Yanagisawa (Martin) T-800 Tenor Saxophone Worn Original Lacquer
Rare opportunity to buy a professional tenor from one of the ‘big four’ makers for the price of a used student Yamaha 26 tenor. This horn is obviously pretty worn looking. It’s on consignment and it has mostly original (old) pads from around 1980 when it was made. It still plays on them, but would be better with more pads replaced. I just got it cleaned up and tuned up for $150, so it has a basic playing condition job on it. These early 80’s Yanagisawa tenors are just fantastic sounding. Big, fat, warm, in-tune, and ergonomically very comfortable. They’re hard to beat for the money for sure. This one also has some features that anticipate the T880 like some double key arms on low keys.

Yanagisawa A-880 Alto Excellent Condition Aubra Graves’ Horn 117796
The Yanagisawa A-880 is just about my favorite modern alto. Certainly my favorite under $5000. It’s rich, warm, responsive, and in tune. It works with almost any mouthpiece, feels comfortable under the fingers, and has some of the best build quality of any saxophone. The 880 series from the 80’s was Yanagisawa’s top of the line. It has a warmer, more complex tone than the 990/991/WO-10 that came after it. This one is in gorgeous shape. I just got it all tuned up, with some pads replaced and everything ready to go out of the case. It plays great! This horn also comes with signed paperwork from the family of Aubra Graves, attesting that this alto came from his small collection of horns. If you don’t know Aubra’s playing, look him up on YouTube, and get ready to be inspired! The first time I listened to his playing, my jaw must have hit the floor. I just couldn’t believe it. I hope I play half that well in my 80’s and 90’s!

Yanagisawa A-880 Alto Saxophone
This saxophone is sold! Â But click HERE to see our current selection of alto saxophones. The 880 is what I always recommend to people looking for a great modern horn under $2000 that has a tone with a vintage element. This horn has an unusually rich, complex tone that is medium bright and has a nice lyrical, singing quality to it. It has a lot of flexibility according to what mouthpiece you choose, tone wise. The intonation and ergonomics are great, much like all the modern Yanagisawas.

Yanagisawa A-880 Alto Saxophone
This saxophone is sold! Â But click HERE to see our current selection of alto saxophones. This is a really special Yanagisawa Alto saxophone previously owned and played by a pro player who is very picky about his horns. This horn has an unusually rich, complex tone that is medium bright and has a nice lyrical, singing quality to it. It has a lot of flexibility according to what mouthpiece you choose, tone wise. The intonation and ergonomics are great, much like all the modern Yanagisawas.
Cosmetically, this horn is beautiful. It has no dents or dings or resolders, and the original neck is in great condition as well. The lacquer shows some normal wear in the usual places from playing. This horn ships in the original case, and it should make somebody really happy. It’s an outstanding saxophone for any price, and lucky for you, it’s priced very reasonably. -

Yanagisawa A-880 Alto Saxophone
This saxophone is sold! Â But click HERE to see our current selection of alto saxophones. This is a freshly-overhauled 880 alto with a little bit of lacquer wear. If you read around on here, you’ll know that I think that the 880 is one of the best alto saxophones that you can buy for a number of reasons (great tone, great ergonomics, great build quality, great intonation). This horn sings with a medum bright tone with a nice substantial core to it. It has a beefy kind of core to it, and it sounds great for a wide range of styles of music, a lot like a Mark VI. The intonation is excellent, as is the build quality generally. It has a high F#. The ergonomics are modern and very comfortable. This horn will do it all, and it’s quite a bit cheaper than most other altos of this calibre.

This saxophone is sold! Â But click HERE to see our current selection of alto saxophones. The Yanagisawa A-880 is one of my favorite altos of all time, and this is the best 880 that I have played so far. It is just back from Matt Stohrer, who replaced 14 pads and worked his magic generally, so that the horn feels very snappy under the fingers and should be good to go for a long time. This horn has only the lightest of wear. A couple of speckles on the neck, and a spot of wear on the side Bb key are about all that I see. Â I will be sorry to see it go, but I plan on keeping a nice 880 on the site when at-all possible, so check back if this one sells. They are very consistent and very good every time.

