This is one of the nicer original lacquer Transitional tenors that I have seen. It is also one of the earliest original lacquer Conns that I have seen come through, because Conn didn’t lacquer saxophones until just before this one was made. This kind of clean horn does not come along often from the early 1930’s and is a solid deal for someone looking for a top quality vintage Conn. This is not your run of the mill, beat up old Conn tenor. Very few of the remaining horns out there are both in the prime serial range for split bell key transitionals (around 250xxx) and also in good original physical condition. Good physical condition all the way down to the details of the horn is what you will NOT often find on ebay or similar places, and it is what you will find here.

It is also one of the earliest original lacquer Conns that I have seen come through, because Conn didn’t lacquer saxophones until just before this one was made. In terms of cosmetic issues, there are 2 small dings on the neck, and it has some very minor pull down that has been set right (like about a 2 on a scale of 1 to 10) and there are some stand scratches on the bell. There’s a little bit of cosmetic corrosion on a couple of the posts on the body, and that’s about it. This horn is original pads and needs an overhaul, but it should be an easy and straightforward overhaul. It actually has a big and full voice even on the original pads, so it is obvious that this will be a superb Conn when it is done.

This turns out to be the difference between a horn that plays well and is easy and inexpensive to own, and one that is a pain to own, play, and struggle with. So get this one, and start having fun with one of the best and biggest sounding tenor saxophones ever made.
