + Overhauled! BAM / Selmer Case Great Deal 635957
Freshly overhauled and fantastic!
I think that the Reference 36 is the best sounding tenor saxophone that Selmer currently makes. The problem is, hardly anyone gets to experience this, because they come with a poor factory setup. To put it bluntly, new $9000+ Reference 36 tenors tend to need an overhaul even when they are brand new from the factory. They come with several factory setup problems that can only be really solved if you completely redo the overhaul. (They lack real, careful factory pad work, and the thin pads cannot be easily adjusted after the fact either.)
So I just dropped a full overhaul into this mint, nearly new condition tenor so that it will be head and shoulders better than any brand new Reference 36 tenor out there. The pads are now infintely better setup, will hold up way better over time, the neck fit is better, the feel is better, the tone is incredibly better. The result, after spending over $1000 overhauling a nearly new horn is *amazing*. I have been playing this horn for like two hours. Can’t put it down.
It makes the horn how it should have been in the first place, which is a truly superb tenor. Not exaggerating here. If you’ve been wanting the full experience – rich, full Selmer tone with pad work that makes the horn effortless to play – saturated pianissimo low register notes, fat high notes, perfect tuning – great pad feel – snappy and dry under the fingers – basically as good a tenor as you could buy new today, well, there’s just this one available in the world, as far as I know.
The description: Here is a mint condition Selmer Reference 36 tenor saxophone with its original BAM case. Â This horn is cosmetically looks just about perfect. Here is a great chance to own a nearly-new Selmer tenor at thousands off the new price that is better than new in every way.
Once overhauled, these horns have a warm, rich tone reminiscent of the Balanced Action, but they have a lot of their own thing too. Intonation is great, and that ‘lyrical’ focused Selmer core is there. Ergonomics are super great, as you might expect from a new Selmer. If you’ve been looking for a modern Selmer tenor, you would be hard pressed to find a better deal than this one.

It comes the original BAM Selmer case. This horn is in beautiful shape with gorgeous engraving and lacquer, and the tone really is reminiscent of the Mark VI vibe. Intonation and ergonomics are modern and better than a VI, so it’s a great horn for a whole range of people interested in a pro alto. There’s a good reason that these horns are so popular! They have the best tone of any of the modern Selmers (in my opinion).

Selmer Reference 54 Alto Near Mint Great Deal! 66xxx 2005
Near mint example of a Selmer Reference 54 alto. It has been played a little but not much, and is an enormously better deal than buying a new one. These are the best sounding modern Selmers in my opinion, and actually do play similarly to a vintage Selmer, but with more modern ergonomics. Includes the original case as well. Only one available.

Selmer Reference 54 Alto Saxophone 564266
This is a great playing Selmer Reference 54 Alto overhauled not too long ago by Ken Beason. If you’ve read around on this site much, you’ll know that I think almost any modern Selmer needs a full repad, at the least, if it’s going to play up to its potential. This one got a complete overhaul of everything, which is the best case scenario. You can buy a new Ref 54 for way more money, and it won’t play this well either right out of the case, or especially a few months later after the factory pad job starts to fall apart on you in a hundred little ways. Harsh, I know, but that’s why used modern Selmers tend to sell so much lower than new ones. However, once you fix everything on one of these, they are EXCELLENT instruments. They’re built to play GREAT, but just need to be setup to play their best after the fact.
So that’s what you’re getting. Ken Beason is an experienced saxophone repairman and designer, with a great reputation. He makes his own large slightly domed resonators, which is what you get on this instrument. They’re a lot like vintage Selmer resonators, but they give you a bit more punch and volume out of the horn.
The Reference 54 is my favorite modern Selmer without any question. It’s the only alto Selmer currently makes that tunes easily with a Meyer or other typical jazz mouthpiece. The Series II’s and III’s can be quite frustrating in the mouthpiece department. The Ref 54 is billed as inspired by the Mark VI. It plays beautifully, with a lyrical French core like a good Mark VI, but with a tone that is its own thing. Warm, rich, and full. Tuning is excellent. Ergonomics are hard to beat on any saxophone. It’s well worth the money at this price. This example has some lacquer wear on the neck from use. If that bothers you, you can swap out the neck for a few hundred dollars, and it will look new again, and then sell the old neck for not much less! But it plays great with this neck and this setup, so I’m not messing with success.

