To put the whole description in one sentence, in my opinion, this is the best soprano saxophone that is made today. The Yanagisawa company makes only saxophones, and they make them with a continuous commitment to improvement. Their soprano saxophones are particularly prized for their excellent intonation and warm tone. They also have the best build quality of any modern saxophone, across the board.

Yanagisawa S-992 Soprano Saxophone Solid Bronze!

This is the S-992 model, which is identical to the S-991 in design. The difference is that the 992 is made of solid bronze, rather than brass. The keys are still brass, giving the horn a beautiful two-tone look. This horn is cosmetically in excellent condition, with only a little wear from use. It was just given a setup with lots of new pads by Matt Stohrer, and it now plays its best with no leaks at all. There are no dents, no dings, no resolders, no past repairs, and no other flaws on the sax. It comes with both original necks which are also in great shape. It ships in the original case in excellent condition.

Inevitably someone will want to know about the difference in sound between 991 and 992. In my experience with a few dozen horns, I would say that the 991 is basically a clear, round tone. The 992 is a little darker and more complex, and perhaps a bit warmer as well. I tend to prefer the 992 a little bit over the 991, but both are really excellent sopranos. These work well with a wide range of mouthpieces, and that is, after all, the most important way to shape the overall tone.

This sax sells for right around $4650 new online, and I am asking a lot less, even though this horn is in great condition AND has had a lot of extra setup work done by an excellent tech. (New horns need this to be done to them in many cases.) That should be a great deal for someone, and it should also make it so that the buyer can either afford to also buy a great mouthpiece (strongly recommended, whether from me or elsewhere) and/or easily get his/her money back out down the road without any trouble, should that become a necessity. After all, used saxophones are not like used cars – they don’t wear out if you take care of them, so used in great shape is just as good as new, only less expensive.

This is a rare and beautiful soprano made by the Yanagisawa company. Yanagisawa makes the best soprano saxophones in the world today, and this is their top-of-the-line model with all the bells and whistles. It is solid bronze, with pink gold plating over the bronze, which is 80% gold, 20% silver. The horn is fully engraved, including both necks. This soprano retails for around $9000+ which is wild. I have this one priced quite a bit lower, even though it is in mint condition with no dents, no dings, no past repairs, and 100% of its original plating intact.

Yanagisawa S6 Soprano Selmer Mark VI Copy 473961

Yanagisawa S-6 soprano in good condition. The lacquer is fairly worn and the pads are older, but it’s a great price! These are copies of a Mark VI soprano, and they actually play better than the original in many cases! The intonation is better, and the keywork is built just as well. If you want that brassy, projecting soprano tone like Kenny G gets, or the thin, oboe-like tone that John Coltrane gets, those are both the direction these horns lean. (You’d need the right mouthpiece and a lot of practice to actually sound like those players stylistically, but the tone goes in that direction naturally.)

Yanagisawa S901 Soprano Excellent Condition Great Player

One of the best sopranos on the market, fully professional quality. This beautiful Yanagisawa S901 soprano is in excellent condition, barely used, and comes to you in top playing condition, for a discount price. What’s not to love? You can’t beat Yanagisawa for build quality, intonation, and feel. And coming in at this kind of price, it beats even intermediate sopranos of other brands. As you probably know the S901 is the professional soprano that is one piece, where the S991 is the more expensive two neck version. The one piece version like this feels a bit lighter and has a nice resonant vibration to it when you play louder volumes. I love the tone of these as well, and they tune with most mouthpieces.

Yanagisawa S990 High G Soprano Saxophone Exceptional! 201090

Just about my favorite soprano ever. It’s hard to beat these Yanagisawas from the 90’s with the high G key. They play warmer and more complex than the modern Yanagisawas, and this is just about the nicest, most perfect one I have seen. It just got tuned up and it’s ready to go on a mix of pads. The original pads are mostly present, as it hasn’t been played a lot.

I use the slightly curved neck, because it brings the weight of the horn down onto the neck strap. The keywork is super comfortable. The tuning is great. Tone is beautiful and balanced. You really can’t beat these horns, almost regardless of price. I like the modern EXHG by Yamaha a lot too, but the S990 high G will always have preeminence in my heart.

