Description

Is the King Super 20 the greatest all-around tenor ever? To me, it does more things right than just about any other saxophone. This one is priced low because I cannot decide whether it is original lacquer or not. It might be your chance to get an original lacquer Super 20 with full pearls (on the keys) for the price of a relacquered one. This horn was owned by a New Orleans jazz musician who played Kings for his entire career. I have some archival photos of him in the 30’s playing a King Zephyr in some New Orleans bands. The engraving is quite sharp, and does not look buffed. Even the fine starburst engraving on the bell key cups is nice and sharp. The only reason I’m selling it as a relacquer is just something about the way the light reflects off of it. I’d rather you get something better than described if it’s original.

So features wise, this horn is a 298xxx serial and has the solid silver, double-socket neck, pearls in the palm keys, side keys, and G#, triangular pants guard, starburst bell key engraving. There is no current damage, no dents or dings. One side of the bell key guard was resoldered. That’s it for past repairs that I see.

From a player’s perspective, the first thing you notice is that this horn is alive! It has medium-old pads, but they are still sealing, and it just roars on them. Some Super 20’s are more compact and straight ahead. This one just screams, and is the loudest (in itself) horn in the shop right now (along with the Couf Superba 1).   Of course, you can also play it softly, but it’s a saturated kind of soft that says “I’ve got a lot more to offer.” The intonation is very good, and the keywork is quite comfortable. I think this horn is going to make someone really happy!

Only one available.
