This is a very nearly mint condition Yamaha 62R soprano in the original case. It has an extremely desirable 3-digit serial# 3xx, so it is one of the very early ones with the low C# key on the top. It has no dents, very few scratches, and no past repairs. There is virtually no lacquer wear. The pads seal well and are in good condition.
This horn really sounds good too. I love the tone of vintage Yamaha purple label horns. It has a ‘vintage’ (or at least semi-vintage) warmth and complexity to it that goes away on the newer Yamahas. The body of the sax is resonant and vibrates when you play. The tone is medium between bright and dark, with a warmth and richness that makes this a nice soprano saxophone to listen to. It also has very comfortable keywork ergonomically, and the great intonation that makes Yamaha saxophones so good. The new 82ZR turned out to be nothing more than a re-issue of the 62R, which has led to even more interest among players and collectors in getting the original rather than the copy (compare the vintage guitar market). I have also heard that the tone of the original is still superior, though I haven’t gotten to compare them side by side yet.
So to sum up, this is a very clean example of what many players think is the greatest soprano saxophone model ever made. (It is definitely one of the top two modern sopranos in my estimation.) You can feel confident in buying this horn, not only to play, but also as an investment. It comes also with an original black Yamaha case cover as well.
