Earlier Selmer tenors, like this New Large Bore, are a kind of best of both worlds for many players. The keywork is quite comfortable, and even the left hand pinky keys are light and fast when properly setup. But the tone is much bigger, warmer, and more spread than later Selmers – way bigger sounding than a Mark vi or than any modern Selmer tenor, and approaching the big sound of a Conn (but with Selmer keywork). If you’ve been looking for a deal on an early Selmer tenor, this could be a good option for you. It promises to be a big player with a bit more pad work. I have a used Hiscox Pro II tenor case I can include with the horn as well to keep it safe in a nice case.

This horn is a good example of that. At SN#147xx, it’s a New Large Bore. The neck seems similar to the later Super and Radio Improved horns, which probably accounts for the similarity in tone to the RI and BA. The body tube design is earlier, and it plays very big and alive, as I mentioned already.

Cosmetically, this is basically bare brass, and the engraving is still very sharp and visible. It’s hard to tell if it has ever been relacquered, because the engraving is still nice and clear. I’m selling it as a very well done relacquer that has worn, but it could very well be original and now bare brass. Either way, it’s nice, and there’s not really any metal missing.

In terms of condition, I bought this from a music store that had just overhauled it pre-sale, and while it plays ok, I would say it could use some additional love, or another overhaul. I’m happy to get that done for you through GetASax by one of my favorite techs, or you can have your own tech do it to your specs, of course. The neck has a minor pull down that has been fixed back to the correct angle, and the Eb and F# keycages have been resoldered. That’s about it for past repairs, amazingly.

There’s only one. Get it before it’s gone.
