The SML Coleman Hawkins Special model is not often seen, and it seems to be especially rare in alto (this being the only one that I can find any evidence of existing). This horn is in my personal collection, since I’m a big SML fan myself. These horns were made in honor of the “Hawk” himself, who is said to have played one on (at least some of his) European tours.

This alto just got an (expensive) overhaul by Matt Stohrer, and it is playing its best. Matt spent extra time polishing this horn and setting it up carefully with good pad seal even though the rolled tone holes are somewhat unlevel at times. The horn plays like a cross of a Conn New Wonder II and a Selmer BA. The sound is “French” in the core, kind of delicate and complex, but then again it is big and warm and spread like a Conn. It is no wonder that Hawkins (as a BA player) liked what SML was up to in this model. It probably felt familiar and yet opened up some new possibilities. This may be the only Hawkins Special alto, so it’s kind of hard to put a price on it. This is an alto I am very happy to keep myself for my own very small collection.
