This is one of the nicest King Super 20 Tenors that I have had in for sale. It is in gorgeous original condition, with original pads. Nobody has messed with this horn. The factory gold lacquer is still on the solid silver neck! A really clean King is about 10x harder to find than a clean Mark VI, and this is it. And for around the price of a new pro Yamaha or Yanagisawa!

GetASax is where serious King players seem to come to get horns that are actually right. Probably because that’s the whole focus of the site, and because I really work hard (and pay good money) to find the best Kings. This is actually among the nicest King Super 20 tenors that has made it to the home page without being pre-sold to somebody. Here’s your chance if you want one of these. The ones on eBay are really crappy and/or mis-described.

I see no past repairs on this horn, and only minor signs of light use. That’s amazingly clean for 66 years of existence. The pearls are hardly used, the neck is pristine, the bell flare is great. Almost all of the original lacquer is intact, as are almost all of the original pads! It is great to find a King that has not been messed with, as they can be costly to get right again after serious wear or damage.

Tonally, the Super 20 is the quintessential jazz tenor. Really nothing else sounds like it, with a big, bold voice that has some density and focus from the solid silver neck, but with warmth and wideness from the basic tone of the horn. I collect Super 20’s myself, and I think they are hard to beat for an all-around tenor. I have spoken to other dealers who agree. “Oh, the Super 20? That’s the best tenor ever made.” I’m hesitant to repeat the names of these folks, because vintage sax dealers have to make a living saying nice things about Selmers, not Kings. Haha. But King players know what’s up.

If you want to get this horn overhauled through me, I could give you one of my reserved spots with Matt Stohrer or recommend someone else who will do an excellent job. I have spent years obsessively finding repairmen who are detail-oriented enough to actually do the work correctly, and I don’t mind paying them to do it right.
