Conn 30M Tenor Connqueror Original Lacquer Fresh Overhaul Great!

This is among the nicest 30M’s that I have had for sale in a long time! It has a fresh high-end overhaul! There is nothing like a Conn 30M for beauty, build quality, and a big, powerful Jazz Era tone. In my opinion, if you can get a nice vintage Conn to play, you should.

Conn 30M Tenor Near Mint Original with Matt Stohrer Overhaul!

This is among the nicest 30M’s that I have seen. It came in with original pads from almost 75 years ago, and after a full overhaul by Matt Stohrer, it turned out to be an outstanding player. There is nothing like a Conn 30M for beauty, build quality, and a big, powerful Jazz Era tone. And despite what you may think, the keywork on a 10M/30M is actually very fast when properly setup. In my opinion, if you can get a nice vintage Conn to play, you should.

We pay the best prices for great saxophones.

This is a nice early 30M Tenor Saxophone with a fresh overhaul done by Aaron Barnard. Aaron used pisoni premium pads and TenorMadness domed metal resonators, and the horn feels very good under the fingers, and plays GREAT with a big 30M sound. This horn has been relacquered gently at some point. Note that the engraving still looks very good. There is no sign of heavy buffing anywhere on the instrument, and all of the rolled tone holes look just like they would on an original lacquer Conn. This should be a great deal for someone who wants the best vintage Conn 10M/30M tone for the money.

The Conn 30M is the most super-deluxe saxophone model that Conn ever produced, and is at least a strong contender for the pinnacle of American saxophone manufacturing. Desired by players and collectors alike, these rare saxophones come up for sale only infrequently. This particular horn has a recent overhaul (not sure who did it), and the work feels good under the fingers. The pads are in excellent shape and have not been played much. The tone is classic 10M/30M Conn, which, if you have never played one, is hard to describe, but is big, dark, full, complex, with power when necessary, but easy to play softly as well. More focused than an older Conn, but more spread than any modern horn, able to fill a room easily. Dexter Gordon got his signature tone first of all by being Dexter Gordon, but his Conn 30M (and sometimes 10M) together with a vintage Dukoff Hollywood helped quite a bit.

This is easily the nicest 30M that I have ever seen. It’s in mint/near mint condition and is SN# 292xxx. It’s original lacquer, of course, and it has all of its bits and bobs intact. The pads have hardly been played on since they were replaced, but I am told that this was around 25 years ago. It comes in the original case, which looks as good as the horn itself.

Desired by players and collectors alike, these rare saxophones come up for sale only infrequently. There are no past repairs at all on this horn. The original neck is perfect, there were no dents removed, no resolders. It’s one of the cleanest vintage Conns that I have seen. It is original lacquer, aged to a dark molasses color, and there is barely any play wear to speak of either. The keywork is perfectly tight, and everything is just as it should be. Comparing it to an original factory setup 30M I have in the closet, I would say that this horn is just as it should be, or even better.

Conn 30M Tenor Saxophone Good Condition Original Lacquer 300198

This is a rare and deluxe Conn 30M Connqueror tenor saxophone from 1941, which is one of the best years for Conn saxophones. This tenor has original lacquer and all the crazy extra features that set the ‘Connqueror’ saxophones apart. They’re some of the coolest of all vintage saxophones– everything you touch on the keys is either thick solid silver inlay or mother of pearl. The engraving is deluxe – more than double what is on a 10M, and the keywork is entirely redesigned. The cool thing about the Conn 30M keywork is the ‘permadjust’ mechanism. The big idea here is that once you get the horn correctly setup, all the adjustments can be locked in using a set of disks attached to very fine adjustment screws, which also are locked in place using locking screws. Then the horn’s setup is permanently locked in – no corks or felts to compress, and minimal maintenance needed. Instead of having to install, sand, remove, re-sand, reinstall, and replace corks, your repair shop just needs to turn the right screw a tiny bit in order to setup the horn. Then, if you play the horn till the pads are worn out, you can still just swap out pads without needing to completely overhaul the saxophone for a very long time.

Tonally, the 30M is almost exactly like a 10M. All the geometry of the bore / neck / tone holes is the same as far as anyone can tell. The left hand pinky table / spatula keys if you’re too cool to say ‘pinky’, is angled quite differently on the 30M compared to the 10M. It’s ‘flatter’ and wider, with more rounded edges. Both designs are easy to play, and it isn’t hard to switch between them. There are no other key feel differences between 10M and 30M.

This particular 30M has had some dents removed from the bow area, and maybe a small ding removed from the side of the neck. Besides that, it has nearly all of its original lacquer and hasn’t been played that much since new. The pads are new, but it was repadded before I got it, and could use some additional dialing in of the permadjust mechanism. I’ll get that done eventually, but in the meantime, I just priced it low for an original lacquer 30M (they usually sell about $1500 higher than this), so that you can get whatever you want done yourself and still come out ahead.

This is a rare Conn 30M Tenor saxophone in silver plate. It has the special engraving that only the silver plated 30M’s have, which is different from either of the two main patterns that the lacquered 30M’s had (pre and post 285xxx approximately). One big difference with the plated ones is the multiple pentagons above the lady engraving. I got this horn from the original owner, who lives just outside Elkhart, IN, whose wife special-ordered it from Conn. I have seen other unusual, special ordered Conns that had no serial number, and this one fits that bill. There is no stamp at all under the thumb hook, and no sign of anything having been there. Cosmetically, virtually all of the original silver is intact. This horn needs a full overhaul and is currently waiting in line for one by Matt Stohrer.

