New Old Stock Yamaha Purple Logo Baritone Saxophone YBS-62 Mint Unbelievable! Overhauled!

Now comes with a full overhaul!! All new pads and the full deal. That’s a huge added value. It plays EFFORTLESSLY and beautifully, with a warm, complex tone. Take it in a funk direction with an aggressive mouthpiece, and it will bark and cut without thinning out. Take it in a classical direction, and it will do a gorgeous cello-like tone better than any other baritone that I know of. Highly recommended!

This is an amazing chance to get a new old stock Purple Logo YBS-62 baritone saxophone. This sax was originally a display model that Yamaha brought to the USA for a trade show almost 40 years ago. Yamaha sold the instruments from the display, and they sat in someone’s closet for that entire time. This sax came in the plastic in the case, and I had to take it out to take photos. There are maybe a few of the lightest possible surface scratches not through the lacquer, but aside from that, it looks as new as it could be and be from the early 80’s. The tone is beautiful and warm, rich, and medium focused. Intonation is great. Works with just about any mouthpiece. This horn can play the full range from classical to funk no problem and be as reliable as a Lexus day after day, year after year. This is BY FAR the nicest example of a purple logo 62 baritone that I have seen, and the nicest one we are likely to see.

It has the case keys, the polishing cloth, mouthpiece and ligature, warranty booklet, and even a set of removable wheels that attach to the end of the case so that you can roll it if you want. First time I have seen that. If you want a beautiful baritone to play that is really special, this is it. And at this price, it’s about the same as buying a modern 62, so you don’t even pay a premium to get the new old stock. That’s pretty great.

The Yamaha 82z is a great professional alto sax from Yamaha. It has great intonation, excellent ergonomics, and a flexible tone that works well for all kinds of playing. This horn is in great cosmetic shape with only light play wear. It has all new pads just put in by Matt Stohrer, who is one of the best in the business, so the pad work is actually better than new.

I always tell people that if you want the modern professional alto sax with the best sound and best price, you should get an 82z. This horn has a medium bright tone with enough character to make it an excellent horn for jazz, but it also has a clear enough tone and great intonation so that it is a popular choice for classical and ensemble playing. It’s the best do-it-all horn available today.

This is an excellent condition, factory unlacquered Yamaha 82z tenor. It is in totally clean condition with no past damage and no past repairs. It has the original pads, which are in medium condition, between old and new. Let me know if you want to get this horn with all new pads, just to get everything in the best condition that it can be. For now, it’s like any other 82z tenor that you would find used, with the factory yamaha pads. It plays with a medium bright, modern tone (which is fairly clear/clean with a punchy edge). This horn ships in the original case also in great condition.

This is a gorgeous, special order Yamaha ‘Atelier’ 82z tenor without high F# and with dark lacquer. These Atelier tenors get a lot of special treatment from the Yamaha pro shop, and they play like it. This one is big, medium between bright and dark, and rich sounding with lots of projection. Low register is effortless. Altissimo is easy. Intonation is also great. It looks amazing too. I wish Yamaha used this lacquer on all its horns! These are over $7299 new, and this one is in excellent condition and lightly played, well cared for, and pro-owned. It’s hard to beat!

Here’s a chance to get a like new 82ZRS for quite a bit less than a new one, but still in mint condition, or even better, because it has already been looked at by a tech to check out the factory setup. This horn has been played very little, and is as close to new condition as you would ever find a used saxophone. This is one of those horns that soprano players dream of – the one piece, bent neck Yamaha 82ZR. This horn is based on Yamaha’s epic 62R soprano and seems to be very similar to a 62R once it is properly setup. This particular horn is silver-plated. Silver plated 62R sopranos tend to be the most desirable type, either because of the rarity or because some players think they sound different.

The Yamaha Custom EX is one of the most popular modern altos for serious saxophone players and students on the college level and beyond. The reason people love these horns so much is that they have incredible intonation and very comfortable ergonomics. They are dependable and well setup from the factory, and they are also very easy to maintain.

This is an excellent condition, factory unlacquered Yamaha 82z alto with high F#. It has one small scratch on the back of the bow from a saxophone stand, and besides that (which is very minor) it is in totally clean condition. This horn just received all new pads done by Matt Stohrer, and it feels and plays better than new. This pad work is also long-lasting and will hold up for many years even with heavy playing. This horn ships in the original case also in great condition.

