The bronze and solid silver Yanagisawa tenors are among the best tenor saxophones made today. The Yanagisawa company makes only saxophones, and they make them with a continuous commitment to improvement. They have the best build quality of any modern saxophone, across the board, and the best factory setup and pad work, which is very important.

The 880 is what I always recommend to people looking for a great modern horn under $2000 that has a tone with a vintage element. This horn has an unusually rich, complex tone that is medium bright and has a nice lyrical, singing quality to it. It has a lot of flexibility according to what mouthpiece you choose, tone wise. The intonation and ergonomics are great, much like all the modern Yanagisawas.

This is a really special Yanagisawa Alto saxophone previously owned and played by a pro player who is very picky about his horns. This horn has an unusually rich, complex tone that is medium bright and has a nice lyrical, singing quality to it. It has a lot of flexibility according to what mouthpiece you choose, tone wise. The intonation and ergonomics are great, much like all the modern Yanagisawas.
Cosmetically, this horn is beautiful. It has no dents or dings or resolders, and the original neck is in great condition as well. The lacquer shows some normal wear in the usual places from playing. This horn ships in the original case, and it should make somebody really happy. It’s an outstanding saxophone for any price, and lucky for you, it’s priced very reasonably.

This is a freshly-overhauled 880 alto with a little bit of lacquer wear. If you read around on here, you’ll know that I think that the 880 is one of the best alto saxophones that you can buy for a number of reasons (great tone, great ergonomics, great build quality, great intonation). This horn sings with a medum bright tone with a nice substantial core to it. It has a beefy kind of core to it, and it sounds great for a wide range of styles of music, a lot like a Mark VI. The intonation is excellent, as is the build quality generally. It has a high F#. The ergonomics are modern and very comfortable. This horn will do it all, and it’s quite a bit cheaper than most other altos of this calibre.

The Yanagisawa (pronounced Yah-nuh-geh-sah-wah) A-880 is my overall favorite modern alto, and this is one of the nicest ones that I have seen. These horns are handmade in a small factory in Japan, and they are made by highly-skilled craftspeople who are producing the best-built saxophones in the world today. I played a Yanagisawa for many years before “going vintage,” and I love to recommend these to people who want the best tone possible, and who also want the convenience of modern keywork and very easy intonation (and a high F# key).

The Yanagisawa A-880 is one of my favorite altos of all time, and this is the best 880 that I have played so far. It is just back from Matt Stohrer, who replaced 14 pads and worked his magic generally, so that the horn feels very snappy under the fingers and should be good to go for a long time. This horn has only the lightest of wear. A couple of speckles on the neck, and a spot of wear on the side Bb key are about all that I see.  I will be sorry to see it go, but I plan on keeping a nice 880 on the site when at-all possible, so check back if this one sells. They are very consistent and very good every time.

This is a nice, silver-plated Yanagisawa A-901 alto. These are very high-quality, flexible altos that work great for a serious player who wants a top-quality instrument under $2k. I played an A901 for many years and loved it. The silver plate on this horn is almost all there, but there is some corrosion as well (see pictures). The pads are in excellent condition and almost all of them are new. They were replaced by Matt Stohrer, who does great pad work, so the horn is really in TOP playing condition and feels very good under the fingers. This means that the horn will be in great playing condition for many years to come.

Here is a very nice example of a Yanagisawa A-990 alto saxophone from Yanagisawa. This is Yanagisawa’s top professional model from the 1990’s and it is the predecessor of the current A-991. Sonically, this Yanagisawa is easily as good as any other professional alto saxophone that is being made today. It has amazingly good intonation, and a clear, round, medium bright tone that is suitable for all kinds of different playing situations, from classical to jazz and beyond. I have had several people come over looking at other horns and play this one and say WOW! If I needed an alto, I’d buy this! It is a fantastic player with a very good tone. It’s a deal at this price. Whoever gets this alto will be getting a great deal.