The silver plate on this horn is almost all there, but there is some corrosion as well (see pictures). The pads are in excellent condition and almost all of them are new. They were replaced by Matt Stohrer, who does great pad work, so the horn is really in TOP playing condition and feels very good under the fingers. Yanagisawa A-990 Alto Excellent Condition! Plays Great 176857
Absolutely gorgeous example of one of my favorite modern alto saxophones – the Yanagisawa A990 professional alto. By the way – for you parents out there wondering Yah-nuh-gih-sah-wah is how you pronounce it. The 990 is the top of the line model, equivalent to the subsequent A991 and WO-10 models which you will also see around for sale, and also to the A880 which came immediately before. Yanagisawa also makes a slightly less expensive, but also professional line which lacks a few bells and whistles present on this line of instruments, called the A900, A901, and WO-1. It’s not too confusing once you get used to it, but I find that it is confusing to many folks initially when they start shopping for these, both to be confronted with the array of model numbers, and the two parallel lines of professional horns, and the difficult-to-pronounce-confidently-name.
Ok throat clearing how behind us, we turn to this extremely nice example of a Yanagisawa A990 alto. This horn is one-owner, and was very well cared-for. It shows very little use, no wear, and no previous or current damage or past repairs. It’s about as nice as you could ask for. The reason I like these horns a lot, is that the 880 and 990 models have a bit warmer, more complex tone than the 991 and WO-10 do. That extra warmth can give you just a bit of extra depth to the sound, though your choice of mouthpiece and reed will make a larger contribution. Besides that, you won’t find a modern saxophone that is better built than the 880/990/991 Yanagisawa saxophones. That’s because Yanagisawa makes only saxophones, and has been doing so for 90 years. The company is small and highly specialized, and its workers are all master builders, capable of building one of these single-handed, and taking turns on the different steps to keep the work interesting.
So if you’re shopping used saxophones and feeling nervous about upkeep, Yanagisawa is your safest bet, though you’ll also find good build quality on Yamaha pro saxes, and to a lesser extent on Selmer and Keilwerth, both of which tend to need more of a thorough overhaul when they burn through their intial factory setups.
This particular A990 has excellent pads, and plays great on them. It is just freshly tuned up, and responds easily throughout the entire playing range without any trouble. The tone is medium bright, and rich, and will darken down with a classical mouthpiece, or project extra with a higher baffle jazz mouthpiece. You can do what you want with it, because the intonation is good and the horn is not mouthpiece-picky at all. The keywork is comfortable and snappy, and the feel is nice under the fingers. The underslung octave key on these adds some interest to the look of the horn, and also works great as a mechanism.
If you want a horn that just works, dependably, tunes well, sounds great, and gets out of the way so that you can focus on the music, that’s what a Yanagisawa does for you. It’s easy to maintain, with just regular checkups and the occasional cleaning and adjustment. If you happen to be interested, I also have the A880 and the A991 in stock at the moment, and can even get you a great price on a new WO-1 or WO-10 if you email me directly.

Yanagisawa A-990 Alto Saxophone
This saxophone is sold!  But click HERE to see our current selection of alto saxophones. Here is a very nice example of a Yanagisawa A-990 alto saxophone from Yanagisawa. This is Yanagisawa’s top professional model from the 1990’s and it is the predecessor of the current A-991. Sonically, this Yanagisawa is easily as good as any other professional alto saxophone that is being made today. It has amazingly good intonation, and a clear, round, medium bright tone that is suitable for all kinds of different playing situations, from classical to jazz and beyond. I have had several people come over looking at other horns and play this one and say WOW! If I needed an alto, I’d buy this! It is a fantastic player with a very good tone. It’s a deal at this price. Whoever gets this alto will be getting a great deal.

