I always tell people that if you want the modern professional alto sax with the best sound and best price, you should get an 82z. This horn has a medium bright tone with enough character to make it an excellent horn for jazz, but it also has a clear enough tone and great intonation so that it is a popular choice for classical and ensemble playing. It’s the best do-it-all horn available today.

The Yamaha 82z is a great professional alto sax from Yamaha. It has great intonation, excellent ergonomics, and a flexible tone that works well for all kinds of playing. This horn is in great cosmetic shape with only light play wear. It has all new pads just put in by Matt Stohrer, who is one of the best in the business, so the pad work is actually better than new.

This is an excellent condition, factory unlacquered Yamaha 82z tenor. It is in totally clean condition with no past damage and no past repairs. It has the original pads, which are in medium condition, between old and new. Let me know if you want to get this horn with all new pads, just to get everything in the best condition that it can be. For now, it’s like any other 82z tenor that you would find used, with the factory yamaha pads. It plays with a medium bright, modern tone (which is fairly clear/clean with a punchy edge). This horn ships in the original case also in great condition.

Here’s a chance to get a like new 82ZRS for quite a bit less than a new one, but still in mint condition, or even better, because it has already been looked at by a tech to check out the factory setup. This horn has been played very little, and is as close to new condition as you would ever find a used saxophone. This is one of those horns that soprano players dream of – the one piece, bent neck Yamaha 82ZR. This horn is based on Yamaha’s epic 62R soprano and seems to be very similar to a 62R once it is properly setup. This particular horn is silver-plated. Silver plated 62R sopranos tend to be the most desirable type, either because of the rarity or because some players think they sound different.

Here’s a nice, dependable alto saxophone from Yamaha. This is the same type of alto that I first got when I was in school band, (also used) and it served me well. Actually, the students playing Yamahas tended to end up in first chair more often than their colleagues who had brand new saxophones of other makes, becausethe Yamaha is just better made, sounds better, holds up better, and needs less maintenance than other entry-level saxophones. It plays better than many other saxophones billed as “intermediate/professional” in fact.

Here’s an early Yamaha 475 alto, which is actually a surprisingly good alto. It looks like it was made with the tooling for the original version of the professional Yamaha purple logo 62, so it’s a good deal for the money. Because it’s a Yamaha – it comes apart and goes back together easily, the keywork is modern and has no surprises, it’s well made etc. This would be perfect for someone who doubles on alto, needs a gigging alto, or a student who needs a good alto to grow into, but who has a tight budget. As long as you have a local music store to put some pads in, you can get a good horn for a great price that should serve you well for years.

This is nice condition Yamaha 62 alto. This is the 62 that comes between the purple label horns and the later 62-II, and it has its original neck as well. This horn is in excellent playing condition and comes in a new ProTec gig bag. The lacquer is in good shape with only minor scratching from use. The tone on this horn is clear, round, and medium bright, with quite a bit of flexibility based on which mouthpiece you choose. It would be an ideal choice for a serious student, school band, lessons, college study, or with a more aggressive mouthpiece, a louder band/jazz/rock/R&B setting.

If you follow this site much, you will know that I think that the best-sounding modern altos are the 80’s Yamaha 62 and the 80’s Yanagisawa 880. These horns combine modern keywork, ergonomics, and intonation with a warmer, more interesting basic tone than has become the recent trend among major manufacturers. There are, thankfully, lots of good horns made today, and mouthpiece choice makes a huge difference to the tone that you get, so there are lots of good options besides these two altos, but I still think that they are both very good options. This particular horn is SN#11xxx and has just been put into good playing condition on a mix of older and newer pads. There is some light lacquer wear and a small dent was removed from the side of the neck. The bell flare also had a small dent removed from it, and it’s also hard to see that one. Other than that the horn is nice and clean structurally.

This is a nice, clean purple label YAS-62 with virtually all of its lacquer intact. There is some light scratching in the lacquer on the back of the body and just a little bit of play wear. It was repadded around 6 years ago and has good pads, just adjusted, (several replaced), and plays great. It is totally ready to go currently and will be for a long time. It ships in the original case. This is a great deal for what is one of the best sounding modern altos. You could certainly spend more money on a modern alto, but even if you do, it’s not going to sound much better than this!

This is a beautiful, near mint purple label Yamaha 62 alto. It has only a few light scratches on the back of the body, and the rest of the horn is basically perfect. It comes with the original case and a nice vintage Yamaha case cover as well! This is a super-clean example of one of the best modern altos period. It plays well with a medium bright tone, great intonation, and a more interesting-sounding core to the sound than most other Yamahas. The tone is more Selmer-leaning and more like a Mark VI in general than you will find on just about any other modern horn that I know of.