Yanagisawa S990 Soprano Saxophone Elimona High G RARE 181231

This soprano is something of a unicorn. I had ONE other of these many years ago, and I still miss it. I’m sorely tempted to keep this one this time around. It’s the desirable Elimona verision of the soprano, with the cool metal badge on the bell (bring this back, Yanagisawa!!), but it also has the high G key. That’s what makes it a unicorn. You might see an S880 or S990 with the Elimona badge a handful of times per year, but that plus the high G key is very uncommon. It also happens to be, in my opinion, the best playing Yanagisawa soprano made to date. The new Yanagisawa sopranos are still wonderful, and still represent the best value in the market on a new soprano, but the S990’s have a warmth and complexity that is less evident in the newer sopranos (991, WO). So you get the great Yanagisawa build quality, the dependable intonation, easy ergonomics, AND you also get a richer, more interesting tone, and the rarity factor and convienience of having a high G. That makes this soprano a no-brainer for someone I’m sure.

It is in excellent to near mint condition, with no past repairs, pads still in good shape, both necks looking great, and the nice original case as well.

Yanagisawa S990 Soprano Saxophone High G Very Good Condition 210471

Used Yanagisawa S990 soprano saxophone in very good condition. This one has the high G key! the S990 sounds a bit warmer and more rich than the S991/SWO10, which I like. This particular soprano is in very goood cosmetic and physical condition. It has been played some, and the pads are original, so plan on getting some pads replaced for it to play its very best. In particular, the palm key pads will need replacing, along with some lower stack pads probably cleaned at least. This soprano is on consignment for a good past customer, and I haven’t done any work on it for that reason. However, I did reduce the price so that you can easily get it tuned up when you receive it.

It plays very well currently, and has a beautiful, rich, bell-like tone that is medium between bright and dark. Intonation is very good. I actually love the included Yanagisawa hard rubber soprano mouthpiece (5 tip). It’s easy to play, responds well, tunes great, and has a rich tone. Great first (or last) soprano mouthpiece if you don’t already have one, and it’s included in the price. This sax has both necks, straight and semicurved. The semicurved neck puts the weight of the horn on the neckstrap instead of on your thumb, which is a big improvement over a fully straight soprano in my opinion. These sopranos are hard to find in good shape, and this one is quite nice.

This is a clean example of a vintage Yanagisawa curved soprano saxophone. Yanagisawa makes the best curved sopranos in the world, and this one is no exception. Cosmetically, this horn has no dents or dings or past repairs. It has most of its original lacquer with some wear between bell and body and a few other places. The older pads are still sealing well, and the horn plays well as is. At least some pads will need be replaced soon if you play a lot. The tone is warm and round, with an alto kind of feel to it. The bore of these horns is similar to a Mark VI, so if you have heard a VI soprano, that is the basic idea, but the curved body tube makes it have more body. Curved soprano is lots of fun to play, and this is a very good curved soprano.

Yanagisawa SC-800 Curved Soprano Saxophone 129593 Great Deal

Beautiful example of a Yanagisawa curved soprano saxophone. This beauty has good pads, and has some removable key risers to aid ergonomics on the palm keys especially. I’m leaving them, because I find they help, but your repair shop can pop them off for you if you like. The SC800 like this has a warm, rich tone that you don’t find on modern sopranos, yet it also has pretty good intonation, which is not the case on most curved sopranos (or sopranos in general). It has a nice little ProTec case that will fit inside a backpack or suitcase with ease. This would be a fun travel saxophone, or just a fun soprano to use for anything. The curved setup means you can hear yourself much better than trying to bounce the sound off a wall on straight soprano. it also feels light to hold and hangs well on a strap.

There’s not a lot to say about this horn. It’s in virtually mint condition, with only the tiniest of signs that it has been played at all. The SC-991 is the best design of curved soprano ever made, as far as I have seen, with astoundingly good intonation and a nice even scale. It feels more alto-like than a straight soprano, with a bit of resistance when pushed that feels nice to lean into. It’s lots of fun! Original case is also in excellent condition.

Here is a rare horn to see for sale used. The Yanagisawa SC991 is widely held to be the best curved soprano saxophone ever made. It has the best ergonomics and the best intonation of any curved soprano. The tone is really rich and pleasant as well. I have to tell you that this is a really fun horn to play, and as it is my only soprano in stock right now, I will be especially sad to see it go.

To put it succinctly, this is the best curved soprano model that has been made ever. The Yanagisawa company makes only saxophones, and they make them with a continuous commitment to improvement. Their soprano saxophones are particularly prized for their excellent intonation and warm tone, and for curved soprano, Yanagisawa is really the only viable option for a modern pro horn.