Yanagisawa A-990u A990 Alto Saxophone
This saxophone is sold!  But click HERE to see our current selection of alto saxophones. The earlier Yanagisawa altos are my favorites for tone quality, because they have a bit more character to the sound, and are not purely clear and round. This horn has a great tone that is medium bright with some complexity to it. Of course, all the fundamentals are there like you expect with Yanagisawa: the best ergonomics, excellent keywork and design, near-perfect intonation. This horn has no dents and no resolders. This horn was owned by a picky professional alto player who chose it out of tons of other horns. He traded it to me because he found an expensive tenor he just had to have. So now you have the chance to get one of the good ones! It has the original neck in great condition and it ships in the original case as well.Â

Yanagisawa A880 Alto Saxophone Excellent Condition
This is a beautiful, time capsule Yanagisawa A880 Alto. It’s just about as close to perfect cosmetically as it could be and still be from the 1980’s. The pads are original, so plan on a repad, or get one done through GetASax as part of a purchase if you like (I don’t make any money on overhauls or pad work, but I’m happy to help you get it done.). It plays on the barely-used original pads, but they’re dried out. The Yanagisawa A880 is my favorite Yanagisawa version, because the tone is warmer and more complex than any other model, and the keywork is modern and comfortable, intonation is great. It’s a 10/10 winner of a saxophone. I love the new Yanagisawas as well, but the 880 will always have a special place in my heart. I have one myself!

Yanagisawa A880 Alto Saxophone Excellent Original Condition Great Deal!
This is a very well built professional saxophone that was made in about 1985 by Yanagisawa, a small company in Tokyo that makes only handbuilt professional saxophones. Â The Yanagisawa 880 is not a very well known instrument, and as such can be bought for much less than it is worth. What it is, besides a very good value, is an amazingly well crafted and very durable professional saxophone that will outlast anyone reading this, given proper care. Â
This particular instrument plays well on its original pads, and looks like it was purchased, played for a few years, and then put away  It should continue to play well for a good long while, but plan on repadding it at some point (or have me get that done for you) as the pads, being made of leather and felt, do feel the effects of time even if they are unplayed. Â
This horn is in excellent physical condition, bearing a few small scuffs and scratches here and there from honest use, but it has no evidence of dents or dings, either past or present, and no evidence of any past repairs major or minor. Â It comes with its original, well-fitting case and original mouthpiece (which looks to have been made by Leblanc, who was their US distributor).
This would be a perfect horn for someone looking to get their first professional saxophone, or for a professional player looking for a super solid backup horn. Â It costs less than and is of a higher quality than the modern Taiwanese/Chinese/Vietnamese imports of various names, will last longer, and will hold its value much better.
These horns play very well (this one included) and owning an instrument of such quality craftsmanship is a deeply satisfying experience that deepens the relationship between player and horn. Â

Yanagisawa A880 Alto Saxophone Fresh Overhaul! Great Deal 113836
The Yanagisawa A880 is one of my favorite modern altos. It combines Yanagisawa’s superior build quality, ergonomics and intonation, with a tone that is warmer, more complex and wide than later Yanagisawas. It plays beautifully and feels great, with fully modern keywork. It’s an excellent choice for a top quality modern professional alto in good playing condition that is priced quite reasonably.
This horn has a fresh full overhaul done very nicely, and it feels like a new saxophone under the fingers. It has all new pads, corks, and felts, and it is mechanically tight and really great overall. That’s about a $1k job to overhaul a modern alto like this and do it right, so that’s a big added value for you. It means the horn will not need any significant work besides occasional checkups for many years! The only real past repair on this is the bow guard that was unsoldered to remove a dent at some point. It was done well, and it looks very good. Neck is in great shape, bell flare and body tube are undamaged. And under the fingers, it feels dry and snappy and fast.
The 880 is such a great horn. I have one of these myself in my little collection of my favorite altos of all time. The reason it stands out is that it has some of the warmth and complexity of a vintage saxophone, while handling like a Lexus and tuning super easily.
I’m also including the nice contoured case with this one. It has backpack straps and is nice and light for carrying.

