Conn 10M Tenor Original Lacquer Pre-War 274xxx
This beautiful original lacquer Conn 10M tenor is in good condition and ready to play right out of the case. It just had a tune up, and it has a mix of older and newer pads. It plays just how you would expect, with that big, medium dark, room-filling Conn tone that everyone loves! This horn is not pristine, but has been played some, and has a few past repairs: there have been a few small dents removed on the back of the bow and bell, one by the lyre holder, and one from the side of the neck, all clearly pictured below. One post by the G# has been resoldered where it popped off. These are just run-of-the-mill vintage saxophone repairs and not serious, but I mention them so you know just what you are getting. The horn is beautiful, and you don’t notice this stuff unless you look quite closely.
Pre-war 10M’s in good physical and cosmetic condition are getting harder to find, and this one is priced on the lower side for a quicker sale. It includes the pictured Pro-Tec case as well. The Conn 10M is one of the best tenor saxophones ever made, and this is a nice example from the prime serial range. If you have been looking for a good Conn to play, this would be an excellent choice. Only one available!

Conn 10M Tenor Original Silver Plate Carlo Cennamo Overhaul Exceptional 311896
Just back from a full mechanical overhaul by Carlo Cennamo, this gorgeous original silver plated Conn 10M tenor is playing as well as it possibly can, and will continue to do so with minimal maintenance for the foreseeable future. It feels like a brand new saxophone under the fingers. The tone is huge, medium spread, warm, and chocolatey. With a vintage Dukoff Hollywood or Link STM Double Ring (or modern piece with similar baffle and chamber) you can get a tone that will make every other player green with jealousy. Even random bystanders will look up and think ‘man, I love the saxophone!’
It’s an understatement, but I think you’ll be pleased! It’s hard to communicate how satisfying it is to buy a horn that is truly playing at its full potential. Here’s something I often think about as it relates to buying a musical instrument like this, and it’s a philosophy that I live by. Attributed to Benjamin Franklin, by the way, but as with everything on the internet, who knows if that’s true? I’m putting this horn in a nice BAM Softpack tenor case, which is the same case I use for my personal horns that have left hand bell keys. It protects the tenor perfectly, and will be satisfying to own and use.

Conn 10M Tenor Pre-War 300326 1941 Original Lacquer Matt Stohrer Overhauled!
This beautiful Conn 10M tenor is one of the nicer original lacquer pre-war examples that you will see! And it just got Matt Stohrer’s excellent overhual done on it. Add that to the fact that Conns like this are among the best playing tenors ever made, and you’ve got a horn that really checks all the boxes. Beautiful condition, original lacquer, best vintage, best overhaul, best model and brand of horn. These Conns are just so fun to play. The tone is so hard to beat (Go listen to Dexter in his Conn period and see what I mean.) The keywork is also quite comfortable (though not modern). Once you get used to it, you can play as fast on a Conn as on anything. The intonation is frankly great! Better than a lot of modern horns.
But the tone is the reason to play a Conn like this. This one is just effortless to play. It has a beautifully saturated low Bb even at ppp volume. It just whispers and fills the room at the same time! And if you push it, it really goes noticeably louder than other tenors without backing down. The overhaul is part of the cost of this horn. For what you get, it’s a great deal. Matt is about two years backed up with pros wanting their horns overhauled, so his overhauls can be hard to come by, and his work is worth paying for I think! You also get the BAM Softpack which fits this horn well. The newer Softpacks don’t fit a 10M as well, but this one does.

Conn 10M Tenor Pre-War Fresh Overhaul Great Deal Relacquer 284175
This pre-war rolled tone holes Conn 10M has a huge tone and plays beautifully. It just got a full overhaul and plays really well. This horn is refinished, as you can see, but besides that, it it a very good tenor. The great thing about 10M’s is that they both play completely differently from any modern horn, AND they have fast, comfortable keywork once you get used to it. The intonation is good, and the ergonomics are good. If you’ve been looking for a powerful, dark, fat sounding tenor that just gets the job done, that’s what this is. It’s hard to beat for the money.

This is a beautiful condition pre-war Conn 10M tenor saxophone that is currently getting overhauled. It’s original lacquer, and there’s only some minor play wear here and there, and a bit of oxidation in the bell engraving.
The nice thing about a Conn when setup well is that it comes to feel remarkably modern under the fingers. There’s a couple of weeks’ adjustment period where your muscle memory has to learn some new tricks. After that, this keywork layout is just as fast as a Selmer style one – really! If you don’t believe me, check out Sal Nistico on his 10M, or go watch some Dexter Gordon videos.
In any case, that’s what you’re getting here – and what you’re paying for. A hand selected, beautiful example of one of the best 10M’s ever (= one of the best tenor saxophones ever) and also overhauled by one of the best repairmen around, so that it plays its best, and will do so for the long haul.
For the moment, I’m posting some photos of the horn in progress. It’ll get done pretty soon, but go ahead and grab it to reserve it for you. It will be ready within a month of purchase, and maybe much sooner. it’s Christmas/New Years, so I can’t promise you get it right away, but you will get it!

