The Yamaha YAS-62 Purple Logo is the first version of the Yamaha 62 that was made, and it is still my favorite. I think Yamaha was interested in getting a Selmer Mark VI style tone out of the purple logo, while improving the intonation and ergonomics of the VI just a bit. So that means it’s an excellent value in a professional alto sax. It really does everything pretty well. The tone is warm, somewhat complex, and more pleasant than the later 62’s to my year. The intonation is good, and the keywork is comfortable. It’s the Toyota Camry of alto saxophones. It just works; it’s reliable; and it’s even fun to drive. This particular example just had a full overhaul completed on it. The only past dent work is on the bell flare, where some wavy light reflections are all that remain of a dent in that spot. There’s no other dent work, and there are no other repairs, nor any dents or dings or outstanding repair issues. It’s a clean, nice, freshly overhauled saxophone that plays as well as it did when it was brand new, or better. The pads are my favorite, Italian leather Pisoni, and the keywork feels dry and snappy under the fingers. It has the correct slightly domed plastic resonators, and it plays beautifully on this setup. With a complete overhaul just done, you won’t have to spend any significant money maintaining this horn for a long time. Just the occasional checkup as you break in the pads is all that you should need to do. Low Bb pops out effortlessly and is ‘just another note’, as it should be on a freshly-overhauled saxophone. If you’re looking for something reliable, pleasant-sounding, and easy to play and own, this purple logo 62 will not disappoint. It comes in the original case in good shape. Only one available!