Yanagisawa A880B Alto Black Lacquer My Favorite! 118255
As I’ve said many times, the Yanagisawa 880 saxophones are a real sweet spot among modern altos, because they have a warmer, more complex tone than more recent altos, but they have the modern keywork and excellent build quality and intonation of a modern Yanagisawa. For you parents out there, it’s pronounced YAH-nuh-gih-SAH-wah. Yanagisawa is a specialized company that has been making nothing but professional saxophones for at least 75 years now, and really top quality ones for at least the last 40 years. You won’t find a better built alto than this. It holds up well, holds its value well, plays great, and looks great. Plus it’s really not that expensive.
This particular one has two special things going on, that, to me, make it worth a little more than an average one. I have a couple of less expensive Yanagisawa altos at any given time (as of Dec 2022, a nice used A901 and A902 are both cheaper than this), but the 880 is the top level of their altos (compare to A991 or AWO10), and this one has the rare black lacquer finish with engraving cut through to the brass, and it also has the cool brass emblem patch on the bell, which I often covet in my own Yanagisawa saxophones. The tone is warm, pleasant, fairly complex, and lyrical, and this horn also has no signficant damage, and the current pads are sealing well. It plays great, and should make anybody happy who wants a beautiful modern alto that has a little something extra about it.
Only one available! (I also have some special Yanagisawa necks available by request, if you want to complete the package with a gold plated or solid silver, fully engraved Yanagisawa neck that really turns some heads, though it plays extremely well on the original neck. That would just be an indulgence, but one that I would probably spring for myself if I kept this to play as my main alto.)

Yanagisawa A901 Alto Excellent Condition Great Deal 318710
The Yanagisawa A901 is one of my favorite modern altos at any price. And it also happens to be amazingly affordable. I mean, this is almost the price of a student level Yamaha, for a pro Yanagisawa that has the best build quality of any modern saxophone maker. Yanagisawa is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, and it has been making only professional saxophones for all of that time! Impressive. The 901 is the equivalent of the AWO-1 (which will cost you $3500 or so new online). And I like the 901 easily as well as the WO-1 if not better. It has a crisp, clean, projecting tone that is great for classical with a dark mouthpiece, or ideal for jazz with a brighter mouthpiece. It’s pretty hard to beat! This one is in extremely clean condition, and has been babied for its entire life so far. It shows nearly no wear, and plays great!

Yanagisawa A901 Alto Excellent Condition Plays Great 259808
This Yanagisawa A901 alto is in excellent condition, very good pad condition, and plays effortlessly. The A901 has been one of my top recommendations for a modern alto saxophone for many years, and it remains an unbeatable value. It’s a fully professional alto that is built in Japan to the highest standards (my repairman says Yanagisawa is the best built saxophone in the world), but it’s priced the same as if you bought a new Yamaha 26 student alto made in China. That’s wild. It’s a fully pro horn that won’t really depreciate at all, for the price of a student horn. The intonation is great, tone is medium between bright and dark, and can go in either a classical/concert band or a jazz/pop direction depending entirely on what mouthpiece you use. This one has just a little bit of wear from use, but nothing significant, and it’s ready to play for a long time with only minor periodic checkups, just like any saxophone. If you want a do-it-all alto for an affordable price, that is fully professional and built to last, this is it! It holds its value well too, which is nice for parents.