Selmer Reference 54 Alto Saxophone Excellent Condition Great Deal! 759265
This is one sweet Reference 54 alto! It has been completely cleand and tuned up and plays really well. Pro-owned and well cared for, it looks nearly new aside from a little lacquer wear on a couple of keys. There are no dents, no dings, no past repairs, and the engraving and lacquer look really beautiful. I’m including a new BAM case with this horn to keep it safe. It’s the same kind of BAM that Selmer sells with the Reference 54, so it makes sense to put it in this case.
If you want a modern Selmer, this is the one to get. The Series II and III are good for classical, but for anything else, they can be mouthpiece picky. The Reference 54 is it’s own thing – it works with Meyers and a wide range of other mouthpieces. It responds with more warmth and complexity than the clear, round Series II and III’s. It is nice and snappy and ‘dry’ under the fingers, and the pads are all sealing well and just thoroughly gone through by my excellent repairman. Plus, by buying a really clean used Ref 54, you get a horn that will hold its value excellently, which is the main consideration NOT to buy a new Reference 54. But a clean, beautiful, great-playing used one is a smart buy. There isn’t a more beautiful or better sounding modern Selmer.

Selmer Reference 54 Alto Saxophone Near Mint Condition Full Setup!
Absolutely the best Reference 54 alto on the market right now. This horn is almost mint condition, plus I just dropped the equivalent of an overhaul into it so that you get to play it how it was meant to sound. As you know from reading around on this site, the Reference horns are great, IF you fix all the weird choices that Selmer makes in the factory setup. This horn just had that done, to my picky standards, and now it rocks.
What was done? Full disassembly, remove every pad, add lots of shellac behind the pads so that they seal well and will seal well for a long time, clean, change the oil, adjust key heights, swap out many of the adjustment materials for better ones/correct ones, and do a full ‘neck fit’ which means laboriously making the neck/body joint seal perfectly all around. Once you fix all that stuff, these are just about the best modern do-it-all altos on the market. Warmer and richer than the Series II and III, and compatible with jazz mouthpieces (Series II and III seem not to like non-Selmer mouthpieces in many cases). Excellent keywork, comfortable ergonomics, fast response, free blowing feel, and great intonation. You could get a slightly cheaper, more worn Ref 54 on eBay or whatever, but then you’d need someone picky to go completely through it to get the full experience, which is expensive, and not even that likely to go right unless your repairman is willing to do all that stuff to a modern horn that already ‘plays ok’ as is. But it’s worth it! Check out the Reference 36 in the tenors section, which has also just been rebuilt, or the Series II alto just below that had a full overhaul and is also glorious.
Plus this particular horn got a rich, dark lacquer that I have rarely seen on a modern Selmer. I don’t know whether it was a special order or what, but it’s really nice and dark, almost like a 50’s Mark VI.

Selmer Reference 54 Tenor Saxophone
This saxophone is sold!  But click here to see our current selection of tenor saxophones. This is a matte finish Selmer Reference 54 tenor saxophone. These horns come from the factory needing a thorough setup, so when this horn came in, I had to get almost all of the sprung-open pads replaced (and a few others I believe). Good news is that Matt Stohrer did that work, and it now plays and feels better than a new one. His pad work is really precise and snappy, feels great under the fingers, and lasts for a long time. If you’re looking for a good used Ref 54, this is an excellent option.

Selmer SBA Alto Saxophone from 1953 Near Mint w/ Bill Singer Overhaul
This is as close to a new Selmer Super Balanced Action alto saxophone as you are going to find. This thing is amazing. it came with all original pads, and then it got a full overhaul done by the great Bill Singer in NYC. Bill needs no introduction, but for you international buyers, he works on David Sanborn’s altos among many other saxophone greats. The original metal Tonex resonators were saved and reused on the new pads. This thing feels just like the excellent original Selmer factory setup, only all new. So it really is as good as going back in time and buying a new SBA.
There are no past repairs, no dents, no dings. No neck damage, bell flare and bow are perfect. The original neck has the matching serial number to the body. The only wear at all is some extremely light scratching on the back of the body tube.
As a player, this alto is extremely good. It has both the warmth and beauty of an early Mark VI, and the power and projection of a later VI alto. Great intonation, great ergonomics, beauty, dark honey original lacquer. Gorgeous original Chesterfield case with case cover. You really can’t beat this alto if you want something that does it all. Already expertly restored completely and ready to go for a long long time. Super Balanced Action Alto saxophones are going up, and this is one of the best in the world.