Conn 10M Tenor Pre-War Original Lacquer Cleaned and Ready for Pads Very Good Condition Great Deal – just add an overhaul
This is a BEAUTIFUL original lacquer Conn 10M that is totally ready to be overhauled by your favorite saxophone repair shop. Or get it overhauled through GetASax if you prefer. Way back in 2009 I was selling 10M’s this nice for more than this price, also with original pads, and they have gone up a LOT over the past 10 years. I am pricing this one low so that it sells quickly. Check out those photos. Go ahead – zoom in, make them full screen. The larger the image, the better this horn looks. It has had a few small dings removed, and the body side of the brace was carefully resoldered where it had popped off. (This happens sometimes on Conns.) You can hardly tell at all. That’s really about it! This is as clean as a 10M gets, even if you wait around for a year for the best one you can find.
If you have been looking for a definitely great 10M, look no further. If you want to get this AND get it in with a Conn specialist like Matt Stohrer for overhaul, I am open to giving you one of my precious reserved overhaul spots with Matt. His work on Conns is really outstanding. I don’t make any money on that. You just work out your overhaul options with Matt.
To give you a taste of what this horn can sound like, here’s a classic recording of Dexter Gordon putting his 10M through its paces. That’s a Hollywood Dukoff from the 40’s if you’re curious. The horn can take a ton of air, and just keep giving you more tone. Dex never sounded better than at this period on the 10M. It’s a natural fit.

This is a beautiful original lacquer Conn 10M Tenor from the earliest period of the 10M (10M starts at 263k or so). My personal favorite 10M (best ever) is actually only 2 serial numbers later than this one! 269169, and this is 269167. It just got a complete overhaul by Matt Stohrer, and it’s the best playing 10M I’ve sold in years. The only reaons I’m not keeping it is because I already have 269169, also overhauled by Matt, and it’s just the same (and ridiculously great).
You won’t go wrong with this one. It had a couple of dings removed, and it cleaned up great. Original pads came out. Pisoni italian leather pads went in, along with reusable flat brass resonators that really make a 10M sing.

There’s nothing quite like a good Pre-war Conn 10M tenor in full song! I play one as my main tenor most of the time, and I just don’t think there’s a better overall combination of tone, intonation, comfortable keywork (yes, I said comfortable!), and fun playing experience. Plus it sounds completely different from any modern horn on the market, in a way taht makes people’s ears perk up and want to hear more. This is a golden age Dexter Gordon type 1941 Conn 10M that was (probably factory) relacquered and overhauled with Conn Reso Pads at some point long ago. The lacquer is nitrocellulose like you see from the 50’s and 60’s, so it’s probably an old relacquer that has been sitting for a long time on these pads. It’s priced quite low for a pre-war 10M, just because it got a new coat of lacquer and because it needs a repad. I don’t see evidence of heavy buffing, or of any serious past damage that would be masked by the relacquer. It looks like it was always well cared-for and was relacquered for aesthetic reasons, which was standard practice right up through the 70’s at least. If you want to get the best Conn tone and you’re on a budget, or if you’re a repairman looking for a fun horn to repad that will sound GREAT when done, this is for you! It does play reasonably well on the old Reso Pads, so you can certainly get an idea of how it will play overhauled, but it will be easily twice as good with new pads.

Conn 10M Tenor Rolled Tone Holes Original Silver Plate Very Good Condition Fresh Overhaul! 310735
This is a fantastic, freshly overhauled Conn 10M Tenor in original silver plate finish. It has a beautiful gold was bell as well. It has a little bit of ID engraving on it, which accounts for about a $1000 discount in the price that you get it for. The overhaul was done through GetASax with Pisoni italian leather pads and reusable slightly domed brass TenorMadness resonators, which are the best resonators around IMO for a Conn like this. It’s an effortless player and just feels wonderful to play. It’s a steal at this price, and outplays anything else you can buy in this price range, vintage or modern. Whoever gets it is one lucky player. Here’s Tyler playing a few notes on it just for fun.

Conn 10M Tenor Saxophone 1935 Fresh Overhaul Original Lacquer Great Deal!
This is this kind of Conn 10M tenor saxophone that makes people ditch their Selmers and Yamahas. It’s also a great deal at this price! It is original lacquer, AND it has been recently overhauled before I got it, and is playing very nicely. The keywork is comfortable, intonation is excellent, and the tone is to die for. Wide, dark, but still punchy and with a good amount of focus. Palm key tone is gorgeous and full, not a bit thin. This tenor has been well cared-for over the years, and the only past repairs I see are some small dents removed from the back of the body tube and bow, and evidence of a slight pull down having been ‘pulled back up’ from the neck, which is a very common thing to see on vintage saxophones. This pull down (now fully corrected) was about a 2 on a scale of 1-10 in severity, so not a big deal.
I have a lot of Conns, but not many of them that are both pre-war and that have a recent overhaul. That makes this one an excellent deal. Only one available. By the way, this is what original lacquer looks like on the early 10M’s from ’34-35. The engraving style is a little different from later 10M’s, on the early ones in the 260-270k range. This is what it looks like (and should look like).
Just for fun, here’s Dexter Gordon putting a 10M from the same era through its paces. (The mouthpiece is a Hollywood Dukoff, which I also have for sale, if you are looking.) The sound mixing guy who recorded Dex always had to dial him back a lot. There really is no limit to the volume on a Conn 30M tenor.