Yamaha YAS-62 Purple Logo Alto Saxophone 19509

This is a gorgeous example of a Yamaha YAS-62 from the early 80’s. The desirable ‘purple logo’ or ‘purple label’ version of the 62 is warmest and most complex sounding of the 62’s and is a great all-around alto saxophone. It was Yamaha’s top professional model in its day, equivalent to the 82 or 875’s role in today’s Yamaha lineup. Easily one of the best modern altos made. If you want one that is very clean and original, this is it.

Yamaha YAS-62 Purple Logo Alto Saxophone Excellent Condition Overhauled!

Yamaha 62 ‘Purple Logo’ or Purple Label alto saxophones are Yamaha’s first real professional saxophone from the 1980’s. They remain one of the best options for a great sounding alto sax with modern keywork and a rich, interesting tone. The YAS-62 Purple Logo has more warmth and complexity to the tone than the later 62-II or III versions (which are more clear and round).

So many players are looking for that one alto that does everything well, and sounds warm and interesting. The 62 Purple Logo is one of those rare horns that really does do everything well. It tunes great, feels really comfortable under the fingers, and just responds effortlessly. This particular example could hardly be nicer. It’s in excellent condition with no past repairs and no damage.

This alto is getting a full mechanical overhaul right now, which means it will be back to like new, or better-than-new condition mechanically, and playing wise. If you’re not used to used saxophone lingo, that means that a highly-skilled woodwind repairman is going to be spending about 30 hours of labor on this horn going over every detail, and replacing everything that can be replaced, so that it’s totally rebuilt and ready for its next many years of playing. That’s a big added value for you, because you don’t have to worry about the horn needing more than minor occasional maintenance to play its best for many years to come.

I have no trouble selling these Purple Logo Yamaha 62 altos as soon as anyone plays one with the fresh overhaul. It’s really hard to beat, regardless of price. Plays circles around new Selmers that cost twice as much, unless they too have been overhauled!

This is an excellent condition silver-plated Yamaha 62 alto. This is the 62 that comes between the purple label horns and the later 62-II, and it has its original neck as well. This horn is in excellent playing condition with a high-end repad, and the original case is in great shape as well. It comes with a really cool Oleg thumb hook that is very comfortable. It also comes with the original Yamaha thumb hook too, and they are easy to swap (just one screw). The silver plate is basically all there. The tone on this horn is clear, round, and medium bright, with quite a bit of flexibility based on which mouthpiece you choose. It would be an ideal choice for a serious student, school band, lessons, college study, or with a more aggressive mouthpiece, a louder band/jazz/rock/R&B setting (and it would look cool on stage too.).

Yamaha YAS-875 Alto Saxophone Beautiful Balanced Player 4356

The original Yamaha 875 will always have a special place in my heart, because an alto just like this one was my first fully professional saxophone that I saved up and bought many years ago. The Yamaha Custom line is built to be the best of the best. It does everything pretty well, and it is just effortless to play and to keep in good adjustment over time.

This horn is in very good playing condition and feels great under the fingers. Yamahas come with fairly stiff action, and they need the spring tensions adjusted lighter if you intend to play them for very long at a time. This one had that done, and got the pads all tuned up also. It has a focused, projecting, medium tone between bright and dark.

All in all, you’re getting a great, fully professional Yamaha Custom alto built to outlast anyone who may be reading this description. It tunes great, it feels great, and it just plays so easily. The horn gets out of the way so that you can make the music that you want. And the tone itself is beautiful, round, warm, and medium dark. Works great for jazz with a Meyer style piece, or for classical with just about anything you want to use. Getting a used pro alto like this is a smart move. It holds its value and is satisfying to own. Way better decision than buying a new student instrument or a Taiwanese sax that will instantly lose half its value as soon as you buy it! This plays better and holds up much better over time. Top quality.

The Yamaha Custom series is Yamaha’s top of the line model of saxophone. The original 875 was hand made and is my favorite of all the Custom series horns. This is not the later EX model. The EX is too bright in my view, and almost nasal on alto (though the soprano EX is nice). The original 875 is darker and much more complex. It actually has a great tone for both classical and jazz. The dark core is great with a jazz mouthpiece for giving you a full-bodied tone with a bright edge. The roundness and clarity of tone works great for classical as well (though with a different mouthpiece, of course). Intonation is of course excellent, as are the ergonomics of the horn.