Yanagisawa SC-9930 Curved Soprano Saxophone with High G! Rare

For those of you who love to have the best and rarest at the same time, here is my favorite vintage of curved soprano ever made, the Yanagisawa SC-991, but this is in the solid silver neck and body tube version, which is SC-9930, AND it is one of the rare ones that came with the high G key included. This is the first one like this that I have seen, and it’s cool in a nerdy kind of way to have such a rare and fabulous example. You can order a new SC-9930 for $6730, but your extra $$$ won’t get you the high G! Nor will it be the warmer, fuller-sounding version from the 90’s like this with the bell keys on the left. My personal soprano is one just like this but brass, and I think it sounds better than the right hand bell keys version at least by a little bit. I also like the more direct action that you get with the pinky keys on the left hand bell key configuration. We’re splitting hairs here, but hey, if you’re in the rarified territory of exceptional curved sopranos, then maybe that’s your thing too.

Condition wise, this SC-9930 is in very good shape, with no significant past repairs or current problems at all. I have not spent any money on pad work yet, as I’m trying to keep the price as low as possible, and the horn plays fine on current pads. I would like to sell it a little higher and spend maybe $250 on a thorough setup, so you can have that as an optional extra if you want.

Original case and mouthpiece are in good shape as well. There is most certainly only one of these available!

Yanagisawa Solid Silver Alto 9930 with Black Lacquer!

Wow, this is a beautiful special order, fully-engraved Yanagisawa 9930 alto. This is one of the rare Yanagisawa altos that is made partly of solid silver instead of brass.

These features make this alto amazingly beautiful, with some of the engraving appearing silver and some appearing gold, depending on whether it cuts into the silver neck and body or the brass bow and bell.

It also sounds great! Yanagisawa altos are very flexible and have a beautiful tone. They work equally well for classical or for jazz playing, depending upon your playing style and your choice of mouthpiece. The keywork is super fast and comfortable, and the intonation is very easy and right in tune across all registers.

This is a beautiful, handmade Yanagisawa sopranino. If you don’t know Yanagisawa, they are a small, family-owned business in Japan made up of well-paid, highly-skilled craftsmen and women who make the best-built saxophones on the planet today. This is a very clean example of an 80’s Yangagisawa sopranino in excellent condition. It looks great, with basically all its original lacquer intact. There is also no past or current damage. It sounds great. Really rich, warm, and pleasant. (Especially in the lower and middle registers- haha!). This is an easy purchase for a beautiful, rare, and great-playing vintage saxophone. Get it now – there’s only one available!

The Elimona sopranos and sopraninos from Yanagisawa are really excellent saxophones that combine a more warm and complex tone with the superior build-quality, keywork, and intonation that makes Yanagisawa famous. This is one great sopranino. It is in virtually mint condition, and I am not sure if this is just a gold lacquer finish, or lacquer over gold plate on the body of the horn. The keys are silver (not nickel) and have just been hand polished. The engraving is beautiful as well. The pads are in good condition, and the horn plays great. If you want a great modern sopranino, this horn is way better than a Mark VI or a Series II in every way.

Yanagisawa SWO1 Professional Soprano Saxophone Brand New

One available to ship now!! The Yanagisawa S-WO1 Soprano saxophone is probably the best quality soprano saxophone that you can get new in this price range, bar none. This one is IN STOCK (not a drop ship situation) and it has been checked out, setup, and tested, and comes to you brand new and playing its best right out of the case. My first nice saxophone was a Yanagisawa, and I continue to have a strong appreciation for the quality that you get per dollar on Yanagisawa instruments. They are precision crafted in a small factory of highly skilled and fairly paid workers in Japan. All the workers can do each step of the assembly (except for engraving) and they take turns making different parts of the horn at different times of the year. That means every single person who built this is skilled enough to build an entire saxophone him or herself. I don’t know of any other maker that has as good build quality as Yanagisawa consistently delivers year in, year out. The intonation is excellent. The ergonomics are comfortable. Tone is beautiful, and you can pick almost any mouthpiece you want, to change the tone, and it will still work well. Most sopranos are much more mouthpiece-picky (I’m looking at you, Selmer). It’s really pleasant to be able to buy a brand new soprano that has been checked out by GetASax (we’re picky) and is also a bargain price. With these sopranos sold out all over the USA, this deal hard to beat! We can only get a small number of these Yanagisawa sopranos in at this price, and this is currently the only one available! The factory mouthpiece is also quite good, so you don’t even have to budget for a nicer mouthpiece. No tax outside of NC. Shipping is quite affordable. Grab it!