Conn 10M Tenor Saxophone 1940 Pre War Excellent Condition Orig Overhauled!
Fresh overhaul just finished on this beautiful original lacquer Conn 10M tenor saxophone from 1940. This horn is in excellent condition and just got a high end overhaul to put it into absolutely effortless shape. Nothing sounds like a 10M! This is one of the best sounding horns on the site right now! Get this 10M before they go up in price anymore. This is guaranteed to be excellent, and it’s already got a top shelf overhaul, so you don’t have to spend any money or time worrying whether it’s ‘right’ or not. It is! Lacquer’s a bit speckly in places, which is normal for an 81 year old saxophone. If that bugs you, then you could wait around, but this is a great one, and they don’t often last long once they get a good overhaul. They’re arguably the most fun tenors to play period. When I want to play tenor, it’s 10M or King Super 20, depending if I’m feeling like a darker or brighter, super-powerful tenor.

This Conn 10M tenor saxophone from 1948 comes to you in very good original condition. There are no resolders. The bell flare is undamaged. Neck is not pulled down. Body tube looks clean as well. There were some small dents removed from the back of the bow, but that was done well, so that it is hard to tell at all. Everything is in good shape and keys move freely. Rolled tone holes are also undamaged and in great shape. This saxophone is sold! But click here to see our current selection of tenor saxophones.This is a super clean silver plated Conn Transitional tenor saxophone SN# 256xxx with split bell keys and naked lady engraving. This particular iteration of the transitional Conn is very rare and highly desirable. The naked lady engraving is almost always on the 10M-style horns, but there was just a short period in which they still made split bell key versions but put the new engraving on them. As I already mentioned, the sound is really big on this horn. As soon as you start playing, it comes alive, and the body tube resonates in your hands. The intonation is pretty good, and the not-so-comfortable keywork will fade into insignificance because you will love the sound so much. There is not too much more to be said about this horn, except that whoever gets it is going to be one happy person.

It will be a really good deal for the money for somebody, I think, because it has been relacquered very gently without causing much in the way of mechanical problems on the horn. It is a good-looking relacquer job without much buffing. The reddish color is from the high copper content of the brass in these early 10M’s, and is part of what contributes to the great tone they have. If you have been wanting a 10M for a while, but you are on a budget, this horn should play just as well as an original lacquer 10M with a good mechanical overhaul. There’s nothing like an early 10M with rolled tone holes and that big, warm, Jazz era tone. The keywork is fast and comfortable, and the intonation is typically very good. This is one of my favorite models of saxophone bar none. Get it now for a bargain price and start enjoying it!

Conn 10M Tenor Saxophone 306843 Original Lacquer Pre-War
Nice original lacquer freshly-overhauled pre-WWII Conn 10M Tenor Saxophone. These are the best of the vintage Conn tenors! The price includes the full, high-end OVERHAUL, which was just completed. An overhaul (people always ask) means that everything that can be changed gets done, and done correctly: all new pads, corks, and felts, professional setup, key fit checked and improved, neck fit checked and improved, full disassembly, cleaning, all new oil, lots of play testing. This horn turned out exceptionally well, and plays really easily and beautifully throughout the range. The tone is medium dark, wide, but with more focus than earlier Conns, and a bigger, wider sonic pallette than any modern saxophone. The palm keys stay full and consistent with the rest of the horn. The low register whispers out at a saturated pianissimo whether subtoning or not. Intonation is excellent, keywork is comfortable. If you’re coming from a modern horn, there’s a couple of weeks’ adjustment period, but then you are back up to full speed playing wise, in most people’s experience. A nice, orignial, overhauled 10M is pretty hard to find, and this one is one of the really good ones. It has only minor past repairs, like a resoldered octave key. Great condition, and plays like a new horn.

Conn made AMAZING saxophones during its prime years of 1925-1945, during which time the Conn factory was the largest (and arguably best) musical instrument factory in the world. The professional models of these “prewar” Conns are extremely well-made, and they are simply a joy to play. This horn is a pro Conn “Artist” 10M tenor saxophone that is in just about as pristine condition as a person is likely to find. It has nearly all of its original silver plate finish, and it has beautiful hand engraving on the bell, featuring the famous “naked-lady” portrait. This horn still has its original factory pads and factory setup, even the warranty card, and the original case is still very nice, though you might want to add a protective, modern case for safe shipping.

Great deal on an original lacquer, rolled tone holes Conn 10M tenor. This horn came from a big collection of great American saxophones that I recently bought. I am planning to get this overhauled soon if it doesn’t sell at the lower price with current pads. It was overhauled before I got it, but I don’t like the way the pads feel, and it would be better to just redo it for long term enjoyment. It has a huge, warm, medium dark, powerful tone that fills a room instantly. And the intonation is also great. The keywork is quite fast and comfortable once you get used to it, which only takes a couple of weeks if you are coming from a Selmer.
The only past repairs are some small dents removed from the back of the body tube. Probably from a mouthpiece rattling around in the case with the horn long ago. One in the upper body tube, one near the strap hook, and one near the thumb hook. Also a small one removed from the top of the neck. It’s in very good shape now. It’s uncommon to see a 10M like this with so few repairs and nothing resoldered or seriously damaged and repaired. This is one of the good ones for sure! Engraving is beautiful and crisp also.

