This is a beautiful original lacquer Buffet Super Dynaction tenor saxophone. The SDA is one of the best vintage tenors made, in my experience, with a big, complex, dark tone with a French core; excellent intonation; and much more modern ergonomics and feel than most other vintage horns (if the latter is important to you). This SDA is original and very clean. This horn currently plays quite well (better than it deserves to) on its mostly original pads, which are still sealing. Compared to a vintage Selmer (everyone always asks this) the tone is fairly similar, but it has a bigger sound, a slightly different but still French core, which is delicate and centered, and similar ergonomics (but the RH is a bit more spread than a VI, for instance). Intonation is very good on these, as a rule. If you like modern ergonomics, you’re interested in a more vintage tone, but you don’t want to have something that’s totally different from modern, then the Buffet SDA is what you want to get!

The only cosmetic issue on this horn is a slightly bent edge of the bell flare on one side. That will go back into its spot just fine, leaving a bit of a cloudy line in the lacquer that will be hard to see. Other than that, this is about as clean as they come – mostly original pads, so not played much at all since new; neck looks great ; body is straight and clean ; not even the usual play wear or chair dents and scratches. It is hard to tell one way or the other, but one leg of the low C key cage may have popped off and been resoldered with no lacquer loss, or it could be factory with just a bit of solder showing at the edge of that foot. This horn has been played so little that there isn’t even lacquer wear on the palm keys. The color is a dark honey and the engraving is very nice as well. This is the best way to buy a vintage tenor, if you can find one – which is why that’s the kind of horn I buy for the site in general – by concentrating the nicest vintage horns in one place, the site becomes the best place to go to get a horn that actually plays like it should.

This horn currently plays quite well (better than it deserves to) on its mostly original pads, which are still sealing. If you like modern ergonomics, you’re interested in a more vintage tone, but you don’t want to have something that’s totally different from modern, then the Buffet SDA is what you want to get! It is also not very expensive compared to what it is. This horn comes with the original red leather Buffet case, which is also in good condition. This price is for the horn with current pads, but contact me about the price to get it with a fresh overhaul, which I will help to subsidize, and will make sure is done to the highest standards.
