This is an early Conn New Wonder II baritone in original gold plate. It is very hard to find a gold Conn baritone, and this one has also been recently overhauled! For a 90 year old bari, it’s is in good structural condition, but it has had its fair share of past repairs. The upper bow of this horn has been apart and had dent work done on it and also currently has a dent on the side; and there was also dent work on the back of the bottom bow area. Neck has also been pulled down and corrected before, by the feel of it.

Playing wise, it’s a fun horn to play! It has a relatively new Emilio Lyons overhaul and feels quite good under the fingers. His pad work is great – dry and snappy feelling, not squishy like a lot of Conn overhauls. I’m going to ask my repair guy, Matt, to take a look at it pre-shipping and do a thorough checkup also, but it’s already well above average in overhaul quality. It’s a responsive player and it has a sweet tone. The low register is especially alive to me. This horn likes to play low B and Bb more than most. Tuning wise it tunes pretty well with a large chamber mouthpiece. It is not much different from other Conn baritones to me. Like most Conns, the upper register goes naturally higher pitch wise, so you have to adjust for that in throat / embouchure.

On repairs: The Eb key guard repair isn’t very serious. It has just been resoldered – but solder spreads more on plating than on lacquer, so it’s hard to do cleanly I am told. This could likely be cleaned up and look a lot better if you wanted it to, by removing some of the extra solder and spot plating some more gold there. The strap hook is a replacement of course. The gold plate is wearing thin on the back of the body and the neck especially.

This is a beautiful and sweet playing baritone that should make someone really happy!
