Selmer Mark VI Tenor 1959 Old Pads Relacquer Best Vintage! 83881

This is a great looking factory relacquered Selmer Mark VI Tenor from what I think is the best overall serial number for a tenor. My own personal VI is right at 82k, and many of the best VI tenors I’ve played have been in the 77k-84k range. These tenors have a dark, rich, powerful, ‘woody’ sort of complexity to the tone that stands out even from the crowd of other great 5-digit Selmer Mark VI tenors. This particular one, at 83881, is right in that best range. If it were original lacquer, it would sell for a 2X+ higher price! And this relacquer is good enough that you can still easily see the lightly-done original engraving (1958-60 VI tenors tend to be engraved originally with the shallowest cuts of any VI’s). The lacquer is even the right color and style for this serial range, but it’s definitely not original. The tenor was well cared-for, and just needs a good overhaul to be a top player. It still plays on the old pads (sound clip below), though it is leaky and needs to be overhauled. If it were not on consignment, I’d get it done pre-sale, but since it’s consignment, I am selling it as-is. It’s a great deal. You could spend this much on a modern Selmer that would both not play as well, and also that would go down in value instead of up. If you buy a horn like this that is the most desirable version, then you will always have the best chance of making some money on it even, if you ever have to sell it.
