The King Zephyr Special is one of the best playing alto saxophones ever produced. It’s wild to me how many repairers who get to work on and play everything – and how many serial saxophone buyers as well – finally get a King Zephyr Special and then the search ends. It’s SUCH a great horn. The early Super 20 series 1 is just a Zephyr Special with different key guards, but my favorite Zephyr Specials (I collect them myself) are the earlier serials like this because they are projecting and also complex and kind of dark in the core tone. I don’t think most people would call it a dark saxophone like a Conn at all though – it’s super big sounding and shakes the walls. It has some zing (‘The King Thing’ as the old timers call it) and a very open and nice upper register that doesn’t thin out. The key action is light and ‘flute like’ which makes it nice and easy to play. I don’t think a more beautiful saxophone has ever been produced. It has the total package of bell engraving, key guards, individually engraved bell keys (my favorite part) and the pearls on the side keys. Add in that this one still has the original pink/gold lacquer over the solid silver double socket neck and it just doesn’t get any better.