Conn 4M Curved Soprano RARE Late Example 244750 Matt Stohrer Overhaul Exceptional!

If you want the best, the most beautiful, the rarest, and the highest quality overhaul all in one soprano, then this is the one for you. You can get a ‘normal’ conn curved soprano for a lot less, but it will not be like this. This Conn curved soprano is for the connoisseur, the collector, and the discerning player.

The general rule for buying these, in my view, is to get the latest curved soprano that you can find. I only know of a few individual instruments with later serial numbers than this. You could probably count the total number that were made after this one in the single digits. This is only the second one that I have seen in person, and it is by far the nicest one I have seen. Like every Conn curved soprano it had a couple of key guard feet resoldered, and that is it for past repairs. They look good, and are not at all glaring. The neck is particularly nice. The bell flare and body tube are undamaged.

It just got a complete overhaul and gentle hand polish and cleaning done by Matt Stohrer, Conn enthusiast and my personal favorite repairman for Conn overhauls. Matt’s work needs no introduction, but you can find his website here, and his youtube channel here, complete with several Conn-specific repariman’s overview videos. I got the silver plate touched up in a couple of places where it was starting to show some wear, and I got the gold wash in the bell redone also, though there was still some gold in there to start with. The resonators are the nice, reusable, high-end TenorMadness set, flattened for an authentic look. They look great. An overhaul is a big job, and that’s now done, so this horn is back to factory fresh or better playing condition. Better, because Matt’s pad work feels better than the reso-pad job found on these originally. It’s tight, snappy, and positive under the fingers. Pad heights are just right, and all the little details that distinguish a really good overhaul from a mediocre one are present and correct on this horn.

Playing wise, this soprano is a monster. It’s warm, round, broad, and room-filling, even at low volumes. When pushed, it is almost too loud. It wants to project over a band. The tone is completely different from modern sopranos. Much more warm and medium-dark, almost like a larger saxophone voice squeezed into the small soprano body. The intonation is quite good, and this works well with a wider range of mouthpieces than many sopranos. I used my Bilger Morgan, and it sounds great. But a modern Yanagisawa HR or even a vintage Buescher will all work, so there’s a good range. This is easily one of my favorite vintage sopranos that I have ever played. If you are looking for a new dimension to add to your playing, a curved soprano like this is interesting and stimulating. A whole fresh world to explore. It also looks great on stage, and catches eyes if you’re a full time performer.

This beautiful instrument comes in its original case, also in good condition.

Just for fun, here’s a clip Dave Koz playing his silver Conn curved soprano with postmodern jukebox. Also, be sure to check out Keenan McKenzie’s curved Conn soprano playing in a 30’s swing setting. So great, and tons of fun!

Conn 6M ‘transitional’ Alto Saxophone from 1934

Wow, this is a clean, first year Conn 6M alto in outstanding original condition. If you have been looking for one of these to buy and get repadded, this would be very hard to beat. It’s super clean, beautiful, and undamaged. Nearly pristine. I personally play an alto much like this one, and this is in my opinion the best vintage for Conn altos. They play bigger and take the lead alto role more readily than any other vintage alto bar none. And Conn saxophones remain the saxophones with the best reliability and build quality ever. Email if you have any specific questions about this horn. I’d love to talk to you.

This is a Conn 6M VIII alto saxophone SN# 304xxx (1942) with the VIII stamp on both body and neck. Although it looks like original lacquer, it is a well done relacquer job that managed to preserve virtually all of the original engraving, including the fine details. There is no evidence of heavy buffing and all of the tone holes look good as well. The 6M alto has a great tone – big, warm, powerful, but without being out of control. You can fill a room easily, but the tone also still stays under control if you want it to, moreso than the earlier Conn altos. The 6M’s also have excellent intonation and can even work for classical playing. But they are built for jazz and big band, with the fastest keywork of any saxophone and a tone that really suits the 40’s vibe.

It has nearly all of its original lacquer intact, and it even still has its original pads from 1947, making it just about as near to buying a new Conn alto as one could hope for. The serial is 320xxx which means it still has rolled tone holes. It is a gorgeous horn and is structurally very clean. This horn will play a bit on the current older pads. It is collectible like this, or with an overhaul, it would play HUGE.

Conn 6M Alto Saxophone Near Mint Original Silver Plate Ser# 268xxx This is one of the most beautiful Conn alto styles from the best serial range for Conn altos. It is technically a late late transitional 6M, but I have a copy of the original sales receipt from the original owner, and it was actually sold as a 6M back in the early 1930’s. This horn has been well taken care of. It’s huge, powerful, and will easily fill up a room. This is a great lead alto for jazz, though I have also heard people swear by these for classical repertoire as well. It’s hard to be the slickness of the 6M keywork. The intonation is excellent as well. So for less than the price of a used Yamaha, you’re getting one of the best saxophones ever made, and certainly one of the very best ever made in the USA.

