This is a 99% perfect original lacquer Buffet SDA tenor SN# 21xxx. This horn is nearly perfect, and would almost pass for a new horn. It has a bit corrosion on the bow/body joint and a few little spots on the Bb keyguard. That’s it. Original pads are intact and sealing WELL. This horn wails. It also has the rare high F# key, which is very unusual on a Buffet.
Compared to a vintage Selmer (everyone always asks this) the tone is fairly similar, but it has a bigger sound, a slightly different but still French core (impossible to describe) and similar ergonomics (but the RH is a bit more spread than a VI, for instance, but only by a hair). It has a medium-dark core, on the tonal spectrum. Intonation is very good. If you like modern ergonomics, you’re interested in a more vintage tone, but you don’t want to have something that’s totally different from modern, (and you don’t want to spend a ton) then the Buffet SDA is what you want to get! I have read online a few times that Buffet tenors supposedly cannot be played at loud volumes, and I honestly have no idea what people are talking about. This horn has a far bigger sound than most Selmers (except maybe the BA) and it won’t back down if you want to play loudly. It comes with the original Lifton case.
