Description
This is one of the most beautiful and perftect Conn altos that I have ever seen. It’s basically a 9/10 with almost 100% of its original, super-thick burnished gold intact. Burnished gold is hand-applied, and it is much thicker and much rarer than regular thin, matte gold plate (because it took 10x the time and labor to apply) The hand-engraved portrait on the bell shows a level of artistry very rarely seen in saxophone engraving. Everything about the portrait is done artistically and with unusual care and precision.
As a player, this horn is a real powerhouse. The New Wonder II altos are some of the best playing altos ever made. They have a huge, warm, powerful voice that is very pleasant to listen to. Nothing brash about them, but they are just vibrating with life to play. Made in the golden age of Conn manufacturing, they are also among the best built saxophones of all time, which makes them dependable and easy to maintain. This horn has a recent repad, and the pads are in good shape. I had it freshly setup and put into very good playing condition pre-sale. It plays very nicely, just how these should play. The only past repair is a resoldered little octave key guide tab that is hard to see. So this horn has made it over 80 years in extremely good condition.
