This is a beautiful example of one of the more interesting saxophones made in the 20th century – the Leblanc System saxophones. This horn has SR on the bell, meaning “System Rationale,” or perhaps, “System Revolutionaire” The Rationale/Rationnel (nobody seems to have the definitive spelling!) project was an attempt to build a saxophone according to the Boehm system of fingering, which prioritizes good “venting” above all. The idea is that there should be no closed tone holes below the highest up open tone hole for any note. According to one helpful article, “‘The heart of the Leblanc (Paris) System saxophone is a special coupling mechanism which enables the player to lower the pitch in the left hand key bank one semitone by depressing the first, second or third finger of the right hand.’ In other words, you can lower A (12x|xxx) to Ab by playing, say, 12x|xx3.'”

Besides needing an overhaul, this horn has only minor issues. The neck tenon has been resoldered (though it doesn’t show at all), and there’s a small flat spot in the bottom bow guard. This horn will take a good tech to overhaul it properly, because the fingering system is different from any other sax. When it is done, though, it will play really well with both a good tone and superb evenness across all registers, which is the big payoff of ideal venting. It is sold as-is for now, but hopefully, I can get a really good tech who has experience with these to overhaul it for me and then I’ll post more details. It ships in a modern case in good condition. It’s a gorgeous horn, and with a bit of hand polishing, it will look basically new again!