I bought it from a player who was using it, so it’s not bad if you want to just play it as is. But I always tell people that it is best to repad horns that have older pads because then you get the horn’s full potential. So although it does play, plan on getting this horn repadded soon. The tone is classic 10M – big, rich, full, powerful if you push it, sweet if you hold back. It is also hard to beat 10M keywork for speed, and you Selmer guys out there will get used to the ergonomic differences if you give it a few weeks.

There are no dents or dings or resolders on the horn, and the bell, body tube, and bottom bow are all clean. This sax has a mix of older and newer pads and they are sealing very well, so it does not need an overhaul at present. The tone is classic 10M – big, warm, somewhat spread, but with a controllable core to it as well. The keywork is not modern, but it was designed well, and it is very fast, and it doesn’t take long to get used to it. People are still playing these horns from the 30’s and 40’s because they are works of art, and monuments to American craftsmanship, but most of all because of the tone.

This is a fully restored Conn Pre-war 10M Tenor saxophone that looks like a new horn. If aesthetics are important to you, and you also want a saxophone that is already restored, this would be a great purchase! And you save money since it has a new coat of lacquer, compared to if the original lacquer were still there. This beautiful 10M is from the second year that the 10M was made, and it is in very good condition. It was refinished and completely overhauled by Wichita Band, who sold it only a few months ago on eBay for $3850. I’m pricing it lower, because I think $3850 is a bit high for it. So you can get a great deal, on a horn that has an expensive restoration already completed. The pads are reso-pads like Conns originally came with, so it has a vintage soft feel under the fingers. The horn plays really easily, with a big, warm tone like you would expect with a 10M.

Conn 10M Tenor Saxophone Pre-war Excellent Condition 266792 Clean Refinish Old Pads
This cool early 10M is pretty unique. It has a special-ordered body tube omitting the forked Eb vent key (normally by the thumb hook). The serial is engraved rather than stamped as a result. A helpful member of the Conn Sax FB group had a metal Conn clarinet with serial engraved in the same font and style. No sign of buffing, no sign of tone hole removal. This was a one-owner horn that I bought from the owner’s daughter. He played it in some bands on the NC coast in the 40’s and then put it away. It looks like a clean factory relacquer to me, with Conn pads, but lacquer over the engraving. Please note that 10M engraving at 266k serial was always done with a lighter hand than you think of on later Conn 10M’s like in the 290k range. The pads, being super old, are going to need to be replaced. But there are no past repairs or problems that I see on the horn. It’s a beautiful, clean 10M that got a new coat of paint probably in the 40’s by the look of it. With an overhaul, it will be one of the best tenors ever. Pre-war 10M’s are just about my favorite tenors of all time, and this one will be no exception, as they are very consistent from horn to horn. Get it for a great price, and you will be in business!

Conn 10M Tenor Saxophone Pre-War Original Lacquer Exceptional Player Matt Stohrer Overhaul
One of the best playing tenors on the entire site right now. This has a huge, effortless, resonant voice. Vibrates in your hands and comes to life easily even at low volumes. It’s a joy to play. You can’t beat Matt Stohrer’s work on one of these. He did a full overhaul a few years ago, and it hasn’t been played much since. He just did a full-day full disassembly, cleaning, and re-setup, and it’s as good as new.
What superlatives should I choose to get across what a great tenor this is? In my opinion, the Conn 10M is a serious contender for the best tenor saxophone ever made. It has a full, medium dark tone that is wider and richer than vintage Selmers. I’m not just saying the Conn is the best of the less expensive tenors, and leaving SBA’s and Mark VI’s to the side. I actually think the Conn is the superior player – more fun, better in tune, more even scale, sounds better on recordings and in person. That’s me. I love vintage Selmers also, but there’s a reason why Conns are what you more and more see when you go to live shows – the keywork is quite comfortable once you get used to it, and they do everything really well.
And this is one of the best of the best, so to speak. It got the sort of individual attention that takes these (very consistently manufactured) instruments from good to exceptional. Get this one and get playing. Or if you want one that looks nearly perfect and is also overhauled, check the 271k. It’s also fantastic, and looks nearly new. But this one is my personal favorite.

Conn 10M Tenor Saxophone Prewar Overhauled Outstanding Condition 271884
Outrageously nice ORIGINAL lacquer Conn 10M tenor pre-war from 1936. This tenor is looking incredible at 83 years young. This is one of the cleanest, most perfect vintage Conn tenors that I have seen, AND it just had a complete overhaul with all new pads etc so that it’s playing its best. This beast has a huge, wide tone and tons of projection. The sound is wide – room-filling, and gorgeous. I hate to use so many superlatives in one description. It feels like I’m spending them profligately after being habitually sparse with them on most of the site, but come on – do you really see many 10M’s in this kind of shape anymore? It’s just effortless to play, with low Bb popping out like any other note, regardless of low volume. It has a nice, snappy pad feel, and has really been babied. It was original pads until it got overhauled earlier this year. The only past repairs in the overhaul were a couple of small dents removed from the bell, which are really quite minor. That’s pretty much it. It has the original case in nice shape as well.
It’s basically everything you could possibly want in a vintage Conn. Super clean, great player, Pre-War, overhauled, beautiful. The works. It will most definitely go up in value in coming years, as Conns are being snapped up left and right by pro players who understand that the tone is unbeatable, and the keywork is quite fast and comfortable once you get used to it. One of my favorite horns on the site for sure! I would consider pairing this with a modern case for safe shipping and gigging. I can recommend some BAM cases that will fit and give you a good price on one.