Conn 6M Alto Original Silver Plate 250314 Big Sound

One of the very earliest 6M’s and my favorite vintage as well. Beautiful original silver plate, recent overhaul done by another dealer, who shall remain nameless, but needs a thorough re-setup. The overzealous repairman decided to ‘refresh’ the solder on many of the posts. So there are many posts resoldered. It looks fine, since the horn is silver anyway. Doesn’t seem to be due to damage, just probably one post popped off during the overhaul from the solder being old, and the repairman decided to resolder lots of them as a preventative. I’m reducing the price by $800 to give you room to spend as much as you want on a setup, or even to get it overhauled again.

No real damage, and no problems that I can see. If you want a great looking, super clean Conn 6M, that’s what this is. Original case also in good condition.

This is a pristine, early silver Conn 6M alto saxophone. It has the rare “Metro” stamp on the body, which is probably something like the VIII stamp that came later to distinguish the best horns. The Conn 6M is probably the alto with the fastest keywork of anything made so far. The ergonomics are great, and you get faster as you get more and more used to them. The tone is huge. You can blow down walls if you want, or play softly and sweetly like a 30’s big band alto player. These horns have great intonation too, so you can even use them for classical if your teacher is open-minded!

This is an early 6M-style transitional Conn alto. It is pretty unusual to see same side bell keys this early. This is the earliest non-experimental 6M-style horn that I have seen. Notice also that the left hand pinky cluster is also fully 6M style! Also the rare “1/2 New York neck” (a freshly coined term=no microtuner, but octave key on the bottom), and single wire bell key guard. Pretty cool. These horns are perhaps the most desirable Conn altos for tone, with a bigger and even warmer sound than the later 6M’s but with the fast 6M keywork that everybody loves. This horn can easily fill a room, but it also has a straight-ahead and somewhat focused sound that allows you to keep it under control quite well if you want to. The previous owner used this for classical saxophone, and it does do that well, believe it or not. The intonation is good as well. There’s a reason why people love these transitional altos so much – because they’re great!

This is a mint, extremely early, fully 6M-style transitional silver Conn alto. This is the nicest one that I have seen. All that it needs is a repad. It also has the M neck that seems to play the best of all of the transitional necks, and may be equivalent to the VIII necks of later years.

This is a beautiful, and great-playing Conn transitional alto SN#260xxx in silver plate. It has no damage, and the pads are in great shape and feel good. It has very little wear to the silver – just on the pants guard and a few touch points. There are no dents or past repairs at all. The original neck (stamped M) is in excellent shape and has not been pulled down. All in all, this is a super-clean transitional alto that also has good pads! These horns are perhaps the most desirable Conn altos for tone, with a bigger and even warmer sound than the later 6M’s but with the fast 6M keywork that everybody loves. This horn is a very clean, original silver Conn transitional alto in the primo serial range for 6M style transitionals. It has the M stamped neck (which may be the precursor of the VIII). These horns are perhaps the most desirable Conn altos for tone, with a bigger and even warmer sound than the later 6M’s but with the fast 6M keywork that everybody loves. This is an extremely clean late transitional 6M alto in silver plate. It has no issues at all, and almost 100% of its silver plate intact. All it needs is a repad to be ready to go. See some of the other silver conns in the Museum section of this site if you want to see what it will look like cleaned up. It ships in the original case which is in good condition. The neck is the M stamped one, which seems to be the best playing of the transitional necks. This horn is in line for a repad, but if you want it at a discount to get repadded elsewhere, now’s the time to buy.

This is a excellent condition Conn transitional Alto with split bell keys and the rare, art-deco engraving. The deco engraving like this is found only in a narrow range and is highly desirable among players and collectors alike for the beauty it has, and for the unique combination of tonal characteristics these horns have. These transitional Conns are the best of the vintage Conns in my experience. They have a big, warm tone that is perfect for a wide range of playing. You really can’t get a tone even close to this from any modern horn. When you play this sax, the whole body tube shakes in your hands – you can feel the horn resonating with you! It’s an addictive experience, and it shows how special these horns are. You won’t want to play anything else once you get used to this feeling.

This is a beautiful example of a Conn Transitional alto saxophone. The transitional Conn saxophones came in a variety of flavors, between around 234xxx-270xxx, and “transitioned” between Conn’s earlier New Wonder II models to their Artist models. See here for more information. This particular horn is one of the most desirable versions of a transitional alto, with the coveted geometrical art deco engraving pattern only seen on a subset of transitional horns (and with a smooth, squared-off G# key at this serial range by the way). This horn has no past repairs, no resolders, body is straight, neck is clean and not pulled down, keywork is mechanically tight and moves freely etc. It has spent its life mostly in its case. Pads are old, and it needs a repad (hence the low price), though you can make saxophone noises on it as is.

Nicest 6M Metro (predecessor to the VIII stamp) that I have had for sale and overhauled in a long time. Maybe ever. Pre-war, gorgeous original lacquer, Metro neck. Fresh high-end overhaul that feels great under the fingers. Nothing sounds like a 6M. You get the swivel thumb hook too, that only comes on the earlier Artist altos like this. Maximum projection, power, and warmth, while maintaining just the right amount of focus. This is an exceptional alto, and whoever gets it will be very lucky!

