  BAM Cabine Alto Saxophone Case

  Available in BLACK, RED, and Silver! This is one of the best alto cases made today. It’s a 10/10 in terms of padding, and weight. The new plastic latches don’t seem like they will last forever, and the shell could be harder, but it’s pretty good. It’s built to minimize size, so you don’t have extra storage in this case. It fits the horn, neck (includes neck bag for in the bell) and mouthpiece. It also includes nice backpack straps and also works over one shoulder. It is called “Cabine” because you can carry it into an airplane cabin without being stopped. It is also a flexible case and fits most major modern saxophones that I have tried (except Keilwerth, Eastman, and Cannonball big bell). It also fits a range of vintage horns including vintage Selmer, King, some Buescher saxophones. It does not fit any Conn alto saxophones very well, nor does it fit split bell keys Kings or Bueschers that well, nor does it fit the Top Hat and Cane Buescher’s bell dimensions.  If you have questions about whether a specific horn will fit in a BAM case, contact me and I’ll let you know.

  BAM Cabine Tenor Sax Case

  Available in BLACK, RED, and Silver! This is one of the better cases made today. It’s a 10/10 in terms of padding (particularly for Selmer, Yamaha, and Yanagisawa saxophones), and weight. The new plastic latches don’t seem like they will last forever, and the shell could be harder, but it’s pretty good. Maybe an 8/10 in protection and a 7/10 in durability. It’s built to minimize size, so you don’t have extra storage in this case. It fits the horn, neck (includes neck bag for in the bell) and mouthpiece. It also includes nice backpack straps and also works over one shoulder. It is called “Cabine” because you can carry it into an airplane cabin without being stopped. It is also a flexible case and fits most major modern saxophones that I have tried (except Keilwerth, Eastman, and Cannonball big bell). It also fits a range of vintage horns including vintage Selmer, King, some Buescher saxophones.   BAM Classic Alto Sax Case

  Hard shell, adequate storage, and soft padding inside make The BAM Classic Tenor Case one that I keep coming back to for shipping vintage saxophones around in. The BAM Classic Tenor  fits Selmer shaped saxophones only – nothing with left hand bell keys fits in here. But Selmer, Yamaha, Yanagisawa, and copies of those three brands will fit. It’s quite affordable for a good case, though I don’t know whether the zipper will last forever based on used ones of these that have come through the shop. Still, for the price, the BAM Classic Tenor case hard to beat. The soft foam interior is great.

  BAM France Panther Cabine Alto Saxophone Case

  BAM France did a nice job on this BAM Cabine Panther Alto saxophone case. It’s like the delightfully slim regular Cabine cases (I like the Red cabine best of those by the way!), but it has new, redesigned latches, and a great-looking anti-slip exterior material. It comes with a mouthpiece pouch, a neck bag that goes in the bell, and backpack straps. This case weighs half what a wood Selmer Series III, or Yamaha Custom case weighs, and it is super easy to carry around. It’s called “Cabine” because you can easily bring it as a piece of carry on luggage in the airplane ‘cabin.’ You won’t believe how light and protective this case is. It keeps your horn in better adjustment than any of the factory cases that come with new horns today. The internal foam is soft and form-fitting. You save in repair more than you spend on the case. The cover just looks super great, and the rubberized feel keeps the case firmly where you put it.

  The only downsides on this case are:

  1. The new latches are plastic and don’t seem like they will last that long. And they kind of spring open if you bump the button on the bottom edge.
  2. The shell is not all that hard. It flexes if you push on it, and you would definitely not want to step on this case or gate check it. Works great as a carry on.

  BAM New Trekking Alto has a big, open interior, and fits a wide range of horns. It is a bulky case, designed for maximum storage, not for portability. The built-in backpack straps are usable though, as is the stowable rain cover. So you can put your laptop safely in the huge external pocket and cover it with the rain cover and still get around with your sax in good shape. This case’s fragile zipper and rather flimsy hinge won’t please everyone, but it does have a hard shell and the soft interior foam that are the essential ingredients in making a protective case.

  BAM Softpack Alto Saxophone (Hard) Case

  The BAM Softpack Alto saxophone case is a very good case – one of my favorites on the market today. It does a lot of things right. First of all, it’s a reasonably hard case. “Softpack” is something of a bad name. The case is hard enough to protect your horn in most situations. Don’t step on it or pack luggage on top, or gate check it,  but for everyday use, it’s fine.

  A few great features: comes with high-quality neoprene grippy backpack and one shoulder straps, and the case works either way. I like it over one shoulder because it works when you’re carrying a backpack and hangs comfortably.

  The inside dimensions are quite flexible. There’s a removable semi-hard plastic cover over a hollow space in the bottom left of the case. When you take this piece of plastic out, then saxophones with left hand bell keys fit in the BAM Softpack alto saxophone case. That means that a Conn 6M (naked lady, lady face etc) AND a Conn New Wonder II (Chu Berry etc) both fit. A Selmer Radio Improved alto saxophone fits in the BAM Softpack alto sax case. And almost all modern horns fit. All Yamaha, Selmer, and Yanagisawa saxophones fit in the Softpack alto sax case. Only the really big bell eastmans and the wide bow modern Keilwerths don’t fit. But almost every vintage saxophone fits. It is of course, molded on the shape of a Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone, so any Balanced Action, Super Balanced action or VI, Reference 54 etc. fits great in a BAM Softpack Alto saxophone case.

  Finally, it has a sturdy zipper, so that the case shuts securely and will not fall open. The bottom material is grippy also, so it stays well on a table or whatever. There is a separate place for the neck and for one mouthpiece, even if you remove the plastic inner storage compartment, and you can put more gear in one of the Pro-tec bell storage bags that are sold on Amazon for $10.

  If you own a Conn New Wonder II tenor, a Radio Improved or New Large Bore tenor, a King Zephyr or Super 20, this is among the best cases for it. Of course, it also fits almost all modern saxophones as well. It’s a reasonably hard case. “Softpack” is something of a bad name. The case is hard enough to protect your horn in most situations. Don’t step on it or pack luggage on top, or gate check it,  but for everyday use, it’s fine.

I’ve seen the zippers fail frequently on older cases, but it should last several years without problems. These are nice because they have enough room to fit a range of saxophone shapes. The interior foam is soft and protective. The exterior shell is reasonably hard. I wouldn’t stand on it or gate check it, but it’s good enough for daily use. I’ve seen the zippers fail frequently on older cases, but it should last several years without problems. These are nice because they have enough room to fit a range of saxophone shapes.   Hiscox Pro II Alto Saxophone Case PRO-II-WAS-B

  Hiscox makes the best overall saxophone case on the market today for most horns. This is especially true for vintage saxophones, because a Hiscox case will fit harder-to-fit horns like a transitional Conn with split bell keys and a larger than normal bell. It will also fit a 10M or similar horn with opposite side bell keys. These are the strongest case on the market, as well as the best insulated against temperature changes, and also the lightest for travel or shipping.