Conn made AMAZING saxophones during its prime years of 1925-1945, during which time the Conn factory was the largest (and arguably best) musical instrument factory in the world. The professional models of these “prewar” Conns are extremely well-made, and they are simply a joy to play. It’s a gorgeous horn in the prime serial range for a Conn transitional. There is no past damage, and there are no past repairs of any kind. It is near mint condition, even though it is 75 years old! When they are this clean, you know that you are getting the experience of what one of these really should be like.

Conn 10M Transitional Tenor 268908 Ugly Needs Restoration Aubra Graves
From the estate of Aubra Graves, whose lovely playing, into his 90’s inspired thousands of players around the world, this is a quite worn 10M tenor that needs an extensive overhaul but that promises to be worth the effort. Aubra bought this horn freshly overhauled from Wichita Band, and played it on that fresh overhaul for many years. Now it’s dirty and it has some poorly done homemade mods that will need to be fixed. Any decent saxophone repairman who has made or repaired a key will be able to handle this. I got Aubra’s other 10M overhauled, and it was a big job – cost me around $2350 – though that one was rougher than this.
This is basically just an early 10M, rather than a transitional, but people still tend to label them transitional at this serial. If you do your own repairs, this would be a good way to find a fixer upper that will very likely be an excellent player when it is all cleaned up and playing its best.

Conn 10M Transitional Tenor Saxophone 1933 Fresh Overhaul Excellent Player
This is a hard to find example of a very late ‘transitional’ Conn New Wonder II / 10M tenor saxophone. It has features of each model – mostly 10M keywork at this point, except for the bell keys still being split between left and right. Original lacquer!
Just back from a near-overhaul extremely comprehensive setup. It had new pads when I got it in, but a bad overhaul, so we re-overhauled it but reused the pads, which were fine. We disassembled, cleaned throughout, oiled, took out all the pads, and reseated them with extra adhesive, and replaced many of the tiny adjustment screws that Conns come with. This tenor also got the neck ‘fit’ to the tenon, which makes a big difference, and it got new rollers too, to match the originals. Now, it plays effortlessly, and feels and looks great. The pads are all sealing super well and should be setup for the long haul – unlikely to need more than minor adjustments for a long time! That’s great, because most people have never, I think, actually experienced a vintage saxophone like this when it was totally ‘right’. When it is, you see why these horns have such lasting value and popularity. They’re really just about the best sounding tenors ever. And it’s LOUD too, but without breaking up. The loudest Selmer is only about half as loud as a good Conn like this. And the body tube vibrates in your hands when you push it. It’s just the best.
You get it for less than these often go for, simply because it has been played a lot and has some keyguard resolders and general lacquer wear. It’s all fixed up though, and should play great for a long time with just minor regular maintenance.
Those Connoisseurs and Conngnoscenti (sorry, couldn’t resist) out there who know how great the late transitional tenors are can advise you on this one. It has the wideness and ‘wildness’ of a New Wonder II, but a little more focus, a little more slotted intonation, and the faster keywork of a 10M. If you want more focus, and even more slotted in intonation, then get a later 10M. If you want something a bit darker, and more spread, get an earlier NWII. If you want a little of both, get this! These tenors are only going up in value, so it’s also a solid buy as an instrument that will hold its value well when you go to sell it later.

Conn 10M Transitional Tenor Saxophone 250009 Art Deco Silver Plate Recent Overhaul Outstanding!
This is a very nice condition Conn New Wonder II tenor, built in 1932, among the earliest of the “transitional” series with art deco engraving and raised side E key. It is in its original silver plate, and has a recent mechanical overhaul on it that was very well done. This tenor is tight and slick and snappy and not mushy under the fingers (as can sometimes happen to Conns with less-than-stellar overhauls) and has the simply unbelievable enormity of tone that even now, after having owned and played about as many saxophones as anyone else, still surprises and delights me when I pick up a Conn. As a repairman friend of mine is fond of saying “I am not prone to hyperbole, but I could go to court and win the case that Conn has the biggest tone.” If you haven’t had a chance to play a 1920s-1930s Conn, you simply haven’t seen all that the saxophone can do. A good Conn is a truly astonishing instrument, and it is easy to see why so many of the professionals of the era favored Conns. If you need to project to the back of a dance hall in the age before amplification, a Conn is the way to go.
And because so many professionals of the golden age of big band and jazz played Conns, it is not common to find one in clean shape- and although almost anything can be fixed in the right hands, I find it better to start with a clean example when possible, even (perhaps especially) when being fixed in the right hands. And this horn fits the bill- straight, not abused, not refinished, not overly worn, and well overhauled. 85 years old and ready to play out of the case, putting other horns to shame with its undeniably massive tone. This is a great horn, and whoever buys this one, your neighbors 3 houses down are going to know when you make the switch.