The earlier Yanagisawa altos are my favorites for tone quality, because they have a bit more character to the sound, and are not purely clear and round. This horn has a great tone that is medium bright with some complexity to it. Of course, all the fundamentals are there like you expect with Yanagisawa: the best ergonomics, excellent keywork and design, near-perfect intonation. This horn has no dents and no resolders. This horn was owned by a picky professional alto player who chose it out of tons of other horns. He traded it to me because he found an expensive tenor he just had to have. So now you have the chance to get one of the good ones! It has the original neck in great condition and it ships in the original case as well.

This horn is very clean with no past repairs and almost all its original lacquer intact. It has just had most of its pads replaced by an excellent saxophone technician and it is good to go for a long time. This is a fun horn to play, with a medium bright tone and an excellent setup. This is a like new example of a Yanagisawa A991 Alto. It’s even cleaner than a store demo horn, because it was bought new and played literally for under and hour. There is no wear of any kind and the pads also look brand new. This is Yanagisawa’s top professional model alto, and it features the best saxophone build quality in the world today. These are handmade in a small factory in Japan by a team of highly-skilled workers. It has “rib construction” which means that the keywork is attached to wide brass ribs on the body tube, giving it extra rigidity. This makes it stay in good adjustment even if you gig or travel with it a lot.

This is a near mint condition Yanagisawa A9930 Alto Saxophone. These solid silver horns retail at extremely high prices because the silver is so expensive. This horn has the silver neck and body, and brass bell and keywork. It looks amazing, and there is hardly a scratch in the lacquer at all. This horn has a great ringing tone that is clear, round, and bell-like. Maybe a little darker than the 991 that this horn is the silver version of. The pads are in excellent condition, and there are no past repairs or dents or dings at all. This is a rare chance to get a solid silver Yanagisawa at a big discount.

This is a stunning solid silver Yanagisawa A-9937 alto saxophone (engraved on bell but not on keywork). The neck, body tube, bow and bell are all solid silver, and the keywork is brass as always. This horn has been lightly played and shows little wear, except some minor lacquer wear on some of the brass keywork and some scratching on the back of the body. More details coming soon, unless I keep it!

Yanagisawa A880 Alto Saxophone Excellent Original Condition Great Deal!

This is a very well built professional saxophone that was made in about 1985 by Yanagisawa, a small company in Tokyo that makes only handbuilt professional saxophones.  The Yanagisawa 880 is not a very well known instrument, and as such can be bought for much less than it is worth. What it is, besides a very good value, is an amazingly well crafted and very durable professional saxophone that will outlast anyone reading this, given proper care.

This particular instrument plays well on its original pads, and looks like it was purchased, played for a few years, and then put away  It should continue to play well for a good long while, but plan on repadding it at some point (or have me get that done for you) as the pads, being made of leather and felt, do feel the effects of time even if they are unplayed.

This horn is in excellent physical condition, bearing a few small scuffs and scratches here and there from honest use, but it has no evidence of dents or dings, either past or present, and no evidence of any past repairs major or minor.  It comes with its original, well-fitting case and original mouthpiece (which looks to have been made by Leblanc, who was their US distributor).

This would be a perfect horn for someone looking to get their first professional saxophone, or for a professional player looking for a super solid backup horn.  It costs less than and is of a higher quality than the modern Taiwanese/Chinese/Vietnamese imports of various names, will last longer, and will hold its value much better.

These horns play very well (this one included) and owning an instrument of such quality craftsmanship is a deeply satisfying experience that deepens the relationship between player and horn.

Yanagisawa A901B Black Lacquer Alto Saxophone Near Mint Condition Gorgeous

This is a beautiful, near mint condition Yanagisawa A901B professional alto saxophone in excellent condition. It has original black lacquer with engraving cut through the black into the brass, giving the horn a beautiful two tone look. This horn just got tuned up thoroughly by Matt Stohrer, and it plays extremely well. I like the 901 the best of the modern Yanagisawa saxophones. It has a freer vibrating body tube than the 991, and it has a big, medium bright, open tone that works great for a range of playing settings. You can darken it up with a classical style mouthpiece, or you can brighten it up easily for jazz. Intonation and ergonomics are excellent. This horn is super well-built. Yanagisawa has the best build quality of any modern saxophone, and it will really hold up well over time.