Selmer SBA Alto Saxophone Original Lacquer from 1946 Fresh Overhaul! Super Balanced Action
This is a gorgeous original lacquer Selmer SBA Alto Saxophone American engraved and assembled, that is in excellent physical condition AND has a fresh, full overhaul. This horn plays really well, with a lush, wide tone that is medium dark and smooth. The keywork feels great under the fingers – nice and snappy. It has a top quality overhaul, which is very important on a horn like this, and has slightly domed metal resonators, which are similar to the original equipment for an SBA of this vintage.
The neck is in excellent condition, body tube, bell flare, and bow are all undamaged. The engraving on this alto is particularly nice, and the exposed part of the brass is developing a beautiful matte patina that accentuates the engraving. This is a horn that looks even better in person than in the photos. It comes from a lifelong saxophone player whose baritone and tenor were also stand out players. He really had three excellent saxophones and this one is no exception.
From a player’s perspective, you get the warmth and complexity of a Balanced Action here with slightly more comfortable keywork (offset stack keys so your wrists are more relaxed compared to BA). Plenty of volume, nice easy, saturated low register, even at very low volumes. Easy subtone. Easy altissimo. Feels like a new horn under the fingers but is better built and sounds better. The price includes a new BAM Classic alto saxophone case at no extra charge.

Selmer SBA Super Balanced Action Alto 41532 Relacquered Plays Great
This was the main alto of a top level gigging musician who just retired from playing after 50 years or so. He went through a lot of horns over the years, and all of the ones he ended up with are excellent! This was the alto that won the decades-long shootout for best alto. It’s a Selmer Paris ‘Super (Balanced) Action’ (SBA) Alto saxophone made in 1950, which many consider to be the most desirable year for SBA’s (though they are all desirable)! Coltrane played a tenor of this, which probably helps them have a bit of a value bump.
This alto has a sweet, lyrical, moderately focused tone that is warm and medium between bright and dark. The ‘French lyrical core’ to the tone is what I love most about it. It’s challenging to describe tone, but there’s a central, complex thread to the sound that you can easily latch onto that makes these really pleasant to listen to, whether that’s blending with a section, or playing solo. The build quality is of course excellent, and the feel under the fingers is nice and snappy. This sax got a ‘new coat of paint’ along the way at some point – probably in the late 50’s by the lacquer color, and probably by the Selmer factory in Elkhart (same reason), who would frequently overhaul and strip and respray the lacquer at the same time for their customers. It doesn’t really affect anything tonally. But it makes the horn a lot less expensive for you! So if you’re looking for a really nice, clean, beautiful vintage Selmer Paris alto that is better built than anything you can buy today, AND that plays beautifully, has good pads, and will go up in value — and all that for around the price of a new Yamaha, that’s what you’re getting! And this is a particularly good one, as mentioned above.
Only one available.

Selmer SBA Super Balanced Action Alto Saxophone Original Lacquer 1953 53069 Excellent!
This is as close to a new Selmer Super Balanced Action alto saxophone as you are going to find. This thing is amazing. it comes with all original pads, and the original metal Tonex resonators are all still present on the original pads from 1953. The excellent original Selmer factory setup feels great under the fingers. If you are going to play this seriously, you will probably want to get either all new pads (reuse the original resonators) or at least replace some pads. But it does still play surprisingly well on the current 66 year old pads. It has a sweet, warm voice with plenty of power. A bit more spread and warm than a typical 50’s Mark VI would be. Darker than any modern Selmer, but with a nice focused lyrical core to the tone. There’s that delicate thread in the center of the sound that you can grab onto with vintage Selmers that makes them especially pleasant to listen to.
There are no past repairs, no dents, no dings. No neck damage, bell flare and bow are perfect. The original neck has the matching serial number to the body. The only wear at all is some extremely light scratching on the back of the body tube.