It is a 12M baritone with rolled tone holes, which is rare enough. But this one is in original nickel plate. I have never heard of another nickel plated baritone in this serial range. On top of that, almost every nickel plated Conn has no engraving, and this one has the full regular 12M engraving on it. It may be one-of-a-kind. On top of that, people who have played a lot of Conn saxophones know that the nickel plated ones are special. They have more power and ‘bark’ to the tone than any other Conn. It is pro-quality in every way and should satisfy any bari enthusiast looking for the best possible vintage tone. The tone is huge, warm, spread, and powerful. Conn 12M Pre War Mulligan-era Transitional Baritone Saxophone 256716 Old Pads
This Conn 12M, if it were a dog, would be a grey-muzzled golden retriever waiting for you on the porch. Its seen better days, sure, but it’s got a lot of life and a lot of love left to give. If it were a car, it’s an ancient Oldsmobile, with windows down and 8 track blaring on a summer day. Maybe the belt squeals a bit and maybe it takes a few cranks to start on a cold day, but its been doing that for years and its never let you down.
So yes, this 12M may be rather unsalubrious especially in the mighty company of a lot of the rare and special saxes here at GetASax, and perhaps some less scrupulous sellers might refer to it as a “player’s horn”, but I’m gonna tell you what it is: it’s kind of a beater. But it’s got some fight left, and by golly, it’s got tone to spare. This sax has various and numerous dents, dings, resolders, and the neck looks like it got pulled down and possibly a bit sideways as well at some point. But it’s also got all its parts! And it’s mostly straight where its suppose to be, and mostly curved where its supposed to be. And it makes some saxophone noises- big ones. And it’s a freaking Conn 12M transitional and it sounds like one, at least down to low D or so because it needs some padwork. But its cheap, as far as vintage Conn baritones go, and even after some repairs to get it playable you’ll still be coming in at you-got-a-12m-transitional-for-what??? as far as total investment goes. And have I mentioned its a Conn 12M transitional, just like Gerry Mulligan played? And like that grey-muzzled golden, it won’t even complain when you take it to the vet, because it’s been around long enough to know that means love. And that’s all this horn needs- someone to love it, someone to care, someone to play it. Because it’s got plenty of music left in it.

Conn 12M Transitional Art Deco Engraved Original Silver Plate Baritone
Freshly overhauled Mulligan-era original silver plated Art-deco engraved Conn transitional 12M baritone in great shape. This horn just had a high end overhaul, and it feels like a new horn under the fingers. It has the rare art deco engraving, and it looks gorgeous. It has had several posts resoldered, as you can see, which was part of the overhaul, and done to make it really sturdy and ready for its next 80 years of playing. This horn is just effortless to play, and it sounds warm and full and extremely pleasant. Conns almost feel like a tenor to hold and play, weight wise, which makes them extra fun for the pro bari player. Plus nothing sounds like a Conn 12M. This is fully a 12M in terms of keywork and features, with same side bell keys, X brace and 12M stack and palm keys. These are super hard to find in good shape. I’ve been watching beat up 12M’s needing a $2k overhaul selling over $6k on eBay, so this rare art deco version from the best serial range and already overhauled is definitely a great deal. It will only go up in value. This is the baritone to have.

Conn 12M Transitional Baritone 1932 “First Lacquer” or Old Relacquer Excellent Cond. 253372
This is about as clean as you will ever find a vintage Conn Transitional 12M Baritone. At this serial, we are just before Conn started lacquering its own instruments at the factory, and there’s no engraving besides the Conn logo, so it’s hard to say whether this is a very old relacquer done with vintage nitrocellulose lacquer, or whether it was sold unlacquered, and then lacquered with this finish when it was first sold (a ‘first lacquer’, as we call it). Either way, it was extremely well cared for over its entire first 90 years of life, and it deserves to get the best possible care in its next 90 years of existence. I don’t see any evidence of major damage. Maybe some minor dent work on the back of the body tube that was done well, and the neck receiver was resoldered, which I have to have done on 100% of these Conn baritones that come through the shop anyway, so it’s convenient that it’s done already. The pads are older Selmer style leather ones with brown plastic resonators, and the horn still makes saxophone noises on them, but it’s time for an overhaul. I suspect that it will be on the easier side of jobs for a vintage baritone, because this horn was so well cared for and has virtually no damage – just a couple of tiny dings. The original neck is still in great shape as well.
The reason people love these horns is the tone. The 12M and 12M transitional (which in this case is just a 12M, since there are no real changes to the design that happen after this serial besides the front F that appears around 298k, and everything post 260k or so is called a 12M officially and is identical to this horn– anyway, the 12M’s like this are the most desirable low Bb baritones ever made. It’s wild that you can still buy one for less than an intermediate modern horn. This horn feels like a tenor to hold and play, and the tone is warm and round and velvety. Think Gerry Mulligan or Harry Carney, who both played this model (Mulligan also played a late NWII which plays like this but warmer and more spread, with less comfortable keywork). It’s hard to beat the sound you get one one of these, and the weight difference versus a modern low A is nothing to sniff at. This feels like a horn you could play for hours. A YBS-62 does not, no matter how fancy of a strap you get.