Yanagisawa is making some wonderful saxophones these days, and their sopranos and baritones are particularly great. This is a B901 bari in excellent condition. It has had a small dent removed from the bell flare, and there is some very light lacquer wear in a few places. Other than that, the horn is near mint, with no dents, dings, or past repairs. I am a big fan of Yanagisawa baris – they have amazingly good intonation across all three octaves, and the tone is warm, clear, and flexible. You can sound vintage with an older mouthpiece, or play R&B or funk just by swapping to a different mouthpiece. Ergonomics are very comfortable, and the horn feels light for being a low A.

This is just about the ultimate modern bari imaginable. The solid bronze really darkens and complexifies the sound (my experience is that the base metal definitely does affect the sound of saxophones in a clearly demonstrable and repeatable way – I currently have a full set of 992’s and the trend is very obvious).

The Yanagisawa S6 and S800 are very similar models of saxophone. While some people will try to distinguish them by palm keys, both horns have VI style inline palm keys. The Elimona and S900 that follow these models are the first to have modern palm keys. This particular horn is the Martin version that was sold by Martin in the USA, but is the same as any other S-800.

It is inspired by the Mark VI soprano, but general consensus seems to be that it plays better than a VI. Yanagisawa is a company that relentlessly improves its design, so it is not surprising that its hand-made S800 has better intonation and evenness of tone across the instrument than the Selmer that it copies. There are of course exceptions, and there are great VI sopranos out there for sure. But this is no step-down from a VI. It is every bit as good.

This is a mint/near mint original Yanagisawa S800 Soprano. It is Mark VI style with a more-comfortable plastic thumb hook. The pads are older but still sealing well, and the horn plays great, with the typical Mark VI tone that so many players love so much on soprano. In case you are not familiar with these horns, Yanagisawa is a Japanese company that makes only saxophones, by hand, and that has been doing so for many decades now. In the 70’s and 80’s their design was heavily influenced by the Selmer Mark VI, and these sopranos are nearly exact copies, with equally good or better build quality than Selmer sopranos of this vintage (gasp!), and often better intonation.

The Elimona and S900 that follow these models are the first to have modern palm keys. This particular horn is the rare and desirable “Prima” version of the S-800, which was also sold with just “Yanagisawa” on the bell (see the museum section of this site for one of those) and also with Martin on the bell. The Prima seems to have been the S800 for the Asian market (at least) and the Martin version was sold by Martin in the USA, but is again the same horn in all respects. So apart from being rare, the Prima is just the same as the other versions of this horn.

The Yanagisawa 880 Series is my favorite for tone out of the various Yanagisawa options. It has more warmth and complexity than the most recent models, but it retains the excellent build quality, modern ergonomics, and dead-on intonation that makes Yanagisawa famous. That said, all of the Yanagisawas are really really good horns, and they all have a great tone. The 880’s just have a bit more warmth in my experience.

This horn is something I’ve never seen before – a modern one-piece Yanagisawa with modern keywork, but stamped “Prima” like the rare version of the older Yanagisawas. It is also silver-plated, which is also very rare. This soprano plays wonderfully, with a rich, resonant tone, excellent intonation and really good ergonomics. It’s like playing a good Mark VI but with modern keywork. Plus it’s very rare in its own right. It ships in the original case in good condition.

To put the whole description in one sentence, in my opinion, this is the best one piece soprano saxophone that is made today, and this one is in mint, like new condition, and has hardly been played at all. It was purchased new only a few years ago and has been meticulously cared for, not even leaving the owner’s house. It is in every way identical to the new ones made today. The Yanagisawa company makes only saxophones, and they make them with a continuous commitment to improvement. Their soprano saxophones are particularly prized for their excellent intonation and warm tone. They also have the best build quality and the best factory setup of any modern saxophone, across the board.

Price just lowered! This is a Yanagisawa S-981 with no past damage and with about 99% of its lacquer. There are a couple of scratches on the LH pinky keys and a little lacquer wear on the thumb hook. This model is the same as the S-991 but without high G key. Pads are in excellent shape and have just been adjusted to be in perfect playing condition. This horn has not been played very much and it is in great shape for many years to come, other things being equal. Both necks are also in mint/near mint condition. It ships in the original case.