Yamaha SILVER YSS-82ZRS Soprano Saxophone Mint Condition Setup Excellent

                    $ 4,900

This is a mint condition Yamaha YSS-82ZRS soprano. The Yamaha 82ZRS is basically a reissue of the popular Yamaha 62 soprano. The silver versions were the most desirable of the Yamaha YSS-62R on which the 82ZR is based. So if you have always wanted to get a Yamaha YSS-62RS this is nearly identical, but with some upgraded keywork. The main changes are that the left hand pinky (spatula) keys are now easier to operate and the palm keys are a little more comfortable. Yamaha tells me that the bore and dimensions of the 82ZR are exactly the same as the 62R, and on purpose. It is meant to be a modern reissue of the enormously popular 62R. With the 62R, Yamaha finally broke with the Selmer Mark VI soprano tonal concept and do something warmer, rounder, and more pleasant. It became an instant classic. There’s a big demand for more of these, so Yamaha helpfully rose to the occasion.

The reason that the 62R/82ZR is so popular is the combination of one piece design – no neck joint to lose air or resonance – and the warm, complex tone that these horns get. And the bent neck, which brings the horn down onto the neck strap for added comfort. Branford Marsalis plays this model, and sounds wonderful on it. I think he helped with the keywork improvements also. In short, it’s probably the best modern soprano available: Lightest, most resonant, very in tune, most comfortable to play, best long term investment. It’s a modern classic.

If like me, you have always wanted one of these horns in silver, now is your chance. They are hard to find! This one just got its checkup and is ready to go! It is in basically mint condition, but has been played maybe a couple of hours total.

Yamaha YAS-200AD Good Student Alto Just Serviced

Are you shopping for a saxophone for a student for school band? This is the one you should get. it’s that simple. Just get it. Done. Look no further.

The Yamaha YAS-200AD (and its sibling the YAS-23) are the best student alto saxophones ever made. A Yamaha like this is what almost everybody my age started out on, if they stuck with saxophone. It almost makes me think that some of the folks who started on junky horns probably gave up music because their horns were so disappointing to play. So if you want yourself or your child to stick with saxophone, it’s worth buying one that will actually play well and hold up well over time.

The other consideration in buying a student sax is resale value. Among student saxophones, it’s common to hear of folks paying $1200-1600 for a beginner sax that is then practically worthless when they go to re-sell it. I get offered these sorts of horns to buy almost every day, and I have to be the one to break the difficult news that the sax they rented for three years for $48 a month from the local music store is basically a worthless on the used market. The used Yamaha is among a very few student horns that has good resale value. If the pads are good, you can easily resell it and get back 80% of your purchase price, which is so much better than 10% or whatever on new other brand student horns as not to be even comparable.

This alto just got a bunch of new pads and is now playing quite well, with an easy low register, and a nicely in tune scale. It includes all the stuff in the photos, and I can throw in a Yamaha 4C or help you pick a good beginner mouthpiece to go with it. (Mouthpiece is important.)

Here’s a nice, dependable alto saxophone from Yamaha. This is the same type of alto that I first got when I was in school band, (also used) and it served me well. Actually, the students playing Yamahas tended to end up in first chair more often than their colleagues who had brand new saxophones of other makes, becausethe Yamaha is just better made, sounds better, holds up better, and needs less maintenance than other entry-level saxophones. It plays better than many other saxophones billed as “intermediate/professional” in fact.

This is a fantastic condition Yamaha YAS-23 alto saxophone, that is the top recommendation of most band directors for a first alto saxophone. At $2166 for a YAS26 (modern model number),  the new price can be a stretch for many band parents. This one saves you $900+ off the price, and the horn looks great and plays better than new, because my repairman just did a full overhaul, and went completely over the horn made sure that it’s playing its absolute best. (It got way more attention than a typical YAS-26 you’d buy at Music and Arts or whatever.) Looks beautufl as well, and I can also jump start your saxophone career with some free accessories, and advise you on a good mouthpiece and reed setup to get you going (this can help a LOT).