Selmer SBA Tenor Original Silver Plate Excellent Condition Overhauled
This is a gorgeous Chris Potter/ Joshua Redman serial Selmer SBA Tenor in original silver plate. Nearly all of the original silver plate is still intact. This amazing Super Balanced Action tenor just got a full overhaul in Paris followed by a thorough, full day setup here to get it just how I like. It plays its absolute best now, and is effortless in all registers. As with all of these, the low C-Bb are a bit sharp, so you lip them down a little. I am used to this from playing my RI’s and BA’s and it’s no big deal. Â This SBA feels like a brand new saxophone under the fingers, and it looks even more beautiful in person than in the pictures. I’m selling this in a brand new BAM Cabine tenor case in silver, which really sets off the look of the horn, and represents about a $400+ added value included in the price. You’d be hard pressed to find a nicer, cleaner, better playing example of an early SBA. It will also go up in value while you own it. I wouldn’t be surprised if it went up quite a bit, because this is definitely one of the best examples of this type of SBA tenor in existence.

Selmer SBA Tenor Saxophone 47xxx Original Silver Great Player Super Balanced Action
Getting overhauled now! Here is a gorgeous Selmer Super Balanced Action tenor, built in 1952.  It has its original silver plated finish, and it is in very good condition.  The Selmer Super Balanced Action tenor is among the most desirable tenor saxophones ever. And for good reason. It’s the horn Coltrane famously played for many years (up until around 1965), and the horn Branford Marsalis and many others play today. It has the classic Selmer tone that, whether you know it or not, is already in your ears from all those classic Blue Note era recordings. Hank Mobley on Soul Station is one for me among many others.  Point being, if you’ve heard a saxophone on a famous recording, you’ve likely heard one of these. And that is no accident- these saxophones are sublime.
This beautiful SBA tenor is getting a complete overhaul right now, reusing the original resonators if possible, or using TenorMadness domed brass reusable resonators if necessary. It already plays very well, with the broad and rich Selmer tone that these are so known for. The only damage is a scratch inside the bell flare, probably from a clip on microphone. The bell flare is just a little uneven in that spot when you look at the light reflecting on it. Super minor, but I’d rather you are pleasantly surprised by the horn’s beauty than disappointed at a flaw you didn’t notice.
The keywork is comfortable and intuitive, owing to the underlying design started with the Balanced Action and honed with the Super Balanced Action that was so inspired it remains the basic template for all saxophones made to this day. Â The intonation is excellent (this is one of the later long bell tenors- the early short bell tenors are known for needing a bit of extra attention to low note intonation) and the response is quick and lively, and as the best Selmers do it lends itself easily to any style of music- which is one of the things that sets Selmers apart from the rest. Â It is an ability that is in my experience rare among saxophones, and nobody does it better than Selmer.

Selmer Series II Alto 403860 Great Playing Condition Great Deal!
This is a great deal Selmer Paris Series II alto with great pads. It has some lacquer wear, from being played a good amount. Unsurprisingly, that’s because it plays really well. Setup is great, response is great. The low register pops right out no problem. Intonation is great, as you expect with one of these, designed and built for classical saxophone literature.
Compared to buying a new Selmer Series II, this is much better, because it is less than half the price, plus it has better pad work and setup. No past repairs that I see anywhere. And it’s all cleaned, oiled, and feeling dry and snappy under the fingers. If you want to get a great alto that you never have to upgrade, but your budget is on the lower side for a pro sax (relatively speaking), this is hard to beat.

The earlier Series II’s are the most desirable, and this one is a 400k serial so it’s in the prime range. It is also in near mint condition. Whoever gets this horn is going to love it. Why pay 66% more than this for a new Selmer alto when you can get a used one in like new condition, and it will probably play better anyway?!Â

Selmer Series III Alto Saxophone SOLID Sterling SILVER Near Mint w/ Full Overhaul
Just freshly overhauled!! This alto has the distinction of being the best playing classical alto saxophone that I have played. Ever.
If you are not used to used saxophones, that means someone with a bunch of years of training in the craft of saxophone repair is going to be spending somewhere around 25-30 hours of skilled labor on this saxophone to make it totally fresh and new (better than new). It costs somewhere around $1000-1500 to have done. It will play so much better than any other Series III you might find for sale that you will be surprised that they are even the same model of saxophone. Not kidding.
If you play classical alto and you want to play the best, and set yourself apart tonally from the crowd, this is your dream alto. There really is nothing like it. I try to avoid overusing superlatives in saxophone descriptions, but this horn deserves them. The tone is dark and centered, and it has a haunting quality that is extra special among saxophones. This is the alto for a serious alto player who wants something that is built for saxophone study and performance. These are especially nice for classical playing. Doug O’Connor’s tone on one of these has left a lasting impression on me. Just gorgeous. I recently got to hear Doug play the Bach Chaconne on this alto, among other pieces, and I have to say, it was a high point for me in experiencing transcendent music on the saxophone.
There’s no damage, no wear, no past repairs. This horn has not been played much since new, and it’s in near mint condition. The neck is great. The whole horn tunes well with a classical setup. You can buy one of these new for $18329 online, or you can get this one OVERHAULED!  for right around half price here. It’s a great investment if you are wanting the best.
Original case, fresh overhaul, and the original S80 mouthpiece is included also.

