Selmer Super Balanced Action Tenor 40xxx 1949 Overhauled

Selmer Super Balanced Action Tenor 40638. This horn has been relacquered, but besides the new coat of paint, it is almost as nice as a new horn. It just had a superb top-shelf overhaul and has had no significant past damage. This horn is tight and ready to go, and has that sound.

Description

The Selmer Super Balanced Action tenor is among the most desirable tenor saxophones ever. And for good reason. It’s the horn Coltrane famously played for many years (up until around 1965), and the horn Branford Marsalis and many others play today. It has the classic Selmer tone that, whether you know it or not, is already in your ears from all those classic Blue Note era recordings. Hank Mobley on Soul Station is one for me among many others.

This is one of the best playing SBAs that I have played. It would be priced at double what it is right now, if it had not gotten a new coat of paint at some point. As it is, it is priced less than a new Selmer Reference tenor, and this horn is twice the player. It has a fresh, top-shelf overhaul – the kind of overhaul you can’t usually get because the guys who do them are too busy. It is mechanically tight, with all necessary work done. It’s ready to go for the next generation with only regular maintenance needed down the road. The pads feel dry and snappy and positive. It’s fast under the fingers and great to play.

The response is really nice too. Low Bb is just another note – not harder than the rest of the range! It’s easy to play a fully saturated pianissimo on low Bb no problem. There was no past damage on this horn either. It was one-owner, and really well cared-for. To make it 65+ years with no damage means the owner was meticulous. That’s probably why he had it relacquered sometime long ago. They did a careful job, with minimal buffing and no damage to the tone holes. The engraving still looks great, and is a bit nicer even in person than in the photos. This horn includes the BAM case of your choice with the purchase – Cabine or Softpack, or you can upgrade to a more expensive one if you want to discuss that.

This is THE optimal gigging tenor for many serious players, and it really can do it all well.