Conn 12M Transitional Baritone Fresh Overhaul Good Condition 244986
This Conn 12M transitional plays extremely well. Just got a complete overhaul including a new neck tenon and receiver, which really improves these 90 year old baritones. It’s SO fun to play. I was rocking out with Stevie Wonder and band on Sir Duke just now and having such a great time. Intonation is good, keywork is just fine, and the horn feels so light on the neckstrap, it’s almost like a tenor. The low register is totally effortless. This bari is basically impossible to beat for the price. Sure there’s some lacquer wear, but as soon as you play one note, ONE NOTE, if you’re like me you’ll forget about that entirely. This saxophone is sold! But click here to see our current selection of baritone and bass saxophones.This is a good example of a Conn transitional 12M baritone saxophone. It has just gotten a fresh repad done by Matt Stohrer and it plays really well. For the repad, Matt used precision pads and screw in (reusable) domed brass resonators (which cost $100 themselves!). It feels very snappy under the fingers and plays effortlessly throughout the range of the instrument. I can’t seem to keep one of these around, however hard I try. Probably because they are just incredible horns with a huge, warm, rich tone that is really impossible to get on any other horn. Check out Gerry Mulligan or Harry Carney, or a host of modern players if you want to see what this horn can do. It’s also a very light horn, and feels much more like a tenor than a baritone in your hands (or around your neck!!).

Conn 12M Transitional Baritone Saxophone 250510 Relacquer Great Player! Mulligan Serial
This is a great Conn 12M Transitional baritone saxophone that comes to you out of the collection of Theo Wanne. I got it from Theo on trade, and it is a fantastic horn. Yes, the lacquer isn’t original, but then again, I haven’t seen a Conn bari this early that was original, fwiw. It had a recent overhaul, and I spent another $500 on it to do a very extensive setup, almost a mini-overhaul. It feels super great now and plays effortlessly with the velvety warmth that you associate with Mulligan, Carney, and the others who played Conns of this vintage. Mulligan made these baritones famous, and alternated between his 189k NWII, and his 250k or so transitional 12M. “Transitional’ usually means that this isn’t the final version of the 12M, but in the case of the baritones, there wasn’t any major keywork change that happened after this model. So this IS a 12M, except that I think the early ones from ’32-33 play with a bigger sound, more like a New Wonder II, but with better keywork and easier tuning. If you just can’t live without a front F mechanism, then you can actually get one put on this horn, and I can help you get it done. But it’s not like that’s a necessity for the vast majority of vintage bari players.
One final thing to mention about this, besides that it’s the best-sounding model of baritone ever made, is that it’s super light to play. It feels almost like a tenor sax in your hands and on your shoulders. I need to weigh it beside a low A Yamaha, but it’s a LOT lighter. This is a great deal at this price, because you get the best serial range bari, with good pads and a fresh setup, needing nothing, for a bargain price just because it had the lacquer redone, and it’s been played enough to have some resolders etc. (Check the photos on full screen mode, and/or email me for a blow by blow description of every little ding if you want.)

You could check yard sales, pawn shops, and local music stores for the rest of your life, and you would likely never come across something this rare, this nice, and this cool. The 26M is the pinnacle of saxophone manufacturing in the United States. It is the most deluxe saxophone ever made by the most highly-skilled craftsmen to have put their hand to this craft. The tone is just excellent. Rich, warm, focused, powerful, and flexible. The ergonomics are actually very modern and great, and they have their own kind of logic that helps you play really fast as you get used to it. Intonation is great too, and these horns are very mouthpiece-friendly. (I like Meyers, Brilharts, and Otto Links on these, of vintage mpcs, and there are many modern options as well.)

SUPER nice, clean, original lacquer, original pads Conn Connqueror 26M alto with all the bells and whistles. Check out Matt Stohrer’s repairman’s overview for some special details on these, and maybe also watch his 6M video for general info on this type of sax. You don’t see many 26M’s for sale ever. And many of those that are sold as original lacquer really aren’t. The original ones look like this – super sharply cut through engraving, dark honey gold lacquer. You can’t beat it! It’s one of the most beautiful saxophones ever made, and also one of the most fun to play.

Desired by players and collectors alike, these rare saxophones come up for sale only infrequently. This particular horn is a time capsule that was discovered sitting across two rafters in an attic in Tennessee, just before an ancient farm house was torn down. In his haste to see what was inside, the excited person who found the case broke the latches. I am told that they can be fixed if you wanted to restore the case, which is in otherwise great shape. This sax had been waiting patiently up there as the decades flowed by in the rooms underneath, people moving in and out, children growing up and having their own children, until finally it was found. It is in totally original condition, with all the factory setup intact, including all the factory pads.

Conn 26M VIII Connqueror Alto Original Lacquer Excellent! 292445
This is a beautiful example of a rare Conn Connqueror 26M Alto saxophone with original lacquer and VIII stamp. The Connqueror is the most mechanically sophisticated saxophone that Conn ever made. It is a pre-war 6M body tube and neck, with all new keywork design, extra engraving, and solid silver on all the key touches that are not pearl. The ‘permadjust’ system is the big development on the Connqueror altos. You can read about that on Matt Stohrer’s website, or watch his repairman’s overview of the 26M on Youtube. This one has its bits and bobs intact, and is in very good condition. It just got overhauled before I bought it, so the pads are all new! Cosmetically, this horn is just great, with only some minor lacquer wear. It has to be one of the nicest 26M Connqueror altos out there. Definitely the nicest one for sale currently, and priced very reasonably. I really like this one.

