Description

Do you want the coolest vintage Selmer tenor ever? This horn is a serious contender in my book at least. I’m sorely tempted to keep it. But i already have an 18xxx, 19xxx, 20xxx, 29xxx etc. so it gets kind of crazy. But if this listing suddenly disappears… (sigh)

In any case, here’s the deal. Selmer tenors around 17k-29k have a bigger, warmer, more spread tone than any later Selmer (more like a Conn), but they still feel familiar and Selmer-y. The keywork is comfortable, and generally speaking these are very fun horns to play, own, gig on etc. This horn in particular has several special things going for it. First of all, it is original lacquer, which you rarely see on early Selmers like this. I would estimate that there are only a few hundred original lacquer tenors in the world between say, 17k-22k serial. I have only owned four of them, and I especially look for these to buy all the time.

Second, the engraving is amazing. One portrait scene on a Selmer is very rare. But two? It’s just crazy. And all of the engraving is done so beautifully and goes onto the bow. Man, it is just really stunning, and it looks even better in person.

Third, this horn just got a full overhaul by Matt Stohrer, who is known worldwide as one of the best saxophone repairmen available. Matt has an over two year wait for an overhaul, but he just got to this horn, and it is now just fantastically restored. The action feels positive and snappy under the fingers, and the pads seat with “dry” little pops and sing as they close. Low Bb is just another note on one of Matt’s overhauls – you can easily play it in a saturated pianissimo. The horn is setup properly for multiphonics and altissimo. Matt also uses very long-lasting pads, so this horn should need nothing for many years to come. The resonators are a deluxe set hand made by TenorMadness and sold for $120 a set. They are slightly domed brass and reusable, custom sized for the horn.

This horn is currently in its original case. If you want to add a BAM case for gigging, I will give you a great discount on one.