Yanagisawa A901 Professional Alto Very Good Condition Just Setup! 230760
The Yanagisawa A901 is a wonderful professional alto saxophone from Yanagisawa, that basically does everything really well. This one is in excellent condition and the pads are also in great shape. I just got it completely checked out and tuned up, and it is playing its best on pads that will last a long time without needing anything other than occasional checkups like any saxophone. The A901 is the same as the current model AWO1, which is the less expensive pro model. The two lines of Yanagisawa saxophones play basically the same, but the WO1/A901 has the regular neck octave key, single key arms on bell keys, and ‘post construction’ like most saxophones, where the posts that hold the keys are mounted on the body tube, rather than on a stiff metal rib that is then soldered to the body tube. I think this makes the 90x WOx horns play slightly with a little more of that lively feel of vibrating under the fingers, other things being equal. So not a big difference between this and he more expensive WO10.

It has original black lacquer with engraving cut through the black into the brass, giving the horn a beautiful two tone look. This horn just got tuned up thoroughly by Matt Stohrer, and it plays extremely well. I like the 901 the best of the modern Yanagisawa saxophones. It has a freer vibrating body tube than the 991, and it has a big, medium bright, open tone that works great for a range of playing settings. You can darken it up with a classical style mouthpiece, or you can brighten it up easily for jazz. Intonation and ergonomics are excellent. This horn is super well-built. Yanagisawa has the best build quality of any modern saxophone, and it will really hold up well over time.
Only one available! This is a rare finish, and turns heads. I also have a fancy $1000 gold plated Yanagisawa neck I could throw in for $500, and a solid silver Yanagisawa alto neck I could include for $500 also.

Yanagisawa AWO-37 Alto New! Elite Professional Solid Silver with Deluxe Engraving
$ 9,350The best of the best from Yanagisawa, the AWO37 in solid silver with full engraving can’t be beat. These are rare, collectible, and usually you have to wait while your special order is filled slowly. I ordered this one 6 months ago and it’s finally here. It also got a thorough new horn checkup when it came it, to make sure that it plays as perfectly as possible! Price is great. You could pay way more and get one without the new horn setup (which makes a significant difference, even on well-built Yanagisawas!).

Yanagisawa AWO1 Professional Alto Saxophone New + Setup – Fantastic Deal! A901
New in the plastic Yanagisawa AWO1 Alto saxophone. This is probably the best deal overall in a modern alto, period. This horn just got checked out post shipping and is ready to play its very best right out of the case when you get it. It’s completely mint, with factory box and paperwork etc. You won’t find a better playing Yanagisawa AWO1 Alto Saxophone, nor will you find a better price. I have an extremely limited number of these that I can offer you at this sale price. Good luck to the few people who are able to jump on this deal!
If you’re wondering, the AWO1 is the brass version of Yanagisawa’s professional alto. This is the new name of what used to be the A901 model. It has a more open and vibrating feel than the heavier-built AWO10 (which is also a fantastic alto, but more expensive). My first good alto was one of these. If you want the best alto for the money, that would be the Yanagisawa AWO1. And when you go to re-sell it, you can get most to all of your money back, which is the opposite of most new saxophones.
Any questions, feel free to ask!