Only one available! But if you aren’t the lucky family that gets this one, check the altos category for more YAS-23’s and YAS-26’s. I buy them and fix them up as a service to young saxophonists. I make virtually no money doing it, but every good saxophonist I know started on one of these. Here’s an early Yamaha 475 alto, which is actually a surprisingly good alto. It looks like it was made with the tooling for the original version of the professional Yamaha purple logo 62, so it’s a good deal for the money. Because it’s a Yamaha – it comes apart and goes back together easily, the keywork is modern and has no surprises, it’s well made etc. This would be perfect for someone who doubles on alto, needs a gigging alto, or a student who needs a good alto to grow into, but who has a tight budget. As long as you have a local music store to put some pads in, you can get a good horn for a great price that should serve you well for years.

The Yamaha 52 alto is one of the best deals among modern alto saxophones. It does pretty much everything well, and it plays like a purple logo Yamaha 62 alto, but costs half as much. This one just got a complete setup with lots of new pads, complete disassembly, cleaning, new oil, new adjustment materials – nearly an overhaul. It plays effortlessly and sounds great with a warm, medium tone between bright and dark. For the price of a student alto, you get what is nearly a pro model. Only one available!

Yamaha YAS-62 Alto Purple Logo 1980’s Near Mint Overhauled! 11173

The ‘purple logo’ Yamaha YAS-62 alto saxophone from the 1980’s is one of my favorite all-around alto saxophones made. It has a surprisingly ‘fat’ sound – meaning it doesn’t thin out or get nasal even if you push it to the limit, as Dave Koz has been doing with his 62 (same vintage as this but in silver plate) for around 35 years. Not that you have to go for that aggressive sort of tone, but you can hear how, even with a metal, high baffle mouthpiece that is as bright as you can get on alto, the tone still has warmth and depth to it.

This particular 62 alto sax is nearly as nice an example as I have seen. It just received a full, high-end overhaul, and it plays like CRAZY! It’s super responsive, warm, flexible, and tunes great. By ‘overhaul’, I mean that a skilled saxophone repairman spent about 30 hours working on this, cleaning, adjusting, refitting all keys, and changing everything that can be changed or refreshed to make it as close to new as possible again. It needs to be done every couple of decades to most saxophones, even if they are in as near to new condition as this one is.  Condition wise, it’s near mint/ excellent with a little spot of tarnish near the low Eb key, and a tiny scratch on the back of the body tube near the strap hook, and that’s really about it versus being a new horn!

You would be hard pressed to find a better alto saxophone with modern keywork in this price range. This alto plays at 100% of its potential, has all-new everything, and will not need signficant work for many years. I love these purple logo 62’s, so I will try to keep them in stock.

This is nice condition Yamaha 62 alto. This is the 62 that comes between the purple label horns and the later 62-II, and it has its original neck as well. This horn is in excellent playing condition and comes in a new ProTec gig bag. The lacquer is in good shape with only minor scratching from use. The tone on this horn is clear, round, and medium bright, with quite a bit of flexibility based on which mouthpiece you choose. It would be an ideal choice for a serious student, school band, lessons, college study, or with a more aggressive mouthpiece, a louder band/jazz/rock/R&B setting.

Yamaha YAS-62 Alto Saxophone Excellent Condition Professional Great Deal! 27797

If you want a Yamaha 62 that has all new pads and feels like a million bucks, this is it. It really plays great, with super-flat, snappy pad seats. This horn got a full repad, which means all new pads, but it didn’t need a mechanical overhaul (keywork didn’t need restored), and it didn’t need all new corks and felts, though it has many new corks and felts. That’s simply to keep the cost down and get you a horn that is totally ready to go and will not need significant work for many years, besides just occasional check ups. The Yamaha YAS-62 is a great value, because it’s a professional alto, but sells for less money, and is easily good enough to last you all the way through college or for as long as you want to play it. You never need to upgrade. And you save a lot of money versus buying new, and the saxophone also retains all or most of its resale value. Especially with the kind of pad work this one has. Just play it, and it sells itself.

Yamaha YAS-62 Alto Saxophone Good Condition Great Deal!

The Yamaha 62 is one of the best modern altos made. It’s probably the #1 choice for a pro alto for most people buying a first good saxophone over the past 20 years or so, because it gets you pro quality for a price that is lower than anything else on the market that is similarly good (with the exception of the Yanagisawa A901, which is also fantastic and in this price range, but less widely known.)