Selmer Series III Alto Saxophone 618xxx Near Mint
This saxophone is sold! Â But click HERE to see our current selection of alto saxophones. This is a very clean example of a modern Selmer Series III alto. It has a little spot of lacquer wear on the neck, and that’s pretty much it for cosmetics. Structurally, the horn is also basically near mint and undamaged. The neck, body, bow, and bell all look great. This horn also has good pads. It was a one owner horn, and the guy took it in for a tune up every 6 months. This should be an easy, turn key purchase for someone. It will save you lots of money over a new horn, and since saxophones don’t really wear out, a nice used one is just as good as (or better than) a new one.

Selmer Series III Alto Saxophone Black Lacquer
This saxophone is sold!  But click HERE to see our current selection of alto saxophones. The retail prices of Selmer Series III alto saxes just went up in July by about $500. That makes a virtually mint condition used horn an even better choice than it was before. This horn comes from its original owner having been played only at home. He took excellent care of it, so that there is hardly a scratch on the whole horn. There have been no dents, dings or past repairs at all. The black and gold looks really great and it seems to give the sound of the horn a bit more guts. It is slightly darker in tone than the lacquered Series III currently in the shop. So you are getting a like-new horn cosmetically, which is (far) better than new mechanically. That’s hard to beat, for half the price of a new one.

Selmer Series III Soprano Saxophone Near Mint!
This is a gorgeous, near mint example of a Selmer Paris Series III soprano saxophone. It just got tuned up, and it plays as well as any new Series III, if not better. It tunes beautifully, and the tone is centered, lyrical, and refined. You can play jazz on it, but Selmer designs this to be a classical soprano. It likes to have a Selmer mouthpiece – either an S80 or a Concept. I have a very nice Concept that I can include with the instrument for a big discount if you need a mouthpiece. The keywork feels great, and everything is just nice. So if you want a soprano you can just pick up and play, that is world class and can accomplish whatever you can think of, then check this one! It’s over $2000 off the new price, and it has hardly been played at all since new. Probably has been played less than some new instruments sitting in stores right now! Only one available!

Selmer Super / Adolphe Sax Alto Saxophone 769 Fresh Overhaul!
Are you the ultimate saxophone hipster. (jk) The sort of snob who likes to have a saxophone nobody else can imitate? Here’s an alto you might want in that case. Or if you just love vintage Selmers and want one that both plays extremely well and has some history. This plays wider and wilder than a modern Selmer or than a VI. It is sort of half Conn in how it feels to play these early Selmers before they changed the bore.
This is basically a Selmer Super Sax from the 1930’s, but with a bell and a few other parts made by the Adolphe Sax company. Selmer used these parts on a small batch of excellent saxophones in the 30’s after it bought the Adolphe Sax company and all its inventory. These special saxophones play like a Selmer Super Sax or Radio Improved, but the bell says Adolphe Sax on it. The body tubes have the normal Selmer ‘body numbers’ for a Super sax, and the keywork is Super as well. This alto just received a complete high end restoration, and it looks gorgeous all polished up and repadded.
I’m really excited about it. The Selmer Adolphe baritone I had was extremely good, and went to a collector who absolutely loves how it plays. This alto is even better. The Super Sax ‘cigar cutter’ altos are among my favorite of all vintage altos, and this is basically one of those in terms of tone and design, but also sports the Adolphe Sax name! You can’t beat that.
Definitely only one available!!

