This is a relacquered Mark VI alto SN114xxx (matching neck) that has just had a fresh overhaul by Steve Collins of Collins Hornworks. Steve’s work is very good, especially on an alto like this, so even a super-picky player will be happy with the way that this horn feels under the fingers. You’re not going to find a better playing VI alto for this kind of money. It has domed metal resonators, and the pads have a nice firm pop to them.
This horn had a little dent taken out of the bell lip, but that’s it for past repairs. It has a very clean history, and the tone holes all look great. There’s no sign of past dentwork, and no sign of other resolders. The neck also looks good and has not had past repairs. I also got the horn re-engraved by the great Sherry Huntley of Artistic Engraving, so that it would look its best for its next owner. The original engraving wasn’t bad, but they just look so much better when Sherry does her magic – it’s kind of a labor of love all-around.
The sound on a 114xxx alto is dark, focused, and powerful. The low teens serials are my favorite VI altos for tone specifically. They have a lot of guts and they work great for a whole range of playing situations. If you want a good VI that can do it all, this would be an easy, turn-key kind of purchase for a great playing alto.