This particular example has been played quite a bit. It shows cosmetic wear from regular use, and the pads are also old. I will eventually get the pads replaced, but in the meantime, it is listed for a super price, and you can simply buy it, take it in, and get the pads replaced yourself and save some money. This is the 62-1, and is probably from around the early 1990’s. Just give it a repad, and you will have yourself an excellent alto that does everything well. These have great tone; great intonation; easy, ergonomic keywork; and they are very reliable to own and play.

If you follow this site much, you will know that I think that the best-sounding modern altos are the 80’s Yamaha 62 and the 80’s Yanagisawa 880. These horns combine modern keywork, ergonomics, and intonation with a warmer, more interesting basic tone than has become the recent trend among major manufacturers. There are, thankfully, lots of good horns made today, and mouthpiece choice makes a huge difference to the tone that you get, so there are lots of good options besides these two altos, but I still think that they are both very good options. This particular horn is SN#11xxx and has just been put into good playing condition on a mix of older and newer pads. There is some light lacquer wear and a small dent was removed from the side of the neck. The bell flare also had a small dent removed from it, and it’s also hard to see that one. Other than that the horn is nice and clean structurally.

This is a nice, clean purple label YAS-62 with virtually all of its lacquer intact. There is some light scratching in the lacquer on the back of the body and just a little bit of play wear. It was repadded around 6 years ago and has good pads, just adjusted, (several replaced), and plays great. It is totally ready to go currently and will be for a long time. It ships in the original case. This is a great deal for what is one of the best sounding modern altos. You could certainly spend more money on a modern alto, but even if you do, it’s not going to sound much better than this!

This is a beautiful, near mint purple label Yamaha 62 alto. It has only a few light scratches on the back of the body, and the rest of the horn is basically perfect. It comes with the original case and a nice vintage Yamaha case cover as well! This is a super-clean example of one of the best modern altos period. It plays well with a medium bright tone, great intonation, and a more interesting-sounding core to the sound than most other Yamahas. The tone is more Selmer-leaning and more like a Mark VI in general than you will find on just about any other modern horn that I know of.

Yamaha YAS-62 Purple Logo Alto 1980’s Warm, Beautiful Tone Incl Full Overhaul

Just completely overhauled to effortless perfection! This 1980’s ‘Purple Logo’ Yamaha 62 alto saxophone is just so nice to play. The Purple Logo 62s are a sweet spot for alto saxophones in general, because they combine the comfort and ease of modern keywork with a more warm, complex tone than you find on other later Yamahas. This vintage of 62 is more like a vintage Selmer, where the later Yamahas went for a clearer, rounder, brighter tone. This is more middle of the road on the bright/dark spectrum, and it’s not as clear, but more warm and has more complexity to the basic tone. It feels more like a vintage horn also – easier to bend notes around, where more recent ones are just slotted in what-you-get-is-what-you-yet tonally and pitch wise. This lets you do more. It’s a Yamaha with the training wheels off.

The full overhaul spared no detail of restoring this alto to perfect mechanical and playing condition. There’s just a bit of cosmetic wear from use, and that’s really it for the description of the condition. It’s effortless to play. Low register produces a saturated pianissimo without any trouble. Low Bb is just another note. These usually sell about $400-500 higher, but I’m discounting this one for quick sale to be a great deal for some lucky player. If you get this alto, you never need to upgrade. It will be beautifully performing for you for as long as you want to play it, and with the fresh, high-end overhaul, it will stay in great adjustment with only the most minimal of maintenance! It’s an easy, turn-key purchase on a beautifully playing horn.

This is a gorgeous example of a Yamaha YAS-62 from the early 80’s. The desirable ‘purple logo’ or ‘purple label’ version of the 62 is warmest and most complex sounding of the 62’s and is a great all-around alto saxophone. It was Yamaha’s top professional model in its day, equivalent to the 82 or 875’s role in today’s Yamaha lineup. Easily one of the best modern altos made. If you want one that is very clean and original, this is it.

Yamaha YAS-62 Purple Logo Alto Saxophone Excellent Condition Overhauled!

Yamaha 62 ‘Purple Logo’ or Purple Label alto saxophones are Yamaha’s first real professional saxophone from the 1980’s. They remain one of the best options for a great sounding alto sax with modern keywork and a rich, interesting tone. The YAS-62 Purple Logo has more warmth and complexity to the tone than the later 62-II or III versions (which are more clear and round).

