This is a excellent condition Conn transitional Alto with split bell keys and the rare, art-deco engraving. The deco engraving like this is found only in a narrow range and is highly desirable among players and collectors alike for the beauty it has, and for the unique combination of tonal characteristics these horns have. These transitional Conns are the best of the vintage Conns in my experience. They have a big, warm tone that is perfect for a wide range of playing. You really can’t get a tone even close to this from any modern horn. When you play this sax, the whole body tube shakes in your hands – you can feel the horn resonating with you! It’s an addictive experience, and it shows how special these horns are. You won’t want to play anything else once you get used to this feeling.

This horn has and only a couple of tiny dings that will also be removed pre-sale. The F# key cup (not tone hole) has also had a little bit of work done to smooth out the edge of it. This is very minor. The silver plate is almost all present with just the smallest amount of wear on a few touch points. The neck is also original and undamaged. It is just a gorgeous and clean example of a transitional Conn.
This horn has just received a full overhaul done by Bill Cole of Cole’s Woodwind Shop in Saratoga Springs NY. I found Bill by asking around for who was the best repair guy in the Northeastern US, and several people named Bill, so I had to try him out. Sure enough, I am quite impressed by the quality of the overhaul on this horn. The pads have a nice, firm, snappy feel and everything is setup great with an eye towards the details that take an overhaul from ok to great. If you’re in his part of NY state, you should definitely check out Bill Cole! (And I am very picky about these things, to the point that I have spent several thousand dollars already this year having overhauls done by inferior techs re-done by really good ones, all so that you can get a sax from me that plays better than one from any other source:-)

The intonation is good, especially with a medium or large chamber mouthpiece. The Conn tone is beloved for its dark, rich core and velvety smoothness, together with 30’s jazz power in abundant supply when pushed.
This is an easy, turn-key purchase for a superb alto saxophone.