Yanagisawa AWO10 Alto 397193 Excellent Condition Plays Great!
Excellent to near mint Yanagisawa AWO10 Alto was only played for 4 months before the owner traded it in on a Selmer Mark VI alto. So you can get an ‘elite’ Yanagisawa AWO10 Alto Saxophone for a nice little discount. This horn looks nearly new, but only has a tiny bit of lacquer wear on the thumb rest. It got the GetASax new horn checkup when it sold new in May, and it still plays effortlessly, like new, and possibly a little better since the pads are just slightly broken in.
Here’s my standard new horn description on the AWO10 as a supplement to the above:
The AWO10 (formerly called A991) is Yanagisawa’s top of the line saxophone, made of solid brass, like most saxophones (as distinguished from their bronze and silver options that are significantly more expensive.)  This AWO10 just got checked out post shipping and is ready to play its very best right out of the case when you get it. It’s completely mint, with factory box and paperwork etc. You won’t find a better playing Yanagisawa AWO10, nor will you find a better price. I have an extremely limited number of these that I can offer you at this sale price. Good luck to the few people who are able to jump on this amazing deal!
If you’re wondering, the AWO10 is the brass version of Yanagisawa’s top line professional alto. This is the new name of what used to be the A991 model. It has sturdier ‘ribbed construction’ and double arms on the bell keys, to distinguish it from its extremely similar but less expensive sibling, the AWO1 (A901). The Yanagisawa AWO10 also has the underslung neck octave key mechanism and fancy hand engraving. I love how the neck octave key looks and works. My first good alto was a Yanagisawa, and I never would have needed to upgrade from it. The tone is medium bright, clear, and round, with a crisp projection to it. With a classical mouthpiece, it darkens up beautifully while still shimmering. For jazz, it’s a natural lead alto with a brighter mouthpiece, like the GS New York or many others. The intonation is excellent. Keywork is super comfortable. The build quality that Yanagisawa offers is the best of any saxophone, and yet the price is lower than many of its competitors. That’s why Yanagisawa is SO popular among pro sax players, and why its saxophones are often back ordered with long waits. Here’s your chance to grab one at a SUPER price that is all setup and ready to go for many years making beautiful music dependably. It’s the Lexus of modern saxophones, and it just makes playing effortless.
Any questions, feel free to ask!

Yanagisawa AWO2 Solid Bronze Alto Saxophone Brand New + Setup! A902
$ 3,750Two available March 2023, and they’ve both been setup and play GREAT!
Brand new, unplayed, in the plastic Yanagisawa AWO2 Alto saxophone. This is probably the best deal overall in a modern alto period. This horn just got checked out post shipping and is ready to play its very best right out of the case when you get it. It’s completely mint, with factory box and paperwork etc. You won’t find a better playing Yanagisawa AWO2, nor will you find a better price. I have an extremely limited number of these that I can offer you at this sale price. Good luck to the few people who are able to jump on this amazing deal!
If you’re wondering, the WO2 is the bronze version of Yanagisawa’s professional alto. This is the new name of what used to be the A902 model. It has a more open and vibrating feel than the heavier-built AWO20 (which is also a fantastic alto, but more expensive). My first good alto was one of these. And the solid bronze adds more depth and complexity to the tone – kind of a thick heart to the core of the tone. It’s quite easy to hear once you get used to it and play the different Yanagisawa saxophones. The AWO2 (A902) and AWO20 (A992) are my favorites, closely followed by AWO1 (A901) and AWO10 (A991) (same horns but in brass instead of bronze).

One available now Sept 23, 2022
Mint, unplayed, new in the plastic Yanagisawa AWO20 Alto saxophone. This is probably the best deal on this saxophone that you will find anywhere.  The AWO20 (formerly called A992) is the best horn that Yanagisawa makes in my opinion (I prefer it to the solid silver ones.) This AWO20 just got checked out post shipping and is ready to play its very best right out of the case when you get it. It’s completely mint, with factory box and paperwork etc. You won’t find a better playing Yanagisawa AWO2o, nor will you find a better price. This horn has just had almost all its pads replaced so it is definitely playing GREAT and ready to go. The neck receiver has been replaced with an OEM Yanagisawa part, because it was not sealing perfectly. This horn plays great with a big rich sound, and you can easily subtone down to low A.

Yanagisawa B-901 Baritone Saxophone
This saxophone is sold!  But click here to see our current selection of baritone and bass saxophones.Yanagisawa is making some wonderful saxophones these days, and their sopranos and baritones are particularly great. This is a B901 bari in excellent condition. It has had a small dent removed from the bell flare, and there is some very light lacquer wear in a few places. Other than that, the horn is near mint, with no dents, dings, or past repairs. I am a big fan of Yanagisawa baris – they have amazingly good intonation across all three octaves, and the tone is warm, clear, and flexible. You can sound vintage with an older mouthpiece, or play R&B or funk just by swapping to a different mouthpiece. Ergonomics are very comfortable, and the horn feels light for being a low A.