So many players are looking for that one alto that does everything well, and sounds warm and interesting. The 62 Purple Logo is one of those rare horns that really does do everything well. It tunes great, feels really comfortable under the fingers, and just responds effortlessly. This particular example could hardly be nicer. It’s in excellent condition with no past repairs and no damage.

This alto is getting a full mechanical overhaul right now, which means it will be back to like new, or better-than-new condition mechanically, and playing wise. If you’re not used to used saxophone lingo, that means that a highly-skilled woodwind repairman is going to be spending about 30 hours of labor on this horn going over every detail, and replacing everything that can be replaced, so that it’s totally rebuilt and ready for its next many years of playing. That’s a big added value for you, because you don’t have to worry about the horn needing more than minor occasional maintenance to play its best for many years to come.

I have no trouble selling these Purple Logo Yamaha 62 altos as soon as anyone plays one with the fresh overhaul. It’s really hard to beat, regardless of price. Plays circles around new Selmers that cost twice as much, unless they too have been overhauled!

Yamaha YAS-62III Alto Saxophone Brand New with Warranty!

The YAS-62III Alto saxophone from Yamaha is the go-to, top recommended first professional alto saxophone from most teachers and band directors I have talked to over the years. Again and again online, someone asks something like, “We want to get our daughter/son a good saxophone. Our budget is around $3000. What should we get?” The most common answer is basically always a Yamaha YAS-62III alto. Why? It just works. It’s a professional horn that is extremely reliable and made in Japan, with excellent build quality, great intonation, and a top quality factory setup. You can use virtually any mouthpiece on it, and it will still tune well. That lets you take the (admittedly rather vanilla) tone in myriad directions. Yamaha is a conservative company, and their crowd pleaser YAS-62III alto saxophone is meant to get the job done without over-determining the tone.  It’s clear, medium bright, and round. Not too loud and in your face, not very dark or too bright. Works for classical or jazz.

It’s hard to keep these horns in stock, as Yamaha has been backordered on them for a long time. I have one available late September, 2022. These come with a new horn checkup before they go to you, meaning my (experienced/skilled/picky) repairman makes sure that the horn plays like it should. Often there are 2 or three little tweaks that take the horn from good to great, and that’s actually a big added value to you to have us do that before you get it. Most of the differerces between new horns of the same model at a store are due to the lack of a good new horn checkup.

Yamaha YAS-82z Alto Very Good Condition Plays Great Just Serviced

If you want a modern alto that is tried and true and that will do it all, the Yamaha 82z is the horn for you. This one is nice and clean, original lacquer of course, and it has been very well cared-for since new. It just got all new sprung-open pads, so most of the pads are new, and all of the rest of them are in great shape, so this horn is ready to go for a long time with only minor regular maintenance to keep it playing its best (much like a new Yamaha). If you want a brand new 82Z, I can also sell you one of those that also has the GetASax new horn setup already done on it!

As for this one, it’s a smart purchase. When you buy a used modern horn, as I have often said, you are buying not just the cosmetic condition, but also the pad condition. This one is playing great, all nicely setup, and ready to go for a long time. You won’t need to drop $500 on getting the pads replaced like you would on many other used Yamaha YAS-82Z altos out there. It’s a turn key purchase, and you get a horn that is reliable, dependable, and that sounds and responds extremely well.

For comfort of keywork, easy intonation, tone, playability, versatility, and build quality, it is really hard to beat the Yamaha custom saxophones. This should be a great pro alto for someone, or a great step up alto that you never need to upgrade for a serious student. There’s really no reason to ever buy a student alto if you can afford a used pro alto like this. The pro horn is easier to play and holds its value extremely well over time. Buy it now and get playing!

If you want a modern alto that is tried and true and that will do it all, the Yamaha 82z is the horn for you. This one is nice and clean, original BLACK lacquer of course, and it has been very well cared-for since new. Black lacquer is an expensive, special order item from Yamaha, making it way rarer than the standard lacquered brass finish. I love the look of the engraving cutting through the black lacquer down to the brass. It is probably the most beautiful finish option that Yamaha offers, and it really turns heads. It also makes the horn more valuable, and makes it easier to sell down the road, should you ever want to. With a used pro horn like this, you can always get almost all your purchase price back out when selling, because pro saxophones don’t wear out if maintained, and new ones keep getting more expensive all the time.