But click HERE to see our current selection of alto saxophones.This is a rare and beautiful Conn 26M “Connqueror” alto saxophone, from one of the last pre-war batches, with the “VIII” stamp on both the body and the neck. This saxophone sports what is arguably the finest craftsmanship of any model of saxophone ever made, with sterling silver key touches on the Eb/C cluster, the side F#, the side Bb-C-E keys, and the palm keys. The mechanism is complex but extremely well thought-out, and a meticulous and thoughtful repairer can overhaul these so that they last for a decade or more per overhaul with only minor adjustments to the perma-just feet over time- just as Conn intended. These saxophones are also beautiful, with a particularly elaborate version of the famous “naked lady” found on Conn 6M/10M saxophones on the bell.
This particular instrument is in extremely good condition with original finish. The engraving, which is very detailed and is particularly dense, is a good indicator of how much use these saxophones have seen, with the lacquer around the cuts tending to be the first to wear on the saxophone. The lacquer around the engraving on this saxophone is fully intact, which combined with only light evidence of playing wear elsewhere on the horn- such as small bit of lacquer wear near the thumbrest about the size of a pea, and some small scratches here and there- leads me to believe this saxophone was played for at least a few years by a meticulous and caring owner. The neck is in excellent condition, showing no evidence of past repair or pulldown.
The rollers are fully intact and in perfect condition, and the pearls and sterling silver touchpieces are largely unworn. The keys are tight and the horn plays well on what seems to be an older repad, though the it looks to have been played little and/or taken very good care of since the repad. The neck and body are both marked with the VIII stamp, which is viewed as the most desirable of the pre-war M series saxophones, although theories vary widely as to what exactly the VIII stamp means, the most popular of which being that the neck had a slightly different taper that intonates better. The microtuner on the is fully functional, leak-free, and smooth. The body shows so evidence of past damage or major repairs/resolders of any kind.All in all, this is a beautiful and rare saxophone in uncommonly fine condition, with a unique mechanism and design that took extreme skill to manufacture- skill that only really existed for a short time, at Conn in the 1930s. They didn’t make many of these, and there probably won’t be anything like them ever made again.

Bargain price on a beautiful Conn Connstellation 28M alto. This is Conn’s last great innovation in alto saxophones, and it should be a part of any good collection of American saxophones. Conn 30M Connqueror Tenor Beautiful Original Lacquer Original Pads Amazing
This GORGEOUS Original lacquer Conn 30M Connqueror tenor saxophone is in remarkably good original condition. It has nearly all its original lacquer intact, and it has no dents or dings. I got some small dings removed from the back of the bow area, top of the neck, and one opposite the lyre holder. It came out nicely, and looks fantastic. It’s very hard to find a 30M at all, let alone one like this. And it’s also priced very reasonably given the condition. I’m sorely tempted to keep this one myself. The original case is nice too. You probably know all about 30M’s, but if not, watch Matt Stohrer’s videos on them, and you’ll know most of the important stuff. Nothing plays like a 10M/30M. They kind of spoil you for every other tenor saxophone.

Conn 30M Connqueror Tenor Saxophone 1936 Relacquered Plays Great! 275847
The Conn 30M. If you’re reading this, you probably know what this is already. It’s the more deluxe version of the best vintage tenor by Conn, the Conn 10M. The 30M is a 10M plus lots of keywork upgrades including ‘permadjust’ screws throughout, rather than traditional adjustment materials between key linkages; solid silver key touches on spatula and side keys, and a newly designed pinky table and neck octave key. This is the saxophone geek’s dream horn. It is also one of the best sounding tenors ever produced, without any doubt.
This particular example is refinished, obviously, and then it got a recent overhaul done by the good people at SaxAlley in Colorado. They used a wide, flat pad that looks like a Conn Reso-pad, but is solid throughout, so it feels snappy and positive instead of the soft, squishy feel of a normal reso-pad. This is an improvement. There is some kind of dark leather sealant on the pads that makes them look weird, but hey, they are sealing well, and the horn feels quite good under the fingers, so I’m not going to mess with success here. The response is quick, and the tone is saturated throughout. The low register is particularly nice. Subtone and ballad playing is very easy, and this Conn 30M can play softly while still sounding full and rich. There is really no upper limit to the volume. You’re the only limiting variable here.
If you’re looking for a great player’s tenor that is much cheaper than a normal 30M even though it is in good playing condition, and that sounds great all-around, then this may be the horn for you. It came to me in a pretty worn old Conn case, so if you want to upgrade the case, I’m happy to cut you a good deal on a new case for it. I like the BAM Classic for Conns, as the foam is great quality, and the cut out in the interior allows the bell keys to fit without a whole lot of squishing necessary.
Just for fun, here’s Dexter Gordon putting a 10M from the same era through its paces. (The mouthpiece is a Hollywood Dukoff, which I also have for sale, if you are looking.) The sound mixing guy who recorded Dex always had to dial him back a lot. There really is no limit to the volume on a Conn 30M tenor.

It’s everything you like about a 10M, but more so. It has rolled tone holes, and everything that your hands touch is either pearl or solid silver. This is a very clean saxophone, with no dents or dings anywhere. There are no resolders either. There are no past repairs that I can see. The original neck has not been pulled down. It has had a pickup removed by TenorMadness. They are the best in the world, and this neck is now 100% good as new. The repair is so perfect that it matches the neck inside and out 100%. See the pictures below. The original lacquer is almost all present. It has really nice elaborate engraving. There is almost no lacquer wear on the bell.