The 475 is Yamaha’s modern one-piece soprano, and it has several good things going for it. As a one-piece, it is lighter in the hands than any of the other sopranos that Yamaha makes. It has great build quality, a sweet tone, and modern ergonomics. The intonation is excellent, and it is also a nicely resonant horn that comes alive in your hands efforlessly.

The Yamaha 62 is still the best single piece soprano that has been made. It came in two versions, the straight one (this one) and the one that is slightly curved (see the 62R in the museum section). Both horns have such a nice, rich tone that they are really hard to beat. Some vintage horns, like the Conn New Wonder II, Buescher True Tone, or the Martin Handcraft can compete with the 62 in the tone department, but all of these have very flexible intonation and vintage ergonomics. So if you are looking for the soprano that has it all, it is the 62. This particular horn is in mint condition. The lacquer all there, and there are no dents, dings or past repairs.

Simply put, this is a mint condition Yamaha 62R soprano in the mint original case, with the original mouthpiece, polishing cloth, and keys. It has an extremely desirable 3-digit serial# 272, so it is one of the first ones ever made. The original owner who sold it to me, bought it new and hardly ever played it. It would be impossible to find a more perfect 62R because this one is perfect and like new. It has no dents, no dings, no scratches, no wear to the lacquer, and no past repairs. The pads seal well and are in excellent condition. This is as good as it gets on a vintage Yamaha soprano.

This is a near mint 62R soprano. There’s not even any play wear on this horn. Looks like one tiny ding on the back below the D palm key. This horn plays GREAT, with a nice, full, rich tone. Excellent ergonomics and intonation as well. It ships in the original case which is also in great condition. This is a great price for what is possibly the best soprano ever made. Since Yamaha’s new 82ZR turned out to be basically a (somewhat-more-tinny-sounding?) reissue of the 62R, these horns have become even more desirable (compare to original vs reissue guitars). They are also made with different brass than the 82ZR.

This is a very nearly mint condition Yamaha 62R soprano in the original case, with the original mouthpiece and keys. It has an extremely desirable 3-digit serial# 9xx, so it is one of the very early ones with the low C# key on the top. It has no dents, very few scratches, and no past repairs. There is just the slightest speckling in the lacquer in a couple of places, like on the low C pad cup (this is very hard to see), and some light scratches inside the bell. The pads seal well and are in good condition.

Simply put, this is a mint condition Yamaha 62R soprano in the mint original case, with the original mouthpiece, polishing cloth, and keys. It has an extremely desirable 3-digit serial# 561. It would be impossible to find a more perfect 62R because this one is perfect and like new. It has no dents, no dings, no scratches, no wear to the lacquer, and no past repairs. The pads seal well and are in excellent condition. This is as good as it gets on a vintage Yamaha soprano.

Here is an excellent condition example of a (lightly) used Yamaha 675 soprano sax. This horn has almost no lacquer wear, with one spot of scratches on the bell, no dents or dings or past repairs. It looks great and plays great right out of the case. The 675 is an excellent professional soprano, and it sounds virtually the same as the more expensive 875 version of Yamaha’s custom line. This particular horn has a rich, full tone that is round and clear. If you are getting into soprano sax for the first time, or moving up from a cheaper horn to something good, then the Yamaha 675 sopranos are the perfect choice.

Here is an excellent condition example of a Yamaha 675 soprano sax. If you’re wanting to get into soprano and you’re not sure what to buy, this is what I would recommend. This horn has no dents or dings or past repairs at all. It has just had a tune up and is playing its best right out of the case. Because it is so clean and little-used, it will be good to go for a long time.

The Yamaha 52 tenor is probably the best modern horn in this price range. It is a nice, do it all kind of tenor with a clear, round tone and excellent intonation and ergonomics. This horn has good pads and plays well. Buying a used horn like this is a great decision whether you are looking for a first horn, or whether you are a pro player who needs a doubling tenor or a good backup horn. Like Hondas, Yamahas hold their value well and are extremely reliable.

The Yamaha 52 tenor is probably the best modern horn in this price range. (Other options might be a YTS-61 or a Yanagisawa T-800). The 52 is a slightly cheapened version of Yamaha’s pro-line 62 series horn, and the tone is very similar. It is a nice, do it all kind of tenor with a clear, round tone and excellent intonation and ergonomics. This horn had all new pads by Matt Stohrer about a year ago, and it feels and plays very well.