This YAS-82ZB alto sax just got a bunch of new pads, so most of the pads are new, and all of the rest of them are in great shape, so this horn is ready to go for a long time with only minor regular maintenance to keep it playing its best (much like a new Yamaha). This one is in virtually like new condition. It’s ‘mint’ to ‘near mint’ – I mean we took it out to do the video, but it has been played very very little since new. Yamaha YAS-875 Alto Saxophone Beautiful Balanced Player 4356

The original Yamaha 875 will always have a special place in my heart, because an alto just like this one was my first fully professional saxophone that I saved up and bought many years ago. The Yamaha Custom line is built to be the best of the best. It does everything pretty well, and it is just effortless to play and to keep in good adjustment over time.

This horn is in very good playing condition and feels great under the fingers. Yamahas come with fairly stiff action, and they need the spring tensions adjusted lighter if you intend to play them for very long at a time. This one had that done, and got the pads all tuned up also. It has a focused, projecting, medium tone between bright and dark.

All in all, you’re getting a great, fully professional Yamaha Custom alto built to outlast anyone who may be reading this description. It tunes great, it feels great, and it just plays so easily. The horn gets out of the way so that you can make the music that you want. And the tone itself is beautiful, round, warm, and medium dark. Works great for jazz with a Meyer style piece, or for classical with just about anything you want to use. Getting a used pro alto like this is a smart move. It holds its value and is satisfying to own. Way better decision than buying a new student instrument or a Taiwanese sax that will instantly lose half its value as soon as you buy it! This plays better and holds up much better over time. Top quality.

The Yamaha Custom series is Yamaha’s top of the line model of saxophone. The original 875 was hand made and is my favorite of all the Custom series horns. This is not the later EX model. The EX is too bright in my view, and almost nasal on alto (though the soprano EX is nice). The original 875 is darker and much more complex. It actually has a great tone for both classical and jazz. The dark core is great with a jazz mouthpiece for giving you a full-bodied tone with a bright edge. The roundness and clarity of tone works great for classical as well (though with a different mouthpiece, of course). Intonation is of course excellent, as are the ergonomics of the horn.

Yamaha YAS-875EX Alto Near Mint Condition Plays Great V1 Neck

The Yamaha 875EX is a top of the line professional Yamaha Custom alto saxophone that just gets the job done. It is a precision machine with top of the line intonation, response, and keywork. The tone is clear and medium bright and round. You can, of course, play any style on one of these, but they are very popular among classical saxophonists, because the round tone, when darkened up with a darker mouthpeice and reed, sounds very cello like and gorgeous. Plus the intonation makes classical and quartet work almost absurdly easy compared to most other saxophones. Some programs even require this model! This one has the desirable V1 neck, which seems to be Yamaha’s most popular neck version yet.

This particular example is in beautiful condition with only very minor wear from normal use. This is merely cosmetic, as saxophones do not really wear out if properly maintained. This 875EX comes with a thorough playing condition job included in the price, so that you receive it in excellent playing condition. The pads are in great shape, and the whole instrument is in excellent condition without any damage or problems at all. There are no past repairs or hidden problems either. It’s a nice, turn-key purchase for one of the finest saxophones made today.

Only one available. If you want a brand new 875EX, I would be happy to get you one, and all new horns purchased through GetASax also include a thorough new horn setup and a full Yamaha warranty.

The reason people love these horns so much is that they have incredible intonation and very comfortable ergonomics. They are dependable and well setup from the factory, and they are also very easy to maintain.

Priced $1000 less than a new one, and in nearly new condition, this is a great deal.

We pay the best prices for great saxophones.

Yamaha YAS-875EXB Alto Saxophone Black Lacquer Plays Great! C86433

This beautiful Yamaha Custom EX alto just got a thorough tune up including disassembly, cleaning, oil, and a bunch of new pads, and now it’s looking and playing its best! You seldom see Yamaha 875EX altos in special ordered black lacquer, but you should. It’s one of Yamaha’s most beautiful finishes. The ‘honest’ two tone look from the engraving cuts through the black lacquer is striking and gorgeous.

