Conn 6M ‘Transitional’ Alto Original Silver Plate Stohrer Overhaul!

Super example of a golden age Conn alto with a fresh Matt Stohrer overhaul.

Description

This is a beautiful Conn 6M transitional alto in original silver plate. It has an expensive, and thorough mechanical overhaul done by Matt Stohrer a couple of years ago, and it has only been played eateor a few hours since the overhaul, so besides a tiny bit of tarnish, it’s basically in totally freshly-overhauled condition! Matt’s work is so good that people all over the world are ok waiting years for a spot at the front of the line. So you can get this horn and know that it is actually right! Everything is smooth and properly fitted, and the pads feel dry and snappy under the fingers. It’s just a joy to play!

There’s not much to mention by way of condition. Almost all the original silver plate is intact. One foot of the low Eb key guard is resoldered. That’s about it! Interestingly, this horn looks like a 260xxx serial, but it is stamped 206xxx, so I think the serial number was stamped wrongly, and they put an X after the normal serial number to denote a duplicate serial. For those of your who keep up with such things, this horn has the Std’ M neck, which might be a precursor of the desirable VIII stamped neck on later 6Ms.

Tonally, what you are looking at here is one of the best sounding altos ever made. It’s the quintessential lead alto, and can cut through a section with ease, but it also plays sweetly, delicately, and with focus when you want it to. It basically opens up your playing options about as widely as they could be. It is very easy to play a fully saturated pianissimo on this horn, or to roar and feel the whole thing vibrate in your hands. This is the golden age of Conn’s saxophone manufacturing, and these horns are just tops on all counts. The fast, ‘Artist’ model keywork design is very comfortable all the way through, and is ergonomic to play, once you get used to it. The intonation slots right in very nicely. I collect altos like this myself. I’m glad that there are still some nice ones around that people can enjoy, because there is nothing made today that sounds even remotely close to the tone you get on a Conn.
