Description
The Selmer Reference 54 alto is a perfect choice for a pro alto for a serious player. It does jazz well, and it does classical well. And finding a nice used one can be a challenge.
The modern high-end Selmers are definitely a case of “buy used and save the difference.” The cheapest online new price I could find on one is $6849.00. This one is in near mint condition with only the slightest signs of use (see many photos below).
This horn is in beautiful shape with gorgeous engraving and lacquer, and the tone really is reminiscent of the Mark VI vibe. Intonation and ergonomics are modern and better than a VI, so it’s a great horn for a whole range of people interested in a pro alto. There’s a good reason that these horns are so popular! They have the best tone of any of the modern Selmers (in my opinion).
This horn has not been played much, and pads are in quite good shape. This was just tuned up, so it comes to you playing just like a new Selmer. It looks pretty much like a new saxophone. This is a turn-key purchase on a beautiful near mint Reference 54 alto for way less than the price of a new one. It comes in the original (somewhat scuffed) Selmer case which is both light and protective.