The main reason to buy a YAS-875EX is, of course, the tone and ease of playing that it offers. No other modern alto tunes as precisely or is so effortless to play in ensemble work. It’s almost like autopilot for sax. If you’ve been struggling to hold pitch on a cheap beginner or intermediate horn for years, you may be startled to find that your habits of correcting pitch are now entirely unnecessary. It just plays in tune. I’m dwelling on that, I know, but both on the alto and soprano EX models, that’s the most striking thing. The tone itself is medium between bright and dark. Brighter than the original Custom 875 model, which I also have available at the moment. The EX darkens down with a classical mouthpiece, or brightens up with a higher baffle, smaller chamber mouthpiece. The tone is not very complex, but is round and clear and projects easily. If you want to play concert, classical, or projecting commercial music, the crisp, clear tone is ideal for working with. If you’re playing smoky jazz ballads, you’ll need an interesting sounding mouthpiece to warm up the sound a bit, or just get a Conn 🙂

Only one available! This is a great deal on an effortless and beautiful Yamaha Custom alto!

Yamaha YAS-875EXII Alto Mint Like New with Solid Silver Neck! 45756

The Yamaha YAS-875EXII is the best alto saxophone that Yamaha makes, and is also the best all-around professional alto saxophone that you can get today for the money.

This particular one is an insanely good deal. Not only is it like new, and under 1 year old, barely played condition. But also, it comes with a second, solid-silver Yamaha neck which would cost you +$650. And the entire package is priced only $4000 versus the new price of $4730 + $650= $5380!

The silver neck adds some significant playability value. The tone has a different timbre, which is easy to hear in person and difficult to describe helpfully in text. We are actually making a video about this right now, because it’s so interesting. The short answer is that the silver changes the relative strengths of the different overtones that make up the timbre of the saxophone’s basic tone. To me, it sounds a little more focused, a little more ‘ringing’ and a little more powerful, but with the right mouthpiece, it might also sound a bit ‘darker’ and rounder.

Anyway, you won’t go wrong with this alto. It’s the one to get if you want a new Yamaha for serious saxophone playing, and the price is hard to beat. I’d price it higher if I owned it, but it’s on consignment and priced to sell.

Yamaha YAS-875EXII Alto Near Mint Condition + Overhauled! F07021

This is probably the first time I’ve gotten in a nearly new Yamaha Custom saxophone that had also been completely overhauled when it was brand new! But that’s what this is! The previous owner wanted it to be as good as it could possibly be, so he got it overhauled by Brad Wherry in Washington. It has Pisoni Pro Italian leather pads, and it plays like a dream. You won’t find a better playing EX alto. It’s just effortless. Low Bb whispers out like any other note, with a beautiful, saturated pianissimo. If you want an alto that is perfect, and that is precision tuned to play at the top level, this is it. He traded it because he wanted to go vintage, but you really couldn’t find a better Yamaha 875-EXII. If you are a parent of a serious saxophonist, this is the alto you want for serious saxophone study. The intonation is excellent; tone is beautiful; keywork is comfortable; no maintenance is required– it’s better than new.

Yamaha YAS-875S Alto Saxophone Original Silver Plate M1 + G1 Necks Overhauled! Excellent

This beautiful Yamaha Custom alto saxophone just got a complete high-end overhaul. It looks beautiful, and it feels and plays better than new. These 875’s are wonderful players. My first pro tenor was the 875S like this, and I quickly bought the matching alto and played them for years. This one is professionally setup better than you get on a new one, with faster action, and everything mechanically tight and ready to go for the next many years. The silver is nearly 100% present, so it looks close to new. The only past repair is a resoldered octave key touch on the body, where it must have popped off at some point. Interestingly, this alto comes with both the original silver M1 neck, AND a special silver plated G1 neck! You could complete the set and order a new silver V1 neck from me if you want to.

This is a great modern alto with a dark, complex tone and lots of interest to it. It works great for jazz and commercial music with a high baffle mouthpiece, because the darker tone stays fatter with the bright mouthpiece, and no other Yamaha has a darker more round classical tone than the original YAS-875. The EX is a wonderful saxophone, but it is brighter and clearer than the 875, so many folks who have come through the shop have preferred the fullness of the original Custom 875.
