Here is a beautiful, original lacquer, American-engraved Selmer Mark VI baritone saxophone from 1959, which is just about the most desirable vintage of Mark VI that you could look for. It has good pads and plays beautifully! As far as past repairs, they are at a minimum for a vintage baritone – crease removed from bell flare, some small dents removed from the bell on the brace side around back, a dent removed from the front of the bow by the end of the bow guard, and the very top post on the horn that holds the high E key resoldered. I don’t see any other resolders, and the neck is undamaged and original with matching serial number. Baritones usually have more repairs than this, even after a much shorter interval of time, so this one is very clean. The tone is medium dark, with a beautiful core and a nice, even scale. The intonation is good, and the response is excellent. I don’t like the vintage case this is in, so we will have to figure out a better case for it to come with that it can actually ship to you in. Maybe I can rustle up a newer ProTec or a BAM for it.
If you’re wanting basically the most desirable vintage baritone saxophone, then that’s what this is. It’s in very good condition with good pads, and it’s priced very affordably – basically the same price as a new Yanagisawa BWO20, and only moderately more than a new Yamaha baritone – neither of which sound like this and neither of which are rare or collectible at all, of course. This will also hold its value and go up over time, which is a sweet perk of owning it.