Each of the Yamaha models has its strengths and weaknesses, but as far as I am concerned, the purple label 62’s are easily the best made so far (the next best tenors are the original 875, I think).  They have a vintage warmth and interest to the tone while keeping Yamaha’s excellent ergonomics and intonation. That makes these very hard horns to beat. For anyone who wants to go vintage but not too vintage, this horn is a no-brainer.

Each of the Yamaha models has its strengths and weaknesses, but as far as I am concerned, the purple label 62’s are easily the best made so far. This particular 62 is in like new condition. I have never seen one this nice before. Everything is still perfect and all original, and it even includes the case keys, strap, cork grease, and owner’s manual. This is an early serial 62 and the silk screen Yamaha logo is still perfect as well. The case is also in mint condition. There is not so much as a scratch on this horn. It is as close as you will get to going back to 1980 and buying one new.

The Yamaha 62 tenor was Yamaha’s top of the line model when this horn was made. This is an 80’s model, which is the best vintage for buying a 62. And if what you like is a horn that feels more complex tonally, tunes great, is well-made, and is super easy to play, then this is probably what you should buy. You should also note, this is a much better horn than the modern intermediate models called Yamaha 62-II or 62-III. This is the original, pro horn that is equivalent in sound and quality to the highly coveted YSS-62 sopranos.

This is a near mint example of a Yamaha YTS-62 professional tenor sax. This horn has not been played much at all. It is in great playing condition and the only wear is a little spot on the back of the body tube. The pads are in excellent condition as well. This horn has a clear, round, medium-bright tone and excellent intonation. The ergonomics are as good as it gets, and the feel under your fingers is just what you expect in a great tenor. This is the middle version of the 62. It is not the early purple label, nor is it the 62II that is made today. This one retains some of the complexity and punch to the tone that made the purple label horns great, yet it has sturdier construction and feels generally more modern than the earlier horn.

This is a mint/near mint YTS-62 tenor in the original case. It has the G1 neck, and the whole horn looks like it has been played no more than 10-15 times ever. There are a couple of spots where the lacquer has tarnished a bit in storage, but there is hardly a scratch on the whole horn. These horns are great for classical playing because they have excellent ergonomics, intonation, and a clear round tone. For jazz or other playing, they work well if you have an interesting-sounding mouthpiece.

This Yamaha 62 tenor is in excellent condition. Each of the Yamaha models has its strengths and weaknesses, but as far as I am concerned, the early, purple label 62’s are easily the best made so far for getting a warm, complex tone reminiscent of vintage SelmersIt has almost all of the original silver plate. It has no dents or current issues. It has had a few small dents removed – by the D palm key and by the low C/Eb post. The Eb key guard was also resoldered. The bow and bell flare look good, and the body tube is clean as well. This horn was just put into good playing condition and plays very well! These horns are hard to beat for all-around playability, tone, ergonomics, and intonation, which is probably why they are still so popular with pro players today.

Yamaha YTS-82ZII Tenor Saxophone Fresh Full Overhaul V1 Neck Effortless Player Excellent Condition 83913

This is an excellent physical condition Yamaha Custom 82ZII tenor with a fresh overhaul.  The overhaul is very clean and well done, and the pads have domed metal resonators that impart a bit more zing to the tone than the plastic resonators that Yamaha’s typically come with from the factory.  So it’s all here: Yamaha quality, intonation, and craftsmanship plus a bit more than usual in the tone department with completely fresh pads, all for $1000 less than a new Yamaha tenor. Hard to go wrong with this horn.

The original 875 tenors by Yamaha are darker and more complex than any other Yamaha tenor made so far. They have a rich core to the sound that is more like an early Selmer than you will find in the rest of Yamaha’s line (Though it is still a Yamaha sound). I am not sure why this is, but I played one of these for many years and loved it. You get a nice, fat, medium-dark tone with excellent build quality and modern keywork, ergonomics, and intonation. If you like Yamaha but want a darker tone, this is the horn for you. It works equally well for classical, legit, jazz, or even rock with a brighter mouthpiece. Or if you are looking for a good all-around modern pro tenor, look no further. This is it.

I have a special place in my heart for this particular model of tenor because it is what I played in college and for several years after that. Out of all the Yamaha tenors, the silver 875 is the darkest that I have played yet. It has a more complex core tone than most Yamahas while preserving the excellent intonation and ergonomics that everyone wants in this brand. Plus it’s just gorgeous. This particular horn has some light scratches on the front of the bow and just a few other places. Besides that, it’s in excellent physical condition with no dents or dings or past repairs.
