Of modern Selmer sopranos, the one with the best and most durable build quality is the Series 1. It is all metal and has better construction and key fitting than later Selmers. This means better playability and consistency and less maintenance needed over time. Another reason to buy one of these is that it has the best tone of any Selmer soprano, to my ear, at least. It is a definite departure from the more tinny-tending Mark VI soprano design, and it is darker and fatter sounding than the later Series II or III horns. You get a fairly dark, complex, round tone with some complexity to it, and that is fairly desirable on soprano. This is an easy, turn-key purchase for a beautiful professional Selmer soprano saxophone.

This horn is keyed to high F#, so if you have to have a high G, you will need to get a Series III or a Yanagisawa for that. Otherwise, this is definitely worth your consideration. The intonation is quite good and the ergonomics are modern and comfortable. It works equally well for classical or jazz/commericial depending on mouthpiece and is not mouthpiece-picky.

Cosmetically, this is a nice, clean example of a Series 1 soprano in good physical condition. The original lacquer is almost all present, with just a bit of wear on some touch points (see pictures). It has just had a full repad by Matt Stohrer, so everything is nice and new and ready to go. Modern Selmers usually do need everything replaced, and then they come alive. That is certainly the case with this horn. It is now big and resonant sounding and LOTS of fun to play. Everything is just effortless, and the keywork feels light, even, and snappy under the fingers, like it should. It ships in the original case in good condition.

This is an easy, turn-key purchase for a beautiful professional Selmer soprano saxophone.
