The Selmer Balanced Action Tenor is an overall favorite tenor of mine. It’s the first Selmer with modern keywork, and the tone is warm, lyrical, and medium-spread. You know all the greats who played a Balanced so I don’t need to tell you all of that again. It can be hard to find a good deal on a Balanced Action tenor. This is one of those rare opportunities.
I just had some minor tune ups done on this horn, and it now plays surprisingly well, with a beautiful tone, on the old pads. The pads will need to be replaced soon. This looks like original Selmer lacquer to me, but the engraving looks after market. So this was probably originally lacquered, and then engraved for some extra decoration. But I’m pricing this as if it is relacquered, just to be safe, because I cannot say for sure. If you have been waiting for an affordable Balanced Action tenor, I would recommend this one. It needs an overhaul, but the only past damage I see is a minor pull down on the neck that is now fixed, and a line of lacquer missing on the bell flare where it must have bumped a music stand or something long ago. The keywork is not too worn, and I don’t see any signs of buffing on the horn. It should be just a standard overhaul, and then you’ll have a seriously good tenor. It already sounds good – with super old pads.
The price includes the new BAM case in the photos, to keep the horn safe in shipping.