The later 6M’s like this are an excellent value, because they are still well made, but the price is almost laughably low for what you get. I always recommend the 1948-55 or so Conns to people who want a great tone but  who are on a tighter budget. The tone is fantastic – big, wide, with plenty of projection. Intonation is very good, and the keywork is comfortable. There is not a lot to tell condition wise. This horn is in great shape. Original lacquer, neck is in great shape. It looks like there was a small dent removed from the back of the bow, and maybe from behind the lower thumb hook. I hope that I’m in as good shape at 65 years old!

As Bernie Sanders would say, this horn is huge (yooge!). It’s a very big sounding alto that will blast any modern alto out completely out of the water. This has big player’s value because it is one of the biggest playing 6M’s that I have had, and because it has just been totally overhauled and will hold up very well over time. It has all new pads, corks, felts, keys fit mechanically, everything nicely setup, cleaned and oiled.

Maybe it is hard to tell from the photos, but this is one of the most perfect, like new Conn altos that I have ever seen. It comes from a collector in Elkhart, and it is just great– a 10/10 early example in beautiful silver plate. They don’t get much better than this. It’s in as-found shape, meaning I have not swapped out the pads. It actually plays pretty well on them, even though they look like the original pads from 80 years ago. If you want a super-clean 6M transitional that will look amazingly gleaming and brand new when overhauled and gently polished, or if you just want a gorgeous example for your collection while they are still affordable, this would be the one to get.

This is an incredibly stunning example of an art deco engraved original silver plated Conn ‘transitional’ 6M alto saxophone. It cleaned up just as nicely as I hoped it would, with the gold wash all thick and bright. This was basically a time capsule that is now ready for its first owner, more or less. It is a HUGE player with an effortless low register, fat, full upper register, great intonation, and a ton of projection. You can tell I love Conns from this specific period. It’s frankly kind of absurd that you can buy this level of instrument for anything like this price. It holds its own with the best altos you could find, regardless of price. After overhaul, this one was played for about a year, and the owner got the three playing improvements done that really help a 6M of this vintage to be played professionally: First, the thumb rest has a plastic button over it, so it doesn’t hurt your thumb to play for many hours. Second, the thumb hook has been moved slightly higher for comfort. Third, the strap hook has been moved slighty lower so the horn balances on the strap instead of swinging up to your face when you let go (the Conn snakebite). If you want the quintessential lead alto sound that, and a Conn with a recent overhaul that will go nicely for a long time, this is the one to get!

It includes both the Hiscox case in the photos and the vintage Conn case with purple interior shown in the main photo (which is from right after it was overhauled, and before it was played for a year).

Only one available! Who knows when I’ll get another one this clean.

Super DUPER clean Conn art deco engraved ORIGINAL silver plated ‘transitional’ 6M alto saxophone from 1931 in near mint condition with original pads. This alto will get overhauled soon, and the price will be +$1100 to cover the cost of the overhaul (I don’t make any money on overhauls, but the horns like this deserve to have them done right. Otherwise, what’s the point of running this business at all?) I am a huge fan of Conn altos from 1930-1934. They’re my favorites of all time. This horn has a set of hybrid features found only on this particular year of 6M. The main ‘stack’ keywork where your fingers normally go are already anticipating the fast and comfortable style of keywork found on the fully 6M altos, AND both bell keys have moved around to the left, but the left hand pinky (spatula) keys are a modified version of the New Wonder II (Chu Berry) style, albeit a more comfortable version. With the bell keys both on the left, you have direct action closing of those keys, which makes them easier on your pinky. It’s a very comfortable layout, although it looks antequated.

The original finish on this horn is nearly 100% intact. If you want to see what these look like polished up, check out it’s twin brother here that just got overhauled. This engraving style is found only on this particular vintage of Conn, and looks fantastic. The swivel thumb hook also goes away a few years later. If you’re into geeking out on Conns like this, check Matt Stohrer’s article here.

Tonally, this is the essence of a warm but powerful lead alto sound. It easily sails over an entire big band when pushed. These Conns were built for ‘carrying power’ (as the vintage ads say), and they really do project with ease. But they also stay saturated and warm at very low volumes, and the whole instrument vibrates in your hands when you play. There’s nothing like a Conn for tone, power, and build quality. Repairmen love to work on them because they’re built so well. If you want one of the best, this would be worth your consideration for sure!

I love Conn altos in the 230-260k range, and especially the ones near 250k serial. This 247k is a transitional Conn between the New Wonder II (‘Chu Berry’) and the 6M (‘Artist’) models. It is a true transitional in every sense, and is almost half NWII and half 6M. These special alto saxophones have a tone and set of features found nowhere else, and that makes them especially great in several ways. The bore still feels more like a NWII to play, so the tone is wider and wilder than the later 6M’s (which are also great, but are more focused and a bit less wild). The neck is like a 6M, so you get the improved intonation that ‘slots in’ better – NWII’s have good intonation as well, but it is more flexible than the 6M versions. The bell keys have moved around to the left, but the left hand spatula keys retain their NWII shape, but with improved mechanics. No saxophone has an easier or more direct feel on the low B and Bb that this version of Conn. It’s nice and light and fast, though you don’t have anything like modern ergonomics on those keys, of course. The regular main stack keywork is already mostly updated to the fast and comfortable 6M design. That is very good keywork, and is hardly improved upon in modern horns, so this is a very comfortable horn to play.

