Simply put, this is a mint condition Yamaha 62R soprano in the mint original case, with the original mouthpiece, polishing cloth, and keys. It has an extremely desirable 3-digit serial# 272, so it is one of the first ones ever made. The original owner who sold it to me, bought it new and hardly ever played it. It would be impossible to find a more perfect 62R because this one is perfect and like new. It has no dents, no dings, no scratches, no wear to the lacquer, and no past repairs. The pads seal well and are in excellent condition. This is as good as it gets on a vintage Yamaha soprano.
Playing wise, this is one of the best soprano saxophones I have ever played. The last one of these that I got sold the same day! I really love the tone of vintage Yamaha purple label horns. It has a ‘vintage’ warmth and complexity to it that goes away on the newer Yamahas. The body of the sax is resonant and vibrates when you play. The tone is medium between bright and dark, with a warmth and richness that makes this a nice soprano saxophone to listen to. It also has very comfortable keywork ergonomically, and the great intonation that makes Yamaha saxophones so good.
So this is a mint, collector-grade example of what is possibly the greatest soprano saxophone model ever made. You can feel confident in buying this horn, not only to play, but also as an investment.