This is a beautiful, near mint S-990 with high G key. This horn is in great playing condition and feels nice and snappy under the fingers. The ergonomics and intonation are both excellent, as you expect with Yanagisawa sopranos. The tone is medium bright and lyrical. Clear and round with out being harsh or nasal. It’s an easy horn to listen to, and it’s fun to play.

This is a clean, near mint example of one of the best sopranos ever made. The Yanagisawa S-991 soprano is handmade in Japan in a small, house-sized factory in which all the workers are highly-skilled artists. That makes these horns have the best build-quality of any saxophones made today. This soprano has a great tone – clear, round, with a delicate core. It is very mouthpiece-friendly, so you can make it sound much darker or much more aggressive depending on what piece you use. (And it is worth experimenting with soprano mouthpieces – trust me!) The stock Yanagisawa mouthpiece is a great place to start – dependable, middle-of-the-road tonally, with a quality facing.

Their soprano saxophones are particularly prized for their excellent intonation and warm tone. They also have the best build quality of any modern saxophone, across the board.

This is the S-992 model, which is identical to the S-991 in design. The difference is that the 992 is made of solid bronze, rather than brass. The keys are still brass, giving the horn a beautiful two-tone look. This horn is cosmetically in excellent condition, with only a little wear from use. It was just given a setup with lots of new pads by Matt Stohrer, and it now plays its best with no leaks at all. There are no dents, no dings, no resolders, no past repairs, and no other flaws on the sax. It comes with both original necks which are also in great shape. It ships in the original case in excellent condition.

Inevitably someone will want to know about the difference in sound between 991 and 992. In my experience with a few dozen horns, I would say that the 991 is basically a clear, round tone. The 992 is a little darker and more complex, and perhaps a bit warmer as well. I tend to prefer the 992 a little bit over the 991, but both are really excellent sopranos. These work well with a wide range of mouthpieces, and that is, after all, the most important way to shape the overall tone.

This sax sells for right around $4650 new online, and I am asking a lot less, even though this horn is in great condition AND has had a lot of extra setup work done by an excellent tech. (New horns need this to be done to them in many cases.) That should be a great deal for someone, and it should also make it so that the buyer can either afford to also buy a great mouthpiece (strongly recommended, whether from me or elsewhere) and/or easily get his/her money back out down the road without any trouble, should that become a necessity. After all, used saxophones are not like used cars – they don’t wear out if you take care of them, so used in great shape is just as good as new, only less expensive.

This is a rare and beautiful soprano made by the Yanagisawa company. Yanagisawa makes the best soprano saxophones in the world today, and this is their top-of-the-line model with all the bells and whistles. It is solid bronze, with pink gold plating over the bronze, which is 80% gold, 20% silver. The horn is fully engraved, including both necks. This soprano retails for around $9000+ which is wild. I have this one priced quite a bit lower, even though it is in mint condition with no dents, no dings, no past repairs, and 100% of its original plating intact.

This is a clean example of a vintage Yanagisawa curved soprano saxophone. Yanagisawa makes the best curved sopranos in the world, and this one is no exception. Cosmetically, this horn has no dents or dings or past repairs. It has most of its original lacquer with some wear between bell and body and a few other places. The older pads are still sealing well, and the horn plays well as is. At least some pads will need be replaced soon if you play a lot. The tone is warm and round, with an alto kind of feel to it. The bore of these horns is similar to a Mark VI, so if you have heard a VI soprano, that is the basic idea, but the curved body tube makes it have more body. Curved soprano is lots of fun to play, and this is a very good curved soprano.

There’s not a lot to say about this horn. It’s in virtually mint condition, with only the tiniest of signs that it has been played at all. The SC-991 is the best design of curved soprano ever made, as far as I have seen, with astoundingly good intonation and a nice even scale. It feels more alto-like than a straight soprano, with a bit of resistance when pushed that feels nice to lean into. It’s lots of fun! Original case is also in excellent condition.

Yanagisawa Solid Silver Alto 9930 with Black Lacquer!

