This fat sounding Selmer Mark VI tenor saxophone from 1974 is on consignment by the widow of a good local player. This was his main horn, and is a very good Mark VI, as well as being an amazing deal for an original lacquer Selmer Mark VI. It has a mix of pads and was just tuned up to play very well on them. As you can hear in the demo video below, the tone is dark and fat and has some nice edge when pushed. That's Tyler playing a GS SLANT 7* with a Rigotti Gold 3 Medium reed. Classic mainstream jazz tenor tone. Of course, you can play this in a concert band with a smaller tip mouthpiece and harder reed, or use it for college saxophone study and it will do anything you want it to. The original lacquer is obviously speckled in places and has some medium areas where it's worn, but that is, of course, because the horn plays well and was played and loved by its previous owner. I sometimes wonder whether horns that were played a lot 'remember' it on some atomic level. They often feel like they want to vibrate under the fingers. It has the standard repairs that one usually sees on a gigging VI tenor that is 52 years old: resoldered keyguard feet on low C, chromatic F#, and Eb and some evidence of small dents having been removed from the back of the bow and body tube. Nothing serious, and as I said, it plays fine as is. If you got this overhauled, it would get disassembled, cleaned, and get all new pads corks and felts, and then it would clean up considerably, and it would probably play about 25% better as well. It comes in a modern contoured case that will protect it in shipping. If you're looking for a lot of saxophone for the money in an original VI, this would be pretty hard to beat.
