This beautiful Zephyr Special was made in 1937, which is the first year that these horns were made, and it is a beautiful example as well! It’s rare to find any saxophone that looks this good after 75 years, and finding such a rare and desirable one is really special. This horn has no dents or dings, and looks gorgeous with full pearls on palm and side keys and G#. Most people would sell this horn as original lacquer, because it looks really really good, and the engraving could hardly look any better. However, the color of the vintage lacquer is usually a little darker on these horns, and there’s just a hint of fading in some of the fine engraving on the front of the bow that is a telltale sign of the horn having been relacquered very carefully at some point a long time ago. This horn has the solid silver, double-socket neck and the desirable three ring strap hook that would show up on the Super 20 a bit later. Compared to a full pearls Super 20, the Zephyr Special is darker, smokier, and more spread, but it also has tons of power and will shake the walls when pushed. It’s really a great all-around vintage tenor if you’re into Kings and you want something on the darker side of the spectrum. If you’re going to buy a relacquered horn, this is the kind to buy – a super clean relacquer that has very little buffing and that is in superb physical condition. I don’t see any signs of past dent work, and the original neck has not been pulled down. It’s a deal at this price!