Yanagisawa B-992 Solid Bronze Baritone Like New
This saxophone is sold! Â But click here to see our current selection of baritone and bass saxophones. This is a like new Yanagisawa B-992. It has never been played except to describe it just now. It’s exactly like a new one, but without the 6-month wait from Yanagisawa. This is just about the ultimate modern bari imaginable. The solid bronze really darkens and complexifies the sound (my experience is that the base metal definitely does affect the sound of saxophones in a clearly demonstrable and repeatable way – I currently have a full set of 992’s and the trend is very obvious).

Yanagisawa BWO1 Baritone Saxophone Brand New Fantastic Deal!
Brand new Yanagisawa BWO1 professional baritone saxophone that is here and in stock now, ready to ship. These are backordered almost everywhere, whether it says that when you checkout or not. Good luck getting one from the places I find when I google this model. They’re not actually there – if you get one elsewhere, you will likely have to wait for it to be manufactured and then drop shipped from overseas. Which isn’t what you really want when buying a saxophone this big. You want a shop to do a new horn checkup on it, like this one got, and make sure everything is playing perfectly and setup properly, so that you get the full joy of playing a brand new baritone saxophone. The low register experience is incomparable – the low Bb and A just come out like any other note! Intonation is fantastic. Ergonomics likewise.
Unfortunately there is only one available. So once that’s sold, it may be some time before I get another one, with the long backorders there are for new Yanagisawa saxophones at present.

This one is about as nice as you’d be likely to find. It plays beautifully! It has been well cared-for and will be easy to own and will continue to play beautifully for many years to come! Yanagisawa saxophones have become hard to find in good used condition lately, as the new ones are now about a year backordered for most varieties. This will continue to be the case because of their popularity and high quality. And prices will continue to rise as a result. This is a rare chance to get their high end curved soprano for a lot less than the new price, in excellent condition!

Yanagisawa S-800 Soprano Saxophone Martin
This saxophone is sold!  But click here to see our current selection of soprano and sopranino saxophones! The Yanagisawa S6 and S800 are very similar models of saxophone. While some people will try to distinguish them by palm keys, both horns have VI style inline palm keys. The Elimona and S900 that follow these models are the first to have modern palm keys. This particular horn is the Martin version that was sold by Martin in the USA, but is the same as any other S-800.
It is inspired by the Mark VI soprano, but general consensus seems to be that it plays better than a VI. Yanagisawa is a company that relentlessly improves its design, so it is not surprising that its hand-made S800 has better intonation and evenness of tone across the instrument than the Selmer that it copies. There are of course exceptions, and there are great VI sopranos out there for sure. But this is no step-down from a VI. It is every bit as good.

Yanagisawa S-800 Soprano Saxophone Mint
This saxophone is sold! Â But click here to see our current selection of soprano and sopranino saxophones! This is a mint/near mint original Yanagisawa S800 Soprano. It is Mark VI style with a more-comfortable plastic thumb hook. The pads are older but still sealing well, and the horn plays great, with the typical Mark VI tone that so many players love so much on soprano. In case you are not familiar with these horns, Yanagisawa is a Japanese company that makes only saxophones, by hand, and that has been doing so for many decades now. In the 70’s and 80’s their design was heavily influenced by the Selmer Mark VI, and these sopranos are nearly exact copies, with equally good or better build quality than Selmer sopranos of this vintage (gasp!), and often better intonation.

Yanagisawa S-800 Soprano Saxophone S6 Prima

While some people will try to distinguish them by palm keys, both horns have VI style inline palm keys. The Elimona and S900 that follow these models are the first to have modern palm keys. This particular horn is the rare and desirable “Prima” version of the S-800, which was also sold with just “Yanagisawa” on the bell (see the museum section of this site for one of those) and also with Martin on the bell. The Prima seems to have been the S800 for the Asian market (at least) and the Martin version was sold by Martin in the USA, but is again the same horn in all respects. So apart from being rare, the Prima is just the same as the other versions of this horn.