It came with special ‘art deco’ engraving on the bell that you only see for a short time around 245-249k serial with Conn altos. This example is original or ‘first’ lacquer, and has not been refinished. It has original pads and even comes with the original warranty and care booklet in the original case.

Tonally, these late transitional 6M’s are an ideal choice for big band or jazz band lead alto. They have almost unlimited projection or ‘carrying power’ as the old advertizements put it. And the tone stays strong and cohesive no matter how much you push it. It’s just a joy to hear one of these in full song. Marhsall Royale and the Basie band all played Conns like this, as did Charlie Parker for a while (among many other horns). You see them commonly in clubs in NYC and all over Europe these days. Nothing sounds like a Conn. This one is priced low for what it is. Superb original condition. Add a good overhaul, and you will have one of the best built alto saxophones ever, that will be dependable and fantastic to own and play for many many years to come. If you like this version in silver, I also have a silver 249k that I just got completely overhauled that is also for sale.

Conn 6m Transitional Art Deco Alto Saxophone 249081 Overhauled!

The Conn 6M transitional takes many forms, and this particular original silver plated example is from 1932.  It features art deco engraving (a style which only appears for a couple of years), left hand bell keys, 6M style keywork everywhere except the left hand pinky table, which is New Wonder II style. This is the last iteration before the transitional becomes nearly identical to the 6M, and to my ears these have a bit wider tone of the New Wonder II than the transitionals just after it- and in fact around this serial range is my favorite of the transitionals, playing-wise.

It has just gotten a complete overhaul, and it looks crazy stupid fine! Physically it is in extremely good condition, with no dents or dings or evidence of past repairs that I can see.  The neck is undamaged and shows no signs of past pulldown, and the microtuner is free and functional. The silver plate is thick and unworn, and shined up unbelievably well with a gentle polish! It comes with its original case in good condition and its original warranty card. These are great altos, built by the finest American saxophone craftsmen in their heyday, and a super clean one like this is a great place to start if you are looking for a fantastic vintage horn that will last you a lifetime for less of an overall investment than most any new horn of even middling quality that you can buy today.

                                                  Price just lowered!!

This is one of those super-rare Conn alto saxophones from when Conn was at the height of it’s manufacturing expertise. Conn had the most advanced saxophone manufacturing facility in the world, and it set the standard for quality for all other manufacturers. This alto would have been a special, top-of-the-line model. It has the most elaborate thick burnished finish that is also by far the most time consuming to apply. (Ever burnished anything by hand?) This is original (real, actual) gold plate. (People often think this can’t be real gold, but hey, welcome to the 1930’s where both gold and labor were cheap, and American craftspeople were the best in the world! And there’s the most desirable engraving pattern here also, or at least one of them. For just about a year and a half, Conn did this deluxe ‘art-deco’ geometrical engraving style on its nicer instruments. There’s a lot to see here – it’s a masterpiece of hand engraving that is no longer done at this level by any manufacturer today.

Conns from the early 1930’s are my absolute favorite There was a short burst of gold plate examples mixed in with other horns between 238k-252k, and they are the best of the best in my book.

This is my favorite version of the Conn 6M, and if you are looking for a lead alto sound that is much bigger than anything else ever made, this is the horn for you. You really can’t beat this for tone, carrying power, or overall attractiveness of a lead alto tone. The keywork is also very fast and comfortable. There aren’t many altos of precisely this version, and they are among the best altos ever made for jazz and big band playing. If you don’t believe me, come by and you can play my personal alto, which is exactly like this.

This is a beautiful, all original silver 6M VIII alto. It has all of its original silver plate intact, making it just about as near to buying a new Conn alto as one could hope for. The serial is 309xxx which is an excellent range for Conn 6M’s. It has a rich, lyrical voice, good intonation, and a warm, powerful tone. Many people think of the 6M as a quintessential big band horn, and it can certainly do that well, but it is also much more versatile. You can play everything including classical on a 6M and sound great! It is pretty hard to find a really clean 6M that is not beat up. And it is sooo rare to see one that is truly this nice.

This is a nice original lacquer Conn 6M VIII Alto Saxophone SN 289xxx. The coveted VIII Stamp appears on both body and neck and refers to bench number 8 in the Conn factory whose craftsman’s work was good enough to be worthy of special distinction. This horn has only normal play wear on the lacquer, and it is clear that it was owned by a meticulous person, who always picked it up the same way (see two finger marks on the side of the bell, and thumb mark on the other side) and who hardly touched the lacquer on the rest of the horn. The pearls are still in good condition on the keys, and the keywork is all in excellent condition with all keys straight and moving freely.

This is a beautiful Conn 6M VIII alto with great original lacquer. It comes with a full high end overhaul. If you are relatively new to vintage saxophones, almost all saxophones older than 1990 or so that have been played with any frequency are in need of a labor-intensive process of restoration called an ‘overhaul.’ This does not touch the finish, but it completely replaces everything that needs to be replaced to put the saxophone back to factory fresh mechanical and playing condition. If you do it right, (which is a big if) then the horn can even be better than new mechanically and playing wise. That’s what this horn is getting right now. It costs about $1000+ to have done right, because it involves at least 25-30 hours of skilled labor.

