Description

This is a beautiful example of an early Conn 6M alto. This horn was made in the first year of the 6M (Artist) model, 1932. (The very first Conn 6M, which is in my collection, was #250203!) These early 6M’s are some of the best altos ever made in my opinion. I have never played a bad one, and, finding myself unable to resist buying them, I have owned a lot of them at this point. All that is to say, this is, in my opinion, the Conn that you want.

This particular one is in very good condition. It has beautiful original silver plate which will polish up to a gleaming finish. There is only normal wear from use, which, to me, says that this horn plays great. It was obviously very well-cared-for: The gold wash in the bell is still very thick, there are no dents or dings, and amazingly not even a resoldered key cage leg. The pads are pretty old, possibly original, and will need to be replaced. It could also benefit from a fresh set of correct rollers, which you can get here. Believe me, get a good overhaul on this thing, and you will never be tempted to buy another horn. And you can really ruin someone’s day if you let him or her play your horn for a few minutes. No modern horn can come close to the tone, warmth, and what the vintage ads call “carrying power” of a Conn like this. Plus the keywork is really comfortable and fast once it is setup correctly.