Yanagisawa S-880 Soprano Saxophone
This saxophone is sold! Â But click here to see our current selection of soprano and sopranino saxophones! The Yanagisawa 880 Series is my favorite for tone out of the various Yanagisawa options. It has more warmth and complexity than the most recent models, but it retains the excellent build quality, modern ergonomics, and dead-on intonation that makes Yanagisawa famous. That said, all of the Yanagisawas are really really good horns, and they all have a great tone. The 880’s just have a bit more warmth in my experience.

It’s like playing a good Mark VI but with modern keywork. Plus it’s very rare in its own right. It ships in the original case in good condition.

But click here to see our current selection of soprano and sopranino saxophones! To put the whole description in one sentence, in my opinion, this is the best one piece soprano saxophone that is made today, and this one is in mint, like new condition, and has hardly been played at all. It was purchased new only a few years ago and has been meticulously cared for, not even leaving the owner’s house. It is in every way identical to the new ones made today. The Yanagisawa company makes only saxophones, and they make them with a continuous commitment to improvement. Their soprano saxophones are particularly prized for their excellent intonation and warm tone. They also have the best build quality and the best factory setup of any modern saxophone, across the board.

Yanagisawa S-991 Soprano Saxophone
This saxophone is sold! Â But click here to see our current selection of soprano and sopranino saxophones! This is a clean, near mint example of one of the best sopranos ever made. The Yanagisawa S-991 soprano is handmade in Japan in a small, house-sized factory in which all the workers are highly-skilled artists. That makes these horns have the best build-quality of any saxophones made today. This soprano has a great tone – clear, round, with a delicate core. It is very mouthpiece-friendly, so you can make it sound much darker or much more aggressive depending on what piece you use. (And it is worth experimenting with soprano mouthpieces – trust me!) The stock Yanagisawa mouthpiece is a great place to start – dependable, middle-of-the-road tonally, with a quality facing.

Yanagisawa S-992 Soprano Saxophone Solid Bronze!
To put the whole description in one sentence, in my opinion, this is the best soprano saxophone that is made today. The Yanagisawa company makes only saxophones, and they make them with a continuous commitment to improvement. Their soprano saxophones are particularly prized for their excellent intonation and warm tone. They also have the best build quality of any modern saxophone, across the board.
This is the S-992 model, which is identical to the S-991 in design. The difference is that the 992 is made of solid bronze, rather than brass. The keys are still brass, giving the horn a beautiful two-tone look. This horn is cosmetically in excellent condition, with only a little wear from use. It was just given a setup with lots of new pads by Matt Stohrer, and it now plays its best with no leaks at all. There are no dents, no dings, no resolders, no past repairs, and no other flaws on the sax. It comes with both original necks which are also in great shape. It ships in the original case in excellent condition.
Inevitably someone will want to know about the difference in sound between 991 and 992. In my experience with a few dozen horns, I would say that the 991 is basically a clear, round tone. The 992 is a little darker and more complex, and perhaps a bit warmer as well. I tend to prefer the 992 a little bit over the 991, but both are really excellent sopranos. These work well with a wide range of mouthpieces, and that is, after all, the most important way to shape the overall tone.
This sax sells for right around $4650 new online, and I am asking a lot less, even though this horn is in great condition AND has had a lot of extra setup work done by an excellent tech. (New horns need this to be done to them in many cases.) That should be a great deal for someone, and it should also make it so that the buyer can either afford to also buy a great mouthpiece (strongly recommended, whether from me or elsewhere) and/or easily get his/her money back out down the road without any trouble, should that become a necessity. After all, used saxophones are not like used cars – they don’t wear out if you take care of them, so used in great shape is just as good as new, only less expensive.

It is solid bronze, with pink gold plating over the bronze, which is 80% gold, 20% silver. The horn is fully engraved, including both necks. This soprano retails for around $9000+ which is wild.