This Conn 6M VII is really the one you want. It is in excellent condition, original lacquer, no resolders, no serious past repairs at all (a few small dings removed). As soon as it comes back from overhaul in a week or two, it is going to be AMAZING! Conns are very consistent from horn to horn once you fix everything mechanically. This one will be no exception. Even on original pads when I got it from a collector, it played really big. It is medium-focused, and very free blowing. Intonation is excellent. Keywork is fast. It comes with a BAM Classic alto case or similar, (we can discuss) to keep it safe when you are not playing it (which won’t be that much of the time, based on how these play!)

Conn 6M VIII Alto Saxophone 1942 Original Lacquer Pre-war Excellent Condition!

This Conn 6M is the most desirable version, with the VIII stamp on the neck, and the entire saxophone is in excellent condition. It is all original – including neck, pads, original lacquer, and original case. The pads are completely done and you’ll have to overhaul this to play your first note on it. It would be hard to find a better overhaul candidate. Usually there’s at least one resolder, but the only thing I can see that has ever happened to this alto is a small dent removed from the back of the bow which is now nearly invisible.

The neck is gorgeous, body tube, bow, and bell are all dent free and beautiful. The engraving really pops on this horn, and the lacquer has a luster that you don’t always see. The reason this Conn 6M alto is in such great condition, is that the original owner bought it in early 1942, (just before Conn stopped producing saxophones to start making alitmeters for the war effort), and then he enlisted and went off to war. When he came back, he bought a Conn 10M tenor saxophone  and played that instead. The 10M is in nearly as good condition, though it’s not original lacquer like this alto is.

Conn 6M altos are amazingly consistent from horn to horn. Just get it properly overhauled, and it will be a really lively, projecting, room-filling lead alto that sails over a band with ease. There’s nothing like a Conn in full song. Plus, as you may know, the keywork layout on the 6M is very comfortable and fast under the fingers. In an alternate universe where Conn kept making saxophones during WWII and Selmer stopped making saxophones to fight the Nazis, Conn’s keywork design would have become what you see on all modern saxophones. It’s that good. I prefer Conns to Selmers on alto, generally speaking, and my favorites are these pre-war 6M’s. They’re just so fun to play. The horn comes alive in your hands, the body tube vibrates in response to the sound, and there really is no limit to the amount of sound you can get out when pushed. People come in the shop and play the Conns, and they are regularly blown away.

I have some other, very similar altos right now that also come with the full overhaul / restoration included in the price. You can see the selection of Conns available here. There are also some in other finishes like silver plate or even gold plate.

Just for fun, here’s Marshal Royal and the Basie Band (all of whom used Conns) playing a ballad on his 6M.

This is a mint/ near mint condition Conn 6M VIII alto saxophone. It has nearly all of its original lacquer intact, with just a little wear on the neck. Both body and neck are stamped VIII, which is the more desirable version of the 6M. This is also a desirable early serial number 6M. It has rolled tone holes, of course. This horn is super clean, with no dents or past repairs at all. It needs a repad, and is being sold as-is for now, until it makes its way up in line for an overhaul. It comes in the original case which is also in near mint condition, and it also includes the original Conn mouthpiece.

This is just about the most perfect pre-war Conn 6M that I have seen. It is completely original with original pads intact as well. If you want the best, then look no further. These altos are SO great with a good overhaul. I just got the 285k 6M VIII overhauled, and it is a fresh reminder just how great Conn saxophones of this period are. Put it next to anything, and it’s not even a fair fight. Even my beloved Super 20’s can’t match the raw power, and the vibration of a Conn. It projects while staying warm and dark, yet still cuts through like an ideal lead alto. Works with lots of mouthpieces, including Meyers, Otto Links, and even Selmer style pieces. If you want the best condition 6M possible, this is the one! It will probably be years before I see its equal!

BEAUTIFUL example of an original lacquer ‘Pre-war’ Conn 6M VIII Alto saxophone in extremely fine original condition with original pads. It’s about as clean an example as you are ever likely to find. It had one dent removed from the body tube (nearly invisible now), and that’s it for past repairs or damage over its entire first 80 years of existence.

These altos remain an absolute bargain. They’re among the best playing alto saxophones ever made, with a bigger, wider, more powerful tone than almost anything out there. And yet the keywork is very fast and comfortable, and the intonation is excellent. It’s the perfect lead alto horn. It’s also made in USA at the height of US manufacturing, and has a build quality that has hardly been matched since. This is the desirable version with the VIII stamped neck, which tends to sell for more than the later versions without the stamp. They’re all great, so if you’re on a budget, check out the beautiful 320k post war example that is also for sale. This is original pads, so plan to get it repadded.

Response is really quick, the keywork is fast and comfortable, the intonation is great, and the tone really carries over a section. It plays really well on the existing pads. It’s not a fresh overhaul, but it’s a good one, and it has a lot of playing time left. For what you get, this is hard to beat for an all-purpose alto that sounds great. It’s much wider, richer, and warmer than any modern alto on the market, and in an alternate universe, its keywork style would have become what all saxophones have. It’s fast and efficient once you get used to it.

This pre-war (from the American perspective, meaning prior to the government order than restricted the manufacture of musical instruments along with anything else made out of brass) Conn 6M was built in 1941, and is the desirable “VIII” version, with the VIII stamp on both the body and neck.