Wow, this is a beautiful special order, fully-engraved Yanagisawa 9930 alto. This is one of the rare Yanagisawa altos that is made partly of solid silver instead of brass.

These features make this alto amazingly beautiful, with some of the engraving appearing silver and some appearing gold, depending on whether it cuts into the silver neck and body or the brass bow and bell.

It also sounds great! Yanagisawa altos are very flexible and have a beautiful tone. They work equally well for classical or for jazz playing, depending upon your playing style and your choice of mouthpiece. The keywork is super fast and comfortable, and the intonation is very easy and right in tune across all registers.

The Elimona sopranos and sopraninos from Yanagisawa are really excellent saxophones that combine a more warm and complex tone with the superior build-quality, keywork, and intonation that makes Yanagisawa famous. This is one great sopranino. It is in virtually mint condition, and I am not sure if this is just a gold lacquer finish, or lacquer over gold plate on the body of the horn. The keys are silver (not nickel) and have just been hand polished. The engraving is beautiful as well. The pads are in good condition, and the horn plays great. If you want a great modern sopranino, this horn is way better than a Mark VI or a Series II in every way.

This is one of my favorite modern tenor saxophones, along with the Yamaha 62 Purple label. The T880 has more guts to the sound than some later Yanagisawa tenors, though they are all good. Look for more warmth, a slightly darker tone, and more complexity in the 880 series compared to the modern 991. This horn is in good shape with a few dings and some lacquer wear. It has just gotten an overhaul done by Matt Stohrer (pictures are pre-overhaul) and it plays GREAT. It ships in the original case which is in good condition.

This is a very nice example of a Yanagisawa T-990 with original lacquer and good pads. It plays very well, because it was pro-owned by a picky player. I got it on trade and he was loathe to part with it, except that he fell in love with an expensive Selmer. However this horn was a close second. It has excellent ergonomics, excellent intonation, and a medium bright, clear tone with lots of roundness. This is a fun sax to play, so whoever gets it is going to be happy. In case you haven’t heard of the company at all before, Yanagisawa is known to serious sax players as (arguably) the finest maker of saxophones in the world today. All Yanagisawa saxophones are made by hand in their small factory in Japan, and their build quality is the best all-around that you can get.

Yanagisawa T900u Tenor Saxophone Very Good Condition Fresh Setup 210353

I’m a big fan of the Yanagisawa 800 and 900 series horns, and this is a very good example of why.  This is a very clean, extremely well built (Yanagisawa has arguably the best craftsmanship among modern horns) truly professional quality tenor in good playing condition for barely more than a new Yamaha student model.  The intonation is excellent, the tone is pleasant and full, and the horn itself is built to last. This particular instrument is in very good physical shape, with a few scratches and repaired dings on the bow, but no major (or even medium) physical damage past or present.  You can expect this to be a reliable instrument for however long you own it, and it represents an extremely good value that is hard to beat. If you are looking for a full-on professional quality tenor for less than $2500 that is ready to play, you likely know how hard that can be to actually find- but here it is.

  • Sold OutYanagisawa TWO-010 Tenor Saxophone Near Mint 348515-1

Yanagisawa TWO-010 Tenor Saxophone Near Mint Condition Great Deal!

This is a nearly-new Yanagisawa WO-10, which is Yanagisawa’s current model that replaces the 991 series, taking the same “elite professional” spot in their lineup (the “basic professional” spot being held by the 901 previously and the W0-1 currently) and other than being priced like a used horn, it is basically new.  It appears to have been played very little and comes with its original case showing it was bought as Kessler Music, where they sell new for $4900.

This one appears to be nearly flawless, with just a couple of light scuff marks here and there if I look closely, and it is missing its original mouthpiece that would have come with it.  It plays very well, feeling to have a slightly bigger tone than the 991, and definitely feels lighter and a little more svelte under the fingers than the 991, although it still seems plenty robust.  I’ve seen a few of these since the WO series came out, and besides the confusing branding of of mixing Os and 0s, I really like these horns. Since they are still fairly new, chances to grab one used are few and far between, so I’d be surprised if this one stuck around for too long.  Grab it while you can and enjoy Yanagisawa’s newest professional tenor saxophone at a discount.
