Selmer Tenor Original Silver Plate New Largebore / Super 1931

This is a beautiful Selmer Super tenor in original silver plate. It is often called a Cigar Cutter also. It plays like a Super, with a big, medium dark, powerful tone has this Conn-like wideness to the sound, and a fuller sounding upper register than you normally find on a Mark VI for example. Keywork is also quite comfortable!

Description

This is a beautiful Selmer Super tenor in original silver plate. It is often called a Cigar Cutter also. This horn did not have an official model name, and is basically about halfway between what we call a New Largebore and a Selmer Super Sax. It plays like a Super, with a big, medium dark, powerful tone that is more like a Conn than Selmers normally are. It is still obviously a Selmer, but it has this wideness to the sound, and a fuller sounding upper register than you normally find on a Mark VI for example. Keywork is also quite comfortable!

Condition-wise: this is original silver plate finish, and it has a fair amount of patina right now. If you polished this up with a high quality silver polish, it would look amazing. But I chose to price it lower and sell it like this rather than putting a lot of money into it and selling it higher, so that someone could get a great deal. Mechanically, there are a couple of cracked pearls on front F and G# (these can be replaced), body side of the bell-body brace has been resoldered (often happens on vintage horns), and the neck has been pulled down, but is now at the proper angle. The little brace on the neck was removed to fix the neck angle and resoldered to the underside of the neck again. The pads are actually in pretty good shape on this horn, so you can easily play it just like this for quite some time, or if you want it all freshly mechanically overhauled and hand polished, it is priced low enough for you to be able to do that and still get a very good deal. This horn has been played a lot, but has been well cared-for over the years – there is no sign of dent work on the bell, bow or body tube, and only the one resolder. Pretty amazing for an 85 year old horn.

Early Selmer tenors like this are hard to find, and they are prized for their phenomenal tone that is bigger than other Selmers. This one is priced well, and should make someone very happy.