It is in very good physical condition with original lacquer, no dents, and no major or minor past repairs or resolders, with the exception of a repaired dent on the bowguard, which is visible in the photos.  It has what appears to be a recent repad, or perhaps an old repad that wasn’t played much after it was done, and Conn Res-o-pads were used. It plays well with a big voice, and although to my professionally-obligated-to-be-picky tastes it is not quite as astoundingly slick under the fingers at these feel when they have been overhauled as the best repairers can do, it is definitely playable as-is and will beat the pants off of most any challenger, especially modern imports that cost a lot more and give you a lot less than this fine example of vintage American saxophone craftsmanship.

Oddly, the lacquer on the neck is more worn than the rest of the horn- although physically the neck is in immaculate condition with no dents or past pulldowns.  In the past when I have seen this the culprit is usually a homemade neck bag that was lacquer-unfriendly, or perhaps the owner had a habit during rests to hold the horn with the neck in his hand.  Given the lack of wear elsewhere on the horn, I’d guess a neck bag was the culprit here, although I can’t be certain. But again, though the lacquer itself is mostly gone from the neck (and the neck alone), the neck tube is flawless and there are no signs of past repairs of any kind.

The microtuner is free and functional, and all of the original rollers and present and moving freely.  The engraving is crisp and clear with no lacquer loss, and the pearls seems largely unworn. The keywork is tight and the body is straight.  This is a very clean example of the most desirable vintage of the most desirable variant of the Conn 6M, and it can be yours for less than a new Yamaha YAS-26.

Incredible Pre-war Conn 6M VIII in silver plate. You rarely see silver plated instruments before WWII stopped conn production in mid 1942. This one from 1938-39 is in gorgeous condition with original silver plate nearly 100%. The pads are older. Plan on a repad. The neck is great condition also with no damage. No past repairs. Interestingly, this appears to have been special ordered with a second strap hook, which makes the horn balance like a modern alto. I have never seen this before on a Conn, but I’m certain that this is factory original, as the plating matches and there is no sign of aftermarket soldering at all. Pretty cool!

This is a wonderful and extremely rare example of a very late serial Conn 8M C Melody saxophone with the ‘Artist’ / ‘Naked Lady’ engraving pattern on the bell. It’s gorgeous original silver plate finish with gold wash in the bell. It just got a full top-shelf overhaul with Italian leather Pisoni pads and nice sent of screw in reusable flat metal (brass) resonators. If you want a really good C melody for less money, look for a late New Wonder II Conn – around 200k serial if you can find one. This particular late serial version is ultra-rare — I’ve only seen 7 of them ever. This is the latest one I’ve ever sold. The cool thing about the later Conn C melody saxophones is that the tone opens up and gets really big and projecting like a tenor. If you use a GS RESO C Melody mouthpiece on this horn, you can get a tone that you just can’t get on any other type of saxophone. It’s in C but it’s fat and full and open like a tenor, but it concert pitch. Nothing else sounds like this. I had Tyler do a demo with one of my Conn C melodys and the GS RESO, so that you can get a basic idea of what it can sound like. Tyler had never played a C melody before, so I think he did pretty well for his first time!

Well, here is a horn that is super-incredibly-vanishingly rare. It’s a transitional Conn 8M C Melody. For those of us who care about the C Melody saxophone, this gets our blood pumping. There are only a handful of these horns out there, in all likelihood, and this one has to be one of the nicest, because it’s in such great condition including the original case. It got a recent overhaul, and it looks very good! Besides being collectible, the later C Melody saxophones are also the best players. This is a burning player with a big sound and nothing stuffy or muted about it. It plays like a good Conn should: Big, bold, warm, spread, resonant. What a saxophone!

Conn 94M DJH Modified Tenor Saxophone Keilwerth Made Excellent Pro Tenor!

Getting a complete high end overhaul right now! This is in the hard-to-beat-for-the-price category for sure. Made by Keilwerth for Conn, this is like a Couf Superba 1 with straight tone holes and Conn 10M engraving. As you may know already, the Superba 1 is one of my favorite tenors. I’m not surprised that when Conn wanted to add a new professional instrument to its line, it went with the Keilwerth. It is the most like a Conn of any modern horn, and it is well made, tunes well, feels great undet the fingers. It really checks all the boxes of what you might want in a tenor.

This particular example has original lacquer and no resolders. It is getting overhauled right now, which is a big job – 30+ hours of highly-skilled labor goes into a good overhaul, and that means the horn will play its very best with all new everything, for a long time into the future. It’s a joy to play a horn like this with a fresh overhaul. Just the work costs around $1100-1500 to do everything, which means you are getting an excellent value. The horn itself is less than half the price!  Buy it now to reserve it. It should be ready in the next 2-3 weeks (so June 2019).

Original satin silver plate with gold wash in the bell. It’s been played a lot, because it plays well!  The fresh overhaul feels great under the fingers. This is a horn that needs nothing and plays its best right out of the case. It has flat metal reso-techs and Pisoni leather pads, strap hook moved for balance, and the desirable art deco engraving.