Yanagisawa SWO2 Solid Bronze Professional Soprano Saxophone New! + Setup

                      One just in!!

This is a new Yanagisawa SWO2 Soprano saxophone in solid bronze. The one piece solid bronze Yanagisawa SWO-2 soprano is one of my favorite modern soprano saxophones of all. It has a noticeably darker, more complex tone than the SWO1, so to me, it’s worth the extra money to spring for the bronze on soprano. The one piece design means no neck socket to leak, and the horn resonates beautifully under your fingers when you play. It tunes beautifully as well. The keywork feels great under the fingers – dry and snappy. Yanagisawa has the best build quality of any modern saxophone, and it shows. Plus I get all new Yanagisawa saxophones checked out pre-sale by one of my excellent repairmen, so that any tiny improvements that will take it from good to great are done before you get it. This is a surprisingly big deal, and something you want to have done, regardless of where you happen to buy a new saxophone. A couple of tiny, smart fixes often take an already good horn into the exceptional category.

If you’ve been thinking of getting a soprano, then Yanagisawa is really a great choice. These are precision instruments that are built to last and that sound beautiful. They work with a wide range of mouthpieces (Selmer sopranos are more ‘mouthpiece picky’), which is nice because you can shape the tone with mouthpiece choice a LOT.

I have an extremely limited availability of these Yanagisawa saxophones, but ONE SWO2 is currently available as of November 2022. Whoever gets it will be one lucky saxophonist!

This is one of my favorite modern tenor saxophones, along with the Yamaha 62 Purple label. The T880 has more guts to the sound than some later Yanagisawa tenors, though they are all good. Look for more warmth, a slightly darker tone, and more complexity in the 880 series compared to the modern 991. This horn is in good shape with a few dings and some lacquer wear. It has just gotten an overhaul done by Matt Stohrer (pictures are pre-overhaul) and it plays GREAT. It ships in the original case which is in good condition.

This is an excellent example of one of my favorite modern tenors. It’s a Yanagisawa T-880, which has ribbed construction and double bell key arms for extra stability. It took me 2 years to find one in this kind of condition. Most of them that you find have been around the block a couple of times.

This horn has “Martin” on the bell, but it is 100% identical to any other T-880 and should be valued as such. But lucky for you, the word “Martin” knocks several hundred dollars off of the price for no reason! This horn includes a Boesken SBA-style boutique neck that further enhances the horn’s tonal complexity, response, and altissimo.

This is a very nice example of a Yanagisawa T-990 with original lacquer and good pads. It plays very well, because it was pro-owned by a picky player. I got it on trade and he was loathe to part with it, except that he fell in love with an expensive Selmer. However this horn was a close second. It has excellent ergonomics, excellent intonation, and a medium bright, clear tone with lots of roundness. This is a fun sax to play, so whoever gets it is going to be happy. It ships in the original case which is in good (not great) condition.

This is an excellent example of a Yanagisawa T-990 tenor saxophone. The 990 is nearly identical to the current production 991 tenor that is Yanagisawa’s top-of-the-line design. In case you haven’t heard of the company at all before, Yanagisawa is known to serious sax players as (arguably) the finest maker of saxophones in the world today. All Yanagisawa saxophones are made by hand in their small factory in Japan, and their build quality is the best all-around that you can get.

This is a near mint Yanagisawa T991 Tenor sax with great pads, just put into perfect playing condition, and ready to go. It has original everything and it sounds great. Excellent ergonomics, excellent intonation, response, and feel. The tone is medium bright, clear and round.

Like a modern Yamaha, but a little bit better built (Yanagisawa only does saxophones) and more fun to play, this horn is a do-it-all kind of machine. It melds easily with a range of mouthpieces, and it brings its own bit of character to the sound without over-determining it in one direction or another.

This horn is cosmetically in excellent condition, and does not appear to have been played much. There are no dents, no dings, and it looks great throughout. It has just been tuned up and plays well! The bronze and solid silver Yanagisawa tenors are among the best tenor saxophones made today. I’m a big fan of the Yanagisawa 800 and 900 series horns, and this is a very good example of why.  This is a very clean, extremely well built (Yanagisawa has arguably the best craftsmanship among modern horns) truly professional quality tenor in good playing condition for barely more than a new Yamaha student model.  The intonation is excellent, the tone is pleasant and full, and the horn itself is built to last. This particular instrument is in very good physical shape, with a few scratches and repaired dings on the bow, but no major (or even medium) physical damage past or present.  You can expect this to be a reliable instrument for however long you own it, and it represents an extremely good value that is hard to beat. If you are looking for a full-on professional quality tenor for less than $2500 that is ready to play, you likely know how hard that can be to actually find- but here it is.

