This is one of those vintage Selmers that is waiting for the right player to grab it and make a career with it. It has a big warm tone, very similar to my personal Balanced Action tenor (29xxx) with lots of resonance and that hard-to-describe quality that makes certain vintage Selmers really special. On the cons side, this horn has been relacquered. It was done really well, probably at the Selmer factory in the 40’s or 50’s judging by the type of lacquer, the color, and the fact that the engraving still looks like original lacquer almost everywhere you look.

It was done really well, probably at the Selmer factory in the 40’s or 50’s judging by the type of lacquer, the color, and the fact that the engraving still looks like original lacquer almost everywhere you look. Other cons include a few resolders: low Eb key cages, and the post for the high E key, as well as the neck tenon. The neck has been pulled down in the past, but it is in good shape now. On the pro side, this is one of the really good vintage Selmers. It is a player’s horn and it is looking for a good player to make it sing again. It has gorgeous engraving including multiple flowers and a mountain scene with a cabin. This horn would be KILLER if somebody would strip the remaining lacquer and get it repadded by somebody really good, like Matt Stohrer, TenorMadness, or Ernie Sola. (If you are looking for a really good saxophone tech, let me know and I can tell you the closest really good one that I know of who lives near you.) You would want to use over-sized domed metal resonators, just by the way. I am sorely tempted to do this myself, but, alas, I have to pay the bills. It plays well as is, on older pads that have been set up quite nicely. You can get a good idea for the tone. Remember we have a 7-day return policy so that you can buy a horn on trial and only pay the shipping both ways. That’s a better trial policy than any other dealer.