The 238-247k serial range is among the most prized among tenor players who love Conns. These tenors have a huge sound like the New Wonder II, but some key work and tuning improvements looking toward the 10M. This is a really fine playing example that should make anyone happy who wants a huge Conn tone on a horn that they don’t have to overhaul or plan on spending any money on anytime in the near future. Only one available!

Of C melody’s it’s one of the best ever made, and it very nearly maxes out every possible category in which you could rate it. In terms of rarity, this is just about the end of the line for the Conn C Melody. I have a 243xxx in my personal collection, and they may have made a very small number of later special ordered C Melodies, but not many. Tonally this horn has such a big, warm, rich sound. If you have only read about C Melodies on the internet, then forget what you have read before and think of a completely different saxophone – not an alto, bigger, louder, warmer – but not a tenor – more centered, almost cello-like in the richness and vocal quality of the sound. This is a turn key purchase for a beautiful, rare, and great-playing vintage saxophone. Get it now – there’s only one available!

Conns from the 1920’s like this have an enthusiastic following these days. I’m told that it’s now more common to see a tenor player in NYC playing a Conn than a Selmer, which is hard to believe if true. I have definitely noticed a large and growing amount of interest and enthusiasm for Conns like this over the last 5 years at least.

The way I think about vintage Conn tenors is this. They are all built quite well, and they are all good players once you get them all fixed up and overhauled. So if you have the choice, and budget allows, you might as well buy the nicest one you can to fix up. This is for a couple of reasons. First, resale value will always be better the more beautiful the horn is, and the rarer the finish. Second, you get to experience the satisfaction, even joy, of owning such a beautiful piece of craftsmanship from the world’s greatest musical instrument factory of the 20’s and 30’s, which is undoubtedly Conn. Conn set the standard for musical instrument manufacturing during that time. Its designs were copied by all the other makers, from France to Germany, Italy, and even eventually Japan. They are still being copied today in fact!

If your goal is to get the best, most beautiful, rarest Conn that you can, it would be hard to do better than this beautiful burnished gold Conn New Wonder 1 ‘Chu Berry’ tenor saxophone from 1924. The finish is a bit tarnished at present, because I haven’t had time to get it disassembled, cleaned, and polished yet, but there’s a lot of original gold plate there, and not a whole lot of finish wear. The burnished (bright) gold Conns like this are incredibly rare. Much rarer than the satin gold examples, which are themselves very rare. The engraving is striking. Each burnished gold Conn had the option for a custom portrait. I wonder whose sweetheart this is! Some stylish flapper 20’s lady in any case. This would almost definitely have been pro-owned by the tenor player from a big band. I got the horn from Ohio, if there’s anyone who can connect the dots at all. I have never seen any other Conn tenor with engraving like this, so it has some historical value as well, to me at least.

This tenor comes in pretty good playing condition. It was tuned up before I got it, and I’ll probably spend some more money on pad work before I sell it. It also includes a nice Hiscox case with my favorite, the red interior, which is no longer offered. Much better than the blue for a gold saxophone.

Just for fun, here’s Lester Young on his New Wonder 1 tenor just like this one, also gold plated. The wide, lush, spread, medium dark tone is just gorgeous.

                                                                        • Sold Out

Conn Chu Berry NW1 Baritone Saxophone Gold Plate Stunning Original Gold Added High E-F 104836

Just fully overhauled! This saxophone restoration was a labor of love, and included not only a complete mechanical overhaul, but also fabricating keywork to fit the added high E and F that this saxophone has. It also got a re-shaped high F key touch and G# key touch, as well as a custom made front F mechanism. All of the custom keywork was also gold plated to match the horn, and it all looks great! The overhaul was the standard high-end job, including a thorough cleaning, gentle hand polish, new oil, all new pads, felts, cork, thorough setup, a beautiful set of custom made TenorMadness slightly domed brass reusable resonators, medium sized, and a careful neck fit, so the neck seals just right in the receiver (which is important on any saxophone, but isn’t always done.). So all that work was definitely a big job, and took several months, but really this horn deserved it. It’s one of the most beautiful saxophones of any kind that I have seen, and it really needed to be put into top condition.

The result is glorious! It feels great under the fingers – dry and snappy like a new sax. The low register response is effortless. Upper register pops out. The intonation is pretty good, but not perfect. With my large chamber mouthpieces, it tunes quite well at low, middle and high Bb, with the usual quirks here and there – middle D is sharp, octave A is sharp etc. You can adjust your throat and get used to it just fine. And the full, warm, spread, lush tone that you get makes it totally worth it! There’s nothing like a Conn baritone for sound. That’s why pros still covet these instruments so highly, so many years later.

It would be hard to find a nicer Conn baritone than this. The thick burnished gold that Conn used is a different color than I experience in any other part of daily life. It glows! And the engraving on this baritone is the most delicate and tasteful that I have seen. This is as good as it gets for Conn engraving quality. Some engraving is just decoration, but this takes it to the level of an actual art form.

There’s certainly only one available. The price including the thorough, top-shelf restoration is very reasonable. Conn baritones are in short supply, and this one is priced in the mid range despite being exceptionally nice. If you want to get it with a new BAM Hightech case for safe shipping/gigging, I’m happy to give you one at a big discount. Just message me.

Gerry Mulligan plays his 1927 Conn baritone saxophone in gold plate