This horn rocks. The T991 (or TWO10 as the current version of this horn is now called) is just a fantastic do-it-all saxophone. Top build quality, top ergonomics, excellent intonation, extremely good reliability. Yanagisawa is just hard to beat. And the price! You’d be hard pressed to find a better horn for the money. The pads are in very good condition. There’s no significant past damage. Maybe a tiny bit of evidence of a crease removed from the bell flare (not easy to see), and a little lacquer wear on the neck, are all that needs to be mentioned to show that this one-owner horn was loved and played. You’re saving thousands off the price of a new TWO10, and this plays as well or better. Tone is slightly warmer I think, though they are more similar than different.

This is a nearly-new Yanagisawa WO-10, which is Yanagisawa’s current model that replaces the 991 series, taking the same “elite professional” spot in their lineup (the “basic professional” spot being held by the 901 previously and the W0-1 currently) and other than being priced like a used horn, it is basically new.  It appears to have been played very little and comes with its original case showing it was bought as Kessler Music, where they sell new for $4900.

This one appears to be nearly flawless, with just a couple of light scuff marks here and there if I look closely, and it is missing its original mouthpiece that would have come with it.  It plays very well, feeling to have a slightly bigger tone than the 991, and definitely feels lighter and a little more svelte under the fingers than the 991, although it still seems plenty robust.  I’ve seen a few of these since the WO series came out, and besides the confusing branding of of mixing Os and 0s, I really like these horns. Since they are still fairly new, chances to grab one used are few and far between, so I’d be surprised if this one stuck around for too long.  Grab it while you can and enjoy Yanagisawa’s newest professional tenor saxophone at a discount.

Yanagisawa TWO-37 (!!) Solid Silver Tenor Saxophone New + Setup

Do you want the Lexus of modern tenor saxophones, and you want it fully loaded with all the options? Then the Yanagisawa TWO-37 may be the horn for you. No modern horn is better built or easier to play than the Yanagisawa Elite series, and no other modern horn has this level of finish with solid silver neck, body tube, bow, and bell, as well as extensive engraving throughout. This horn is brand new, and it also comes with an optional full new horn setup done by Matt Stohrer, which is not really necessary, but hey, it’s a special horn, and Matt does the best new horn setup I know of, so if you want the best, you might as well get the best setup too if you want it. I’ll get that done when the horn sells, assuming the buyer wants it done.

It’s pretty hard to beat this horn for beauty, rarity, quality, and playability.  (It takes a year waiting on a special order in order to get one!) These will be instant collectibles, and should hold its value better than about any other modern tenor I can think of. I have this one priced below retail, and it also includes the $400 setup if you want it, also for no extra charge for you. There’s only one available. Like I said, I had to wait a year for this one!

Here’s a little video Tyler did on this horn. We had trouble doing a video of it that didn’t look like a mirror just showing the camera, so we did a black room video with moving spotlights. It looks black in the video for that reason, but it’s this exact horn getting played and filmed.

Yanagisawa TWO1 Professional Tenor Sax New + Setup – Great Price!

                                        $ 3,650

Yanagisawa TWO1 Tenor Saxophone brand new (formerly T901) is a professional saxophone for an absolutely bargain price. It’s also the best built modern saxophone. It just happens to also be affordable. This horn got a new horn checkup after arriving at the GetASax shop. Having a world class repairman take a look at a new saxophone fresh from the factory can often take it from good to great. There are typically 2 or 3 small tweaks that need done, and presto – you get the full experience of what the horn can do. Besides the excellent price, that’s a real selling point, I think. I wish my first new saxophone had been checked out. I suffered with too stiff spring tensions for years in college, without even realizing that I could easily have had that fixed. I know better now!

                                      • Yanagisawa Whitehall Soprano S6 Original Lacquer Nice Shape 772637

These Yanagisawa Whitehall saxophones are basically a Selmer Mark VI soprano, but with a little better intonation, and as good or better build quality. The tone is virtually identical to a Mark VI soprano – so focused, reedy, with an almost oboe-like quality to it. This one is in very good condition with no damage and with a mix of pads. It just got a tune up and a new neck cork, and it’s priced to sell. It’s hard to find a professional soprano in this price range. These are hard to beat. Only one available!