Selmer Super / New Large Bore Tenor Saxophone 13xxx
This saxophone is sold! Â But click here to see our current selection of tenor saxophones. This horn is in great shape with new pads and a warm vintage Selmer tone. This horn’s serial number falls just before the Super Sax was introduced, late in the large bore range. It has a warm spread tone and it is lots of fun to play – lots of resonance in the body tube and the good ergonomics that would set Selmer apart for years to come. This looks like a really old relacquer to me. I don’t see any signs of buffing, but the lacquer just looks a little too good overall. I’m guessing that it was relacquered in the 1940’s at the Selmer factory and not played much since that time. With a fresh repad, this horn is ready to go for many years to come. It ships in the original case which is still in good condition after all this time. There are not too many of these old birds around, and certainly not in this condition.Â

Selmer Super Action 80 Alto Saxophone
This saxophone is sold! Â But click HERE to see our current selection of alto saxophones. This is a nice example of a Selmer SA80 Series I alto. These horns have a dark, round, complex tone reminiscent of an early Mark VI (80xxx-90xxx vibe) but with better ergonomics. I’m not saying it’s a Mark VI, but in terms of tone pallet it’s pretty similar. I just did a side by side comparison with an 86xxx just to make sure. This horn is of course original lacquer. It has had a crease removed from one part of the bell flare, and there were some small dents removed from the back of the bottom bow. Nothing major, and it is hard to tell now because the work was done so well.

Selmer Super Action 80 Series 1 Alto Mint Condition + Freshly Overhauled 333879
Selmer Paris Super Action 80 Series 1 gets my full endorsement. It’s the best built modern Selmer (before the cost-cutting measures of the late 80’s). It has the most beautiful, dark, complex, focused tone of all the Selmers, and with a classical mouthpiece sounds gorgeous. With a bright mouthpiece, people use these for everything from smooth jazz to big band. It doesn’t get as much credit these days because Selmer is always touting its latest model as the best saxophone ever, despite also constantly cheapening its build and cutting more corners.Anyway this one is basically mint, with a really cool original case, AND I just sank a full overhaul into it rather than sell it on the dried out, 40 year old, unplayed original pads. So it’s better than new and plays super great. You won’t find a nicer modern alto in better playing condition that checks all the boxes for less, I don’t think. -

Selmer Super Action 80 Series 1 Alto Saxophone
This saxophone is sold!  But click HERE to see our current selection of alto saxophones. This is an excellent condition Selmer Super Action 80 Alto Saxophone. This horn is a Series 1, which has a darker, more complex tone than the Series II’s and III’s do. The Series I’s also have great build quality, employing real pivot screws (not spring loaded ones like the more recent Selmers). It plays GREAT and feels really good under the fingers. The great thing about these horns is that the dark core tone is ideal for serious saxophone study/lessons/college and also combines well with a brighter jazz mouthpiece to give you a nice jazz tone as well. If I were buying a modern Selmer alto, I would buy a nice Series I like this over the others, for all of the above reasons.

Selmer Super Action 80 Series 1 Soprano 349xxx Repadded
This saxophone is sold!  But click here to see our current selection of soprano and sopranino saxophones!Of modern Selmer sopranos, the one with the best and most durable build quality is the Series 1. It is all metal and has better construction and key fitting than later Selmers. This means better playability and consistency and less maintenance needed over time. Another reason to buy one of these is that it has the best tone of any Selmer soprano, to my ear, at least. It is a definite departure from the more tinny-tending Mark VI soprano design, and it is darker and fatter sounding than the later Series II or III horns. You get a fairly dark, complex, round tone with some complexity to it, and that is fairly desirable on soprano. This is an easy, turn-key purchase for a beautiful professional Selmer soprano saxophone.

Selmer Super Action 80 Series 1 Tenor 347xxx Fresh Overhaul!
This saxophone is sold! Â But click here to see our current selection of tenor saxophones. If you want a Selmer Paris tenor that is both built to higher standards than the new Selmers, and that costs half as much as a new one, then this may be the horn for you. The new Selmers are selling over $8k now, which makes used ones kind of an obvious choice. The Super Action 80 Series 1 tenors were probably the best built modern Selmers, with Paris-made keywork, metal pivot screws, and generally reliable construction throughout. These horns don’t wear out over time.
It’s also a versatile horn. You can sound really good playing classical on it because of the dark, round core. But you can also wail playing R&B or jazz with a higher baffle mouthpiece like a Freddie Gregory, Lamberson, or an EB Otto Link.
For the total package of tone, playing condition, Selmer name and build, this is a very good value. There’s only one available! Get it now, before it’s gone!

Selmer Super Action 80 Series 1 Tenor Excellent condition
These Selmer Series I tenors are beasts in the playing department. They have a much darker, more focused core to the tone than the Series II or III tenors. Of Selmers, the tone is most similar to an early Mark VI – dark, punchy, complex, with a bit of an edge if you push it. It’s a little clearer and rounder than my 81k tenor. I did a side-by-side comparison with my 81k VI just to make sure. One advantage is that this Series I tenor has more modern ergonomics, so the palm keys and side keys are a bit more comfortable than on a VI. It’s also a versatile horn. You can sound really good playing classical on it because of the dark, round core. But you can also wail playing R&B or jazz with a higher baffle mouthpiece like a Freddie Gregory, Lamberson, or an EB Otto Link.

Selmer Super Action 80 Series 1 Tenor Recent Overhaul 337710
The Selmer Series 1 tenor has the best build quality of any modern Selmer. It has normal pivot screws and is easy to work on and adjust. It also has better pad geometry and lacks the cost-cutting measures that Selmer put into place starting with the Series II and getting more pronounced up to the present.
It also has arguably the best tone for a lot of players of any modern Selmer. The tone is dark, powerful, and focused, and very ‘Selmer-y’ of course. Meaning, it’s not dark and fat and punchy like a Keilwerth, and it’s not dark and velvety and spread like a Conn, or dark and loud and raucous like a King Zephyr Special. It’s dark and centered and focused and under control, with good intonation and precise scale and definition between notes. It works fine with a range of mouthpieces, unlike a Series II or III which tend to be more mouthpiece-picky. You can play jazz, rock, and commercial music (even, gasp, smooth jazz) on a Series 1 and sound great. I know a lot of folks who pair them with a high baffle piece and use them for smooth jazz and rock and sound great. Crisp, projecting, but still fat in the upper register.
This one is in nice shape and plays well on the recent overhaul, done for the owner (it’s on consignment) by Peter Lamb at Flying Squirrel Music in Raleigh NC.

Selmer Super Action 80 Series II Alto 538xxx Silver Overhauled!
This saxophone is sold!  But click HERE to see our current selection of alto saxophones. This is a gorgeous original silver Selmer Series II alto in excellent, near mint condition. It is mechanically in better than new shape, because it has had a full overhaul and then a thorough, recent setup by Ken Beason. This particular horn is probably the most responsive Series II that I have played. It has a big voice and can easily cover a wide dynamic range. The tone is classic Series II, which means fairly clear and round, medium between bright and dark, with a delicate “French” core to it. It is just a really clean, exceptionally good-playing (and notice that I don’t say that about every single horn on the site), and beautiful Series II alto that has already had its factory pads replaced and has a world-class setup. Ideally, someone who is in the market for a new Series II will get smart and buy this instead. It comes in the original case in excellent condition, by the way.

Save thousands of dollars getting this beautiful condition used Selmer Series II alto. This instrument has very little wear, and comes to you in excellent condition. It just got several new pads and a thorough setup, so it is playing very well and effortlessly throughout. As I’m sure you know, the Series II is the standard, go-to alto saxophone for serious saxophone study. You never need to upgrade it, and you can take it to college for saxophone study and it will be in good company there with a lot of other Series II’s and III’s. The tone is balanced, warm, clear and round, with a lyrical core tone and very good intonation. The Series II likes to have a classical style or concert mouthpiece like a Selmer S80 C* or D, or a Selmer Concept etc. Lots of other mouthpieces work, but if you’re not sure what to get, then get one of those two.

Selmer Super Action 80 Series II Tenor Like New Overhauled 2 Necks! 435k
This is a mint, like new Selmer Series II tenor that just got a full high end overhaul through GetASax. It has the extra neck octave pip/’harmonic key’ for easier altissimo, and it WORKS! It also comes with a second, silver plated Series II neck if you want to compare and contrast. This horn came new in the plastic, but it’s a 435k serial, so that’s why I went ahead and completely overhauled it. The dry, thin original Selmer pads were going to give you a lackluster playing experience, and I felt like it really deserved the full treatment. If you’ve been wanting a Series II tenor with all the bells and whistles, that responds better than new, and that will hold up better than a new one, this is it! Plus the harmonic key really is a useful feature. I’m impressed!
